Reaper is a DAW that runs on Mac/PC/Linux - it is also highly customisable and configurable, both via its own preferences and also through scripting which allows for very deep and detailed changes.
It's becoming popular amongst media composers due to this customisable workflow.
LBXTools.com are working on a serious controller script called Smart Knobs2
We spoke to head programmer Leon Bradley, and media composers TJ Lindgren and Stephan Römer about the project.

Another great example of how and why REAPER is slowly but surely taking over the DAW market ...

i sing the praises of the smart knobs script!! it adds value to my old bcr2000 controllers, and makes the purchases of them worthwhile!! so many thanks lb0... awesome stuff!!

I have a bcr2000. It survived a flashflood that destroyed my home. I was flabbergasted when it STILL WORKED after It dried out a month . It's showing its age, ( few knobs send random msgs ). I'm trying to get it repaired to like new status. Not sure where to start but I just don't think I have the heart to get rid of it.

@@mike2884 32 encoders on a single unit is not easy to find out there, that are also not expensive to buy... i found a sysex message on a website for the BCR to skip between any of the 32 presets, which is indeed very useful, if you configure your BCR manually

There are limits to ReaperScript but it's far, far more powerful than any other DAW

I need to learn a lot more about Reaper scripting. I'd love to give it some alternate interfaces, like a clip view similar to Ableton, and a live looping setup similar to some of Beardyman's tools... but I haven't learned how yet. Just need to put in the time to do it.

The best thing about Reaper is that the user can DIY. The worst thing about Reaper is that the user pretty much has to DIY. It's great if you customize it, but not great out of the box. Instead of investing money, the user must invest time... because it's DEEP.

the thing is reaper community (insert nerd coders) had already done all the work. Its just a simple click to download their tools/plugins. e.g: LKC variator, mk slicer & stutter, xraym, sonic anomaly and more. for me its all real estate and I don't have to waste my time coding those myself.

@@reisaki18 Nice, I haven't looked into third-party scripts much. Got anything which gives Reaper a looping-clip-launcher workflow like Ableton Live? Or, um, maybe something to link or pair midi and audio tracks so I can record midi, clean it up, then "freeze" it as audio by playing the midi track while recording audio from an external hardware synth? Reaper has been good so far, but I haven't found a way to get the workflows I want yet. It seems like I spend more time working on my configuration than I spend working on music.

It seams that Smart Knobs 2 and ReaLearn2 may be converging in functionality...I would love to see some comparison - just to know if they have different use case scenarios.

I think there are different use cases for both applications. SK2 has more workflow optimizations in mind, like automatically displaying the CCs that are assigned to faders (as mentioned in the video).

Hm no, it's actually way more. To get a glimpse, best is to check the hands on passages.

Not sure why Reaper really is so different in its extensibility. I've got an open mind about it but other DAWs have scripting too so I'm not clear to what degree it's more powerful or easier than other options.

The difference between scripting in Reaper and other DAWs is mainly down to scope. In other DAWs - scripting is generally limited to creating plugin type effects, but offer very little DAW control (if any). Reaper scripting gives you almost complete control over the DAW itself, as well as being able to create the aforementioned plugin type scripts. In Reaper you can create scripts that alter the way the DAW works, scripts that can create and manipulate audio and midi items already on the timeline, generate automation offline, create/delete/adjust/show/hide/rename/duplicate tracks/envelopes/midi/audio/routing, load/adjust/remove audio and video effects, change plugin/track parameters, communicate directly with control surfaces. If you can think of it - you can pretty much do it. Why is this useful? Well - if you require a function that isn't available natively - you can code it yourself to make the DAW work how you want it to work, so you are not restricted to how the developers have designed it to work - which doesn't necessarily suit everybody. Repetitive tasks can be automated - so a simple click can save you having to perform the task manually - saving you both time and money. The entire DAW can be adjusted to suit your workflow. Not everybody requires this extensibility in a DAW, but for those that do - it really is invaluable, and can give you more time to spend living life away from the studio.

Reaper has like 3 scripting languages and the API is ay more extensive than any other DAWs since it lets you customize every single thing about Reaper.

i have a pretty extensive setup which is a hybrid of software, but with outboard electronic instruments and effects that i want to sync and also to have control over, all without having to look at the screen... at all. and with reaper i can do that. ultimately, we don't want to be dealing with all this shit, but we deal with this shit so we *don't* have to deal with this shit, down the line.
