Dr. Hall, I am worried that your conclusions that AI will replace doctors are correct. Your observations about the algorithms and the systems prioritizing the number of the patients seen are correct. My hospital uses the Epic charting system which is supposed to be one of the better ones, and it has best practice advisories that us nurses see also that are helpful but it is also very clear that the computer is not seeing the whole picture about the patient's condition. When AI improves it could likely replace much of the PAs and NPs jobs as well, though, if it formulates recommended orders and does much of their charting. As a registered nurse I spend about 5 hours at the nurses' station charting each 12 hour shift. If I could, say, narrate my assessment into the computer while doing it and the computer templated my progress note from it, it would replace a lot of the paperwork we do. Thus the number of jobs for nurses could easily be affected as well.
