HEy, it's so simple to have a real working solution: 1. Virtual Desktop: You can setup a color that is used for "Green Screening". F.E. define a rare Color as Alpha Color . 2. in AAO: Create an In-Game Panel (WEB FIP) with that color. place it somehere in the plane below the Windows where your real Hardware is . Using Virtual Deskopt: Now you see the passthrough inside the cockpit allways at the same place inside the VR game.

That’s great! I’ll look into that more. I think I actually tried it and it was weird but cool, but I turned it off because I didn’t have time to mess with it. But I spent all of 5 minutes with that on. It was cool seeing both.

@Oliver-38911 10 ай бұрын
@@theVRpilot yeah, turning it just "on" with standard color let all the color occurancies in the sim be transparent. i think you need to define a rare color (and almost no range) . and then place a solid color bar (as a web-fip) into the sim.

Muscle memory for sure. Ive played a couple of thousand hours of Elite: Dangerous with hotas and pedals. I used a couple of Ikea svartasen laptop stands, one with just the throttle, instead of the tabletop, and the other with the top, the stick velcroed on, space for mousing and a 3d printed clamp on stand for one of my vive controllers so it was always within reach. Between the two stands i had a board which attached with more velcro, onto which a slim keyboard was attached using 3d printed clips. I got one of those floor protectors (probably an Ikea Kolon, saw it, offered and got it for a buck when i was picking some chairs from after an auction, they were clearing out an office), basically a large plastic mat, and i put velcro on it too to hold the pedals as well as locking the positions of the laptop stands so the stuff wouldnt move about and be easy to set back up when i had to move the setup to the side. I made some wheel blocker things and attached that to the floor protection, that way the office chair would also go back in the same place every time and not roll when i pushed against the pedals. Eventually i switched from a regular office chair to the passenger seat ripped out of a friends Golf before he sent it to the scrapyard, put bass shakers in it and powered them by making an adapter to run them instead of my subwoofer (I mostly VR with headphones), was really happy with the setup.

For rolling char... In your pit where you place your chair, put like 2 long screws into the base on both sides of each wheel, depending on how your wheels are it might take 4 screws each wheel on all 4 sides of each wheel. When you play just drop your chair with the wheels being placed in the center of the screws you put in... now the chair will NOT roll around and when you want to use it elsewhere, just simply pick it up and replace it on the floor and it rolls again. And it takes care of the next thing too... consistency in the placement of the chair to be the same everytime... the "locking screws" that keep it from rolling... they will NEVER move so when you lock the chair from rolling around... it wont roll around IN THE SAME POSITION/LOCATION every single time.

This was really good and timely for me. I’m relatively new to all this. I did buy the X-Touch Mini for added and VR-viewable solution. I have my HOTAS mounted on my rolling office chair using monitor arms and Velcro. Two words - gaffers tape ! It works. Also holds the rudder pedals in place. I’m going to try a kneeboard with a trackball mouse Velcro’ed and see how that goes. In DCS, there’s a setting for placing the mouse cursor where you are looking in VR, so that should help. I've chopped out the underside of most of my VR headset's facial interfaces (like the Quest Pro comes stock) so I can look under the VR at my SimPit and see my switches and buttons. It's a poor man's passthrough and very similar to how NVGs are used in RL. With Falcon BMS I can use it to see my second monitor's MFD displays behind my TM MFDs for a little more clarity for TGP work. The light bleed/stability loss isn't bad for flight sims.

Thanks for the video and information. I have been doing this kind of method with my SIM racing games for quite a while. I know where everything is around me while being in my VR. headset Most the time it isasy because of just using the steering wheel and pedals. I don't do Flight SIM games even though I do have the Microsoft Flight Simulator installed on my gaming computer. I know very little about doing airplane control operations even though I was a "crew chief" on a real C-130 4 engine turbo prop aircraft in the Air Force during the Viet Nam years. Got to fly in the plane where ever the went and helped maintain and pre flight the aircraft before the crew came out to fly. Maybe someday I will start learning how to use MSFS game and flying different planes. Be neat if I could find a C-130 aircraft that works in the game and learn to fly it. I did sit in the co-pilots seat with a pilot when he was doing some testing after repairs. Again, thanks for the video. take care.

InfuseVR by YawVR should be coming out pretty soon which will let you let you bring fully functional 3D models of your peripherals into your vr cockpit, place them wherever you want, and scale them to whatever size you want. I think it's supposed to be compatible with any vr game.... but def don't quote me on that cause I could be wrong. I think it will only work for Quest 2, 3, and Pro, Pico, and possibly Pimax Crystal at launch.... at least to see your hands.... hmm that would be a good question for me to ask them. I don't see why you wouldn't be able to bring a peripheral into a game while using a G2 or something and just not be able to see your hands... it could still help out I would think. Anyway, I don't think every peripheral will be available at launch but they said the list will keep growing.

