That happened when I test drove a Ford Contour I bought in 2000. After copying my driver's license (and giving the original back to me), the salesman handed me the keys and said "We close at 5." Never let a dealer “drive the car up to you” either. Make sure you hear that cold start. Look under the oil cap for buildup. Test windshield wipers. Check headlight bulbs/hazards/reverse lights/interior lights. Also missed checking all windows/sunroofs, stereo volume for blown out speakers and opening and closing all doors/trunk for functionality. Don’t test drive with music on or ac/heat on high so you can really hear for noises. Lots of things to check on used cars.

This actually happened to me. The dealer brought it up to me on 2 separate occasions when I called to say I was coming by to look at the same vehicle. Best test drive I ever did was when the salesman just gave me the keys and let it sell itself. This gave me ample time to inspect the vehicle and get a feel for it without some dude in the front seat with me talking my ears off, this was a used vehicle. I went back a few years later and bought a brand new one from them, and I go to them for service as well. If more dealerships worked on customer retention instead of the quarterly reports and their paychecks, the car sales industry would be better for everyone.

Both my used cars were like this from totally different used car dealers. I was shocked. The first time all they had was my info and they just handed my girlfriend and I the keys and let us go. The second time was yesterday when I traded in that other car. This time the dealer had all my info and the keys to the trade in, so once again we were handed the keys and told to have fun. This dealer even suggested which direction to go for different road surfaces. In the future I don't think I'd even consider a car if I had to bring a salesperson with me.

I'm an old guy, so one of my favorite parts of the test drive is driving opposite the way they tell me to go. When they balk or suggest another route, I will tell them that I have lived in this community before they were a tear in their daddy's eye, so I think I can find my way around to test drive the car. I also enjoy, when dealing with a young salesperson, telling them that I was test driving and buying cars before they were born, so just sit back and enjoy the ride. Fun things like that.

A few hints I've used: Choose your own route, and make it one you drive regularly. Arrange to take an additional drive after dark. If the seller won't accommodate that, move on. Take a ride in the back seat. Finally, choose a day when it's pouring rain, especially if you think you might actually buy on that day. You want to see how the vehicle performs in bad conditions, and besides, dealer traffic is typically way down on a rainy day, and they need to get a sale.

Yup... When I buy used cars I have my all module scan tool with me and I'm armed with enough knowledge to know what I'm looking for, I will know if someone has cleared codes or is hiding something. I tell them I'm going to hook it up during my test drive before I go, had one dealer tell me I could not use it, went elsewhere. There are a lot of games that can be played by dealers selling used cars, if you don't know what you are looking for a pre-purchase inspection is a must for these same reasons.
@augoldminer

two friends have found cars where the dealers have removed the bulb from the check engine light. in both cases they plugged in a obd2 tester after the test drive and found codes that should have tripped the check engine light. Needless to say they never went back and warned anyone about the dealer if you don't have a code reader, check by turning the key without starting the engine and the check engine light should come, then start the car and the light should go off.

There is definitely differences in how you test drive and pre-check new and used cars. Expectations should be different too. That "new car smell" is long gone in older cars and you will find smells under the hood that may not necessarily be a problem today but a residual smell from old problems that are no longer an issue. So getting eyes closer on your engine is more important on used cars. Also look UNDER the car, that is, get on your back and slide under it as far as you can and get a visual and tactile (hand) inspection for rust. This is where a professional mechanic comes in to pre-inspect your car. Know the difference between surface rust, which can be found even on new cars (speaking of under carriage here) and hard rust where damage is obvious.
@user-tq5up8nn3q
@user-tq5up8nn3q Жыл бұрын
Good and simple way to check if rust is just surface rust or deeper, get something hard like a wrench or even your fist could work, and tap around. If most of it sounds solid then you tap a section and it sounds hollow or weird then you know to investigate deeper

Also take a flashlight after dark to look under the hood for any leaks .

The first thing I do before test driving is check the blind spots. Some cars (read Prius) are nothing but a giant blind spot. If I can’t see the cars around me, then there’s no point in driving the car. Yes there are blind spot sensors on newer cars, but if those sensors fail and you hit someone, the insurance company is not going to take the excuse that you relied on your blind spot sensors.

It had just come off the truck the day before and hadn't been run through the shop yet. I did the paperwork while they prepared the car. It still had less than a mile on the odometer as I drove away. Everything turned out okay

I was on a test drive once where the sales person tried to direct my route and wouldn't even consider changes. I had other ideas since I knew the area and wanted to try the vehicle on particular road surfaces. At one point, she got really nervous and unfastened her seatbelt like she was getting ready to bail out. I gave in and took her back to the dealership and never did business with them.

@@kamX-rz4uy Fair enough. That should go both ways though. In the future, if I'm going to be accompanied on a test drive, I'll discuss it before I ever hand over my license for them to copy (or scan or whatever they do these days). I think I made a big mistake because the prices of the parts I needed, sounded like they skyrocketed for advertising you. Lol. I actually walked out empty handed, as everything I needed is special order anyway. It’s not their fault that I have a 1976 corvette that needs lots of parts. I’ll find what I need online, Chevy was ridiculous. Stainless brake lines. Weatherstripping kit. All hoses kit.

This was more important when manual transmissions with three pedals were common than it is with automatic transmissions. I usually do two test drives... one with a version of the vehicle I don't plan t obuy (maybe the wrong color) and then the vehicle I intend to drive, to make a comparison of sorts. And being that I test drove my last car during COVID, they let me take it out for a good 20-25 minute drive alone, which was good because I was able to do both some city and highway driving (Brief highway driving, like 5 minutes but that was enough for me), plus I was able to test it on a few back roads (roads I knew were crappy, because I wanted to see the suspension, braking, and sound levels in those conditions). Of course I did this in a version of the vehicle I didn't really end up buying, but did a similar, shorter, less aggressive test drive in the vehicle I ultimately bought (which was the same vehicle, just a slightly different trim level) because I had already experienced what I wanted to in the other car, but the dealership insisted I test drive the car I did buy first before signing the paper, which is actually a good move by a dealer, most wouldn't care. But they said they wanted to be sure I wanted the car. One thing to keep in mind about engine noise, is that you need to be familiar with noises. Some noises are actually normal (like little valve train noise is actually normal on most cars).. An examlple of "normal" noises is 2020 Camry has a self-cleaning mode, which sounds like a light ringing sound for about 2-3 seconds every few days, but I verified this to be common to all Camry's of the same generation, and it is in fact a self cleaning /adjusting operation it does periodically while the vehicle is idling at a light (since those cars use both direct injection and port injection, so this is used to combat the build-of of carbon from the direct injection, a common problem on other cars as they age but Toyota found a way to have DI and address the carbon build-up issue). Obviously things like kocking, ticking, or clunking, is a bad noise and if you hear that, then don't bother buying the vehicle.

In a 1988 test drive, with salesman in the passenger seat giving directions on where to drive, I scared him. But I felt a need to see how much turbo lag was present _and_ to see how much torque steer the car had under hard acceleration, then, to see how it felt when the antilock kicked in on hard braking. Turbo lag was about average for the time and torque steer was better (less) than I expected, very controllable. Bought it.

After some twists and turns and semi-paved roads, it was highway time. As soon as we got over 50, the whole ass end started shaking. Got back to the dealership, got in my car and left. Salesman tried saying it was because the weather is so cold and the tires were sitting for so long. This is Mississippi where it's still 65-70 degrees in early November.
