As much as I hate to dictate how someone should play a character, I do believe that Jakal would do well to switch a little bit more. Squirtle is likely one of the best options against inkling, and potentially one of the better Pokemon options in general, but it's too easy to play against just Squirtle. One of Pokemon trainers coolest features is their versatility. You force your opponent to be prepared to play against multiple varied play styles. The reason wishes was able to hold his stocks until mid 100s was because Squirtle's glaring weakness is reliable kill potential. Admittedly, it's early; if Jakal has a solid grip on Squirtle's play styles, which he must have to have gotten to finally, then it's reasonable for him to stick with what he knows, but for the future, I think his next step of improvement is making use of the other Pokemon

It's just about building a narrative. From what I understand, Wishes was on a perfect 5-0 run in the winner's bracket while Jakal was coming up from the loser's bracket. And Wishes had just won game 1 convincingly. They're not being biased, they're just telling us that Jakal is the underdog and trying to add excitement to the match that way.

If hes not using Zard against inkling there might be reason, maybe its a bad matchup, or maybe hes not confident yet because his character is far more complex than the rest of the cast. You're not wrong, he can improve. But this is likely a case of "i didn't have enough time to prepare myself for 225 different matchups" rather than "I refuse to adapt"

Pokemon Trainer being "3 characters in one" is entirely dependent on matchups. If Charizard isn't great vs Inkling not using Charizard isn't gimping yourself, it's playing effectively. Jackal DID use the occasional Ivysaur to great effect, but just because he *can* switch doesn't mean it's always a good idea. It's not like you're going to land cross-pokemon combos. All switching does is change the dynamic of the matchup--it doesn't necessarily always provide a benefit. Squirtle is a whole character on his own--just doesn't have a down-b

What potential? Everyone knows speed trumps all in smash. Squirt is really fast, has a small hitbox, and has decent kill moves. Char would be combo food for inkling. Venasaur showed some usefulness but squirt obviously put in a lot of work and it paid off.

Ghost-Cell Charizard flare blitz is now hard as hell to react to, great tools for spacing, flamethtower as a pretty good edgegaurding tools, great dash speed, ect. Ivysaur can zone the opponent out very effectively, his up air is way better for juggling then Squirtle and Zard and has disjoints. Its fine playing only one of the 3, doesn't mean its optimal. By doing this he's definitely hurting his own potential. Doing this again is fine, but you can't argue he isn't using the characters full potential.

I was surprised to never see squirtle go for the Up B scoop, it’s definitely risky, but there were a few moments that he could’ve finished him off earlier and really helped keep the pressure on inkling! Definitely a great player I’m not saying I’d have done better but as a Pokémon Trainer main myself I felt like he was hindering himself by never attempting to use Charizard, and rarely ivysaur. I know this wouldn’t work on a competitive level but I like to switch from squirtle to ivysaur midair as a dodge, then use ivysaur s range and great down a to punish, especially against players who too frequently try to down A

As someone looking to main Pokémon trainer- Jakarta isn’t doing 2 crucial thins. He’s not switching enough, and he’s not using enough aerials. His ivysaur was solid, and it he’d gotten ivy onto one of the little platforms he could’ve gotten an easy up air to kill eArlY. It is very hard to keep track of inkling, and to think in high pressure situations. Just something I noticed

Sorry Forgiveme it’s more about when the pokemon you’re using isn’t useful in some places when you have to switch, if I’m in advantage but I can’t hit the opponent because I’m Squirtle and the enemy is a swordfighter then I switch to Ivysaur, same situation if my opponent is above me because of Ivysaur’s tools, and when the opponent is trying to edgeguard me I should switch to Charizard to abuse of super armor moves and try to get a kill and then switch to Squirtle next stock to do early percent combos. The principal objective of Pokemon Trainer is understanding how well each pokemon works in specific situations and by that, enjoying every pokemon and having be solid (or literally be good/excellent) with every pokemon, without that, pokemon trainer is not super great as he can really be

Ludus Music eh, all pokemon are like at 90%, they could totally be a full on character by themselves (look at Charizard in smash 4), but they work better as a team, because you constantly make your opponent differ its options if you change at the right moment, Pokemon Trainer could do 300% of his character, because, while every character is 90%, knowing how to play each one, when to change in situations to make the opponent have a harder time than they would in every situation, makes 30 crucial percents of the character

Fredrik Opoku granted he can, but I’m saying competitively if he wants to maximize his character it’ll be very difficult to do it with one. Not only are using a character with limited options in some regards but after each stock you got the complication of having to cycle back to the character you like.

@Fredrik Opoku Pokemon Trainer is designed with all three Pokemon in mind. Each has strengths and weaknesses to compensate for each other. Sure, you "can" only use one of them, but it's going to hurt your results. If you're playing casually, then sure, do whatever you want. But in competition, you need to be using every tool at your character's disposal. Using only one Pokemon is ignoring two thirds of those tools. Without the other Pokemon, you have no way of covering your weaknesses. Jakal has the right to play however he wants, but he's going to be criticized. In this match, he could have put up a better fight against Wishes if he was using all three Pokemon well. Squirtle's good and all, but Wishes was living a lot longer than he should have been because Squirtle lacks kill power. Because that's what the other Pokemon are there for.

I mean using all three isn't always a good idea. It depends on the match up. For instance Charizard gets bodied by Inkling so it isn't a good idea to have him out for very long in that particular match up. The best play would be to mainly use Squirtle to combat Inkling's speed and rack up damage, and switch to Ivysaur when you need to kill or wall them out. Then when that's done you need to get back to Squirtle asap. This character definitely ain't easy. I'm excited to see some high level Pokemon Trainer gameplay in the future. Theoretically they should have no bad match ups.

2 whole weeks is a LOT of practice time. By just focussing on playing to perfect combos, frame data and movement you can get ridiculously good even if not playing online.

TheDeatonShow ZeRo still clapped him a lot of times with different characters while Wishes has been grinding with Inklings (and only them) for like 2 weeks before launch, with the character that is the most hard to fight against for now, I don’t think he is that skilled (for now), if all goes as I think he should be just another competitive player in 2 or so months unless he really is good with playing with the inklings

Sakurai designed for Pokemon Trainer to utilize all 3 pokemon for the max potential. Squirlte for rush down combos, but lacks kill potential and edge guard. Ivysaur for campy, zoning play, but lacks a good recovery. Charizard, whom is comfirmed to be the fastest out of the three, for recovery, kill game, and edge guard. Zards weight allows him to survive far longer than any other pokemon, but he sorta combo food and struggles a little when landing. Thats why you must switch between the three.

No character struggles against heavies except worse heavies, especially not fast, manoeuvrable projectile characters like Inkling. Heavies have always been terrible in Smash, with the exception of Smash 4 Bowser (he wasn't that slow and had several scary up throw combos) and HOPEFULLY King K Rool. I hate what they did to Ridley, he's a glorified Charizard clone that is worse in every way and can't switch. He should be way faster in the air with one of the best recoveries in the game to reflect how he plays in the games, but instead they made him a generic heavy. So disappointing.
