Hidden in the dunes of the Sandhills in Nebraska is an unexpected sight: thousands of waterfowl scattered across the meadows and sloughs. In this episode of Duck Lore, it’s mid-October, and Sean is joined by MeatEater’s own Janis Putelis. They are knocking on doors for private access, and hunting marshes full of smartweed for mallards, gadwall, wigeon, and even pintails.

The best part of this series is Sean's calling. Every single hunter in the world can make the calls he's making. It's so great to see someone being conservative and simple in their calling and having success.

Taking ethical/realist shots is refreshing to see. I see a lot of duck hunting videos nowadays where people have tight pattern chokes and taking 40-50 yard shots. This video highlights how a true waterfowler uses his spread and calling to get the birds right up front and close to not only take more ethical shots but also recovering the birds and cripples easily.

I agree, although I like using a tight choke regardless of how far I'm expecting the birds to be. More than likely I completely miss or It's a clean kill.

Really enjoy your show. Great footage of ethical hunting. As role models for lots of hunters, Please show that you’re picking up your empty shells. There is already too much plastic pollution in the environment. Plastic isn’t biodegradable and remains in the earth, marshes, rivers and oceans forever.

I haven't seen them do it in any of their series but I have heard it mentioned at the end of a hunt " let's pick up shells and go pluck some birds"

I don't understand all the hunters who leave shells, even if it's just to avoid advertising your success to other hunters, pick up your shells.

As a hunter I would gladly take a birdwatcher into the blind if they could stand the sight of some dead ducks. You get some pretty neat encounters, like a few weeks ago the Marsh Wren singing in the brush of my stick blind just a foot away.

I enjoy this series but I would really like to see the way they eat them because most of the waterfowlers I talk to here in Idaho don’t enjoy eating them. One guy only does jerky. It’s kept me away from the sport. I’m sure there are good ways to prepare them and I don’t mind eating gamey stuff but I don’t like hunting for me!

Lead modified/steel full. I typically shoot 3” shells in 2 shot for ducks, and BB/BBB for geese. If it’s early season, I may dip down to size 4 shot for ducks, if I know it’ll be heavy on teal or shoveler.

As someone who has hunted central Saskatchewan for 40 yrs as well as the upper midwest I cannot believe there is not a dog in your videos. You have to be have lost birds which to me is just the worst thing you can do. All the talk about conservation is meaningless when dead or wounded birds are left behind for the fox etc..
