At 82 I am on my 3rd Cocker Spaniel. My first at 9 yrs old, my second 20 years ago, who became my service dog for 17 yrs and I had to put him down 10 days before his 18th birthday. He was a seizure alert dog. After weeks of tears, I purchased another Cocker Spaniel at 8 weeks of age. He is now 11 months and a great friend. He is a Wonderful beautiful dog. like my other Cockers, he is very smart and learns quickly. He is equally happy playing ball or watching TV. He has his favorite commercials and comes racing into the room to watch them. It is hysterical. I pray God gives me many years with him.

I would say all of these things to the person/people who abandoned the sweet Cocker that I ended up rescuing. I won't go into all the details, but he had been abandoned and abused. He was already in the middle of his life so we only had seven years before cancer took him away, but he was so precious to me! He was beautiful, sweet and had great emotional intelligence. He passed AKC therapy dog classes near the end of his life. He was my first dog and a very memorable one. We weathered the scars of abuse on his psyche and he became confident and outgoing. We achieved house training in the middle of his life. Don't ever let someone tell you that an old dog can't learn! It does take some patience and understanding, including of health conditions. My second dog was also a Cocker--an unwanted one due to skin health problems. She was lovely. Both of these dear (purebred) dogs will be a part of me as long as I have memory. Just saying that to people who think rescues are mutts, no offense to mixed-breeds. I would just say to people, please don't overlook an older dog when adopting! They might enhance your own life in ways you can't imagine, or aren't prepared to think of. As an old animal rescuer, I can attest that they give more than you do.

I had a cocker spaniel, a black one called "Vintén". They gave it to me when I turned 10 years old and we shared 12 years together until he passed away. Now I am 37 and I would love to have another one. I loved that dog and learned so much from him. Such a great pet. Funny, energetic, sweet. He loved playing and swimming.

You are spot on about Cocker Spaniels! I found an American Cocker at a local rescue place. She was five years old had been for three years with a family with nine children! She then was in a home that took her away from the first family. She was extremely overweight and had no training except to potty outdoors. She was totally a wild child…I named her Liberty and almost gave her back. She would piddle if anyone even looked at her and she had no manners what so ever and had never been socialized. The very first thing she learned was that I was alpha and she was not to go out the door until I went first. She actually learned sit, stay , down and not to eat until I said OK. She is close to eleven and is a happy-go-lucky puppy. You are so right about her appetite, she would eat anything that she thinks is human food. I believe she learned so quickly because she is so kind hearted and very, very smart. She is now leash trained and heels very well. Wish I had had her in her puppyhood.

Like some before us, we just lost our best friend after 11 years. We got Buddy from the Frederick animal shelter when he was about 4. That put him at 15 at the end. Absolutely the best dog we have had over many years. A major issue of which we were not prepared was the continual problem with his ears. Surgical procedures were required as well as infection after infection. If you cannot afford a large medical account, yo probably should pass.

I rescued a 5 year old cocker spaniel who was locked up, neglected and abused. He naturally bit everyone. He walked into my home and never left and he is the sweetest dog. All he needed was to feel safe and deeply loved. My challenge is his territorial behavior, so I minimise that by creating a space that is just for him and other dogs can't enter, and i feed them separately, except for treats.

We are considering one, but must have a low shedder (husband has allergies). I’ve been researching online but find comments from people who’ve owned 7 and not one of them ever shed, to a woman complaining hers shed so much the house and their clothing are constantly covered. Do yours shed? I don’t know what to believe, and my daughter and I are so in love with these beautiful pups.
@evelynallen6966 Жыл бұрын
We have never had a problem with shedding with our cocker spaniels over the years, however their coat does need attention. A daily brush is a good start, but coats do vary. I like to take my dog to the groomer every 6 weeks. If you are concerned, I suggest that you ask the breeder to show you the parent dogs ( I would only buy from a reputable breeder). We have always had the English Cocker Spaniel, I can't comment on the American Cocker Spaniel. Who could resist those adorable puppies, but in fairness to the dog, make sure they are right for you.

As for #7, we have 5 American cocker spaniels. Three of them are 7 yrs old and 2 are pups (9&10 months now). With proper training, they had a very smooth transition making a pack! We groom our own. So, any clips can be done at any time. Obviously, yes to the vet visits. They are my heart. I just had to put down my "sidekick", Lilly, a chocolate cocker, at 12 yrs of age, 9 months ago. I'm still grieving but the new pups have my heart as well. I cannot live withOUT a cocker spaniel.

7 reasons why you should let a cocker spaniel into your heart, Playful, always full of boundless energy and love a challenge.incredibly loyal, super intelligent a all round brilliant friend and companion, will make you laugh will make you cry with laughter. will protect you from the postman and those nightmare bills, and they always want to share your bed. the only 1 drawback which should be considered before letting them into your life is the heartbreak and grief when it is time for them to return to the heavens.i have had my heart broken 4 times in my life. Olliver, 16 Jake 15 Chester 8 and my dear Charlie 14. one day i will make room for another in my heart until then my Harvey and Oscar my 2 wonderful spaniels will have to make do with me.

An alternative is to get a Springer Spaniel. They are highly intelligent, protective of women and children, and a great family dog. They do shed like a snowstorm, and need an active lifestyle. They are not an apartment dog. They love to swim and retrieve balls and frisbees. I've had 4 since the mid 70's and my last male lived to 16 years and 9 months. With the new dog foods coming out like Farmers and Sundays, dogs should live even longer lives. I fed my last one Blue Buffalo. Springers come in liver & white, and black & white, both with freckles of the darker color. Most have a white blaze on their foreheads, which is a sought-after trait.

@marciamcgrail58897 ай бұрын
I do wish that in the grooming section more emphasis would be placed on the consequences of cockers (and similarly bred dogs) having thick heavy hairy ear flaps. Sweat, dirt and wax build up underneath that the dog simply cannot self clean away, despite much ear scratching (often with overgrown sharp claws) and head shaking, leading to painful ear infections. If allowed by ignorance and/or neglect to become chronic, the dog risks deafness from the inflamed ear canals blocking the clear path for sound to reach the ear drum. Poor dogs.