I tried to use vr on vatsim and manage a complicated flight deck a few years back. What a waste. I now use 3x32" lg nano monitors in 1440p and 2x21" asus touchscreens with Air Manager/knobster. Great immersion without vr controller hastles etc. 3 x monitors covers everything you can see out the windscreen anyways. VR is still very cool for helos and heavy VMC. Shooting up tanks on DCS, etc. The other option is to purchase a vr cockpit for 50-100k like the air force Texan trainer in video. There is also a 172 vr cockpit, but honestly, what happens when you outgrow aircraft or want a type rating in various aircraft? VR is not the answer for real world training unless you can afford vr immersion cockpit and vr pass-thru. No offense.

Loved this video! Interestingly enough, because I've been so into VR and DCS in particular with its clickable cockpits, one feature of *that* game is to assign right and left mouse buttons to some other buttons, on some other device. I gave up one of the hat switches on my HOTAS for that functionality. Now, I just look with my headset crosshairs at the cockpit controls I want to manipulate, and use that hat. It works in every aircraft, I don't have to switch HOTAS controls for different planes, and my controls are consistent for everything. It's not entirely true-to-life to have your landing gear switch be an F-16 hat control, but it sure is handy! Speaking of the F-16 controller, I noticed in your video that you're using the old Thrustmaster Cougar throttle. What did you have to do to get it working independently of the original joystick? Mine required a hacksaw and hot glue to change a few things. ;)
@theVRpilot
@theVRpilot 10 ай бұрын
Thanks for sharing that tip! Correct I am using the older Cougar Throttle. So what you don't see is that the original joystick is behind the monitor! LOL. I simply never used it. So I had Honeycomb Yoke, A10 Joystick to the right, and that Cougar Joystick behind the monitor just hanging out lol. But I enjoyed having both A-10 and F-16 throttle available, and then unfortunately my A-10 Throttle died over night. I think it can still be fixed as Thrustmaster quoted me $75 for the parts. I'll give that a shot soon.

There's a guy on the DCS forums (input devices -> thrustmaster), rel4y who built a USB mod for the TM Cougar Throttle that uses a cheap microcontroller to act as a proper USB interface so you can use the throttle as a standalone USB device (he also makes hall effect sensor mods for the main throttle axis, which require the USB mod to function). Unfortunately I recently managed to damage the USB port on my modded cougar throttle and I am waiting to hear back from rel4y about getting a replacement but he's been a bit quiet.

Great Question! I had also never used one before. This might come down to personal preference but I will give you my feedback as I have owned both. I really enjoyed it, I think I dropped it and broke it (BEFORE VELCRO haha) and then purchased one that had higher reviews and I thought I would like it more... amzn.to/40ohBFy with the ball in the middle. Annnnd while I still have it to this day, I REALLY dont like it lol. But it isnt critical. I prefer the thumb control mouse and the way the scroll wheel was as it was traditional. The ball in the middle setup has a scroll wheel that surrounds the ball, its meh. I think this really might be a personal preference thing. Try to check a local store, or order both and return one. Or try one lol. Idk. I should just buy the Elecom model as my hand felt more natural using it. Another thing to consider is this. I had it quite LOW, to my right, by my waist. The model with the track ball in the middle did work better as I remember my hand felt funky trying to grip the unit properly. But if it is going to be set above your waist, I think the unit with the ball on the left, and standard scroll wheel and extra buttons is ideal! I hope that was as clear as mud and it helps! lol lmk what you decide and how it goes for you. I am curious. Either way, this will be better than a standard mouse! - Jose

@theVRpilot thanks for the insight. I didn't realize the middle ball didn't have traditional scrolling. That alone makes me lean towards the thumb control. Edit: just checked and this is one of the ones I saved in my amazon cart.

Is it possible to hold a switch in VR (using mouse) while looking away? In Flight Sim, on the Saab, the start switch is spring loaded so I have to keep holding it while looking at the instruments during startup. The problem is that as soon as I look away, I loose the start switch as my mouse cursor automatically goes back into my field of view. How to keep holding the switch while looking at other things?
@theVRpilot
@theVRpilot 2 ай бұрын
Hmm, yeah I think it works but also your right I think as you look away it might disconnect. I can’t remember now and have to try it lol. One option would be is to maybe set that specific switch to an actual binding on a button if you can.

VR for gamers is fine. Helos, DCS, vmc, etc. If you want to be rw pilot, then the purpose of a flight sim is procedure, flow, comms, ifr charts, and the exact location of knobs, switches etc. Is there a computer keyboard in a 172 or da42? Make sure you understand your goals in your flight sim first, before buying expensive immersion hardware. Developing muscle memory to a keyboard makes no sense for rw pilot wannabe's.

I would add : keep flying the same 2 or 3 crafts. It takes time to master an aircraft like a pro. Set some failiures (easy on Xplane) and fly IFR . You will be so familiar with your controlers and button box you wont have to look for them.

