As someone from the UK, smarties have the same concept of m&ms, chocolate covered by a candy shell, but the shell of smarties is slightly fruit flavoured, making them taste very different from m&ms

First off, Forrest Mars Sr. was inspired to create M&M's after seeing British soldiers eating Smarties during the Spanish Civil War in the 1930s. Smarties were technically created in 1882 in which their name was chocolate beans, then Smarties Chocolate Beans in 1937. They are also in Canada as well, not just Europe.

Smarties came first and taste a little different. They also had better marketting with tube packets and a fun fact on the cap (now hexagonal tubes), which is why they remained more popular than M&Ms for years. Like Maltesers, they never got popular in the US for a long time so M&M cornered the market there and the name "Smarties" was taken by another company.

The block pushing puzzle games are often referred to as Sokoban. Just like many people refer to games as "something-likes" (souls-like, rogue-like, etc), technically Sokoban is the same distinction, as the name of this puzzle type game is derived from a game called Sokoban.

Smarties (in the US) are kinda chalky candies that are vaguely fruity flavored (in other countries they're chocolate covered in a flavorless candy shell), M&Ms are chocolate covered in a candy shell, Skittles are fruit flavored chewy candies.

I was in New Zealand a month ago and saw Smarties in Woolworths. I looked at them and was so confused. They also suck they are crappy m&ms. Our U.S. Smarties are superior. L&P soda is the elixir of the gods though.