I bought a Meta-Oculus Rift S one year before they dropped their support of this product. The Rift S worked well until I updated my computer. Now two years later and after a year of Meta stupid suggestions for getting my Rift S working again, it's still not working. I have a $400 paper weight that Meta refuses to fix even though they say my new computer should not be a problem. I cannot recommend buying any Meta products due to their lack of customer service and having a chance of the same dropping of older products support. Meta basically has no customer service and only lip service!

Dang! Sorry Terry, the really issue is the headsets only get more expense lol than 300-500. One thing to note is that VR tech is evolving quick, which is good and bad, granted some folks change phones every year but headsets often have a shelf life of sub 4 years maybe 3. Now some can work after the companies stop supporting the product but in general you will find that HP dropped the G2, Microsoft dropped WMR, Varjo Dropped the Aero. Yes, some of the older Meta headsets don't work, but the Quest 2 and 3 still work, and Pimax older headset still work additionally if you leave the 600-900 range you end up in the 1000+ - 2500+ range and you might have a similar shelf life. Again, this tech is evolving and this might be a good video to t talk about so folks kind of have a heads up and maybe be aware of. Where are you at today? have you seen the new MSFS 2024? I posted some new videos on it. Join my discord community and we can chat there with other folks that might have some good suggestions. discord.gg/WKfJqJBwYb

I kind of feel you've over complicated this. All you need is a small nose gap in your headset, in a dim room there's no light bleed, and you can see all you need too.
@theVRpilot
@theVRpilot 10 ай бұрын
Thanks for the feedback! It's possible I might have, lol. Your solution of a nose gap is great and works for many. I didn't mention it because I do not like seeing the outside world while I am in VR and I suspect others are in the same boat. This video came idea/response comes from my MSFS VR Facebook group of 8,700..... I can not begin to say how many times folks (likely new to VR Flight Sim ) have asked, I don't know how to see my mouse, or "I am struggling finding my keyboard in VR", "cant use my yoke while flying because I cant see it". ...and I reply each time, "Well guys its all about muscle memory, like playing a musical instrument, riding a bike, or entering your pin. etc etc etc etc " This video was a slightly longer (I tried to make it short lol) explanation also covering a few other things and some tips to really help those entering the world of VR flight simulation or racing. The end goal would be they no longer need tape or having to mark anything but they simply now can trust their muscle memory, maybe with a bit of combined nose gap as you mentioned! Complication is the death of new VR simmers and simplicity is the key for enjoyment and growing our hobby, so you are correct that I might have expanded a bit lol. Again, thanks for your feedback and tip!

so htf do I do this with a "RealSimGear" full dual-Garmin1000 set up?! 🧐😳
@theVRpilot
@theVRpilot 6 ай бұрын
Same concept, the more complex your gear it works better I think. Your muscle memory is key to this. If you have something like that I would hope you have a dedicated sim pit. The dedicated sim pit allows your chair and G1000 setup to be in the same place at all times, so your muscle memory in VR will be greatly improved. I have two videos coming out with in the next few weeks, one will be a tour of my SimPit and I will discuss how I’m able to have an improved VR experienced because of it due to increased muscle memory performance, amongst showing all the hardware on it. I will then have a video tutorial on how to build the exact same Simpit from scratch for under $200. I’m finishing the PDF instructions now and editing the video. But again, you want to have your chair, and hardware be in the same place allowing for your muscle memory to be accurate as you reach out in VR time and time again. Cheers Jose

@@theVRpilotthanks - I'm new to it all but just learning as much as I can. Love the idea of VR for the immersion, but also want as much "hardware" to make the sim as real as possible. Does the VR get programmed where objects are? Or do you just need to place them in the simpit as close to reality as possible, then "feel" your way to them until muscle memory takes over? And I presume what you are clicking on the hardware is updating in the software/VR? (I've never used VR before hehe) but then again, if using really realistic hardware like those G1000 screens, there's no point having the VR! tricky.

What is the throttle you're using just behind the Warthog throttle? I've had the Warthog joystick and MFG Crosswind ruddar pedals for years but never got around to getting a good throttle since becoming sidetracked with my sim racing hobby. Would love to find one thats good value for money and get back into flight sims.
@theVRpilot
@theVRpilot 10 ай бұрын
Hey! So believe it or not that is a Thrust-master Cougar Hotas, so it’s an OG F-16 metal throttle, it actually has to connect to the joystick (that’s behind the monitor out of sight) via serial cable, and the joystick connects via USB to the PC. I would suggest take a look at WinWings new products and Thrustmaster. Also consider your favorite fighter jet and maybe get a HOTAS that closer resembles that. You can obviously fly everything, but if you plane to rock the F16 the most, grab something that matches (if it fits your budget). I’d love to get my hands on the newer Thrustmaster Throttle and Winwing and do reviews on them.

All of this is a nonsense, past century solutions, in my humble opinion. Only a 100% clickable and controlled virtual cockpit, with virtual hotas and hand controllers (VTOL VR for example) will give you full VR immersion, without scotching panels and moving chairs around the room.
