This is from Melancholy and the Infinite Sadness album which is a double album with like 28 or 30 songs. Released in 1996 it was one of my favorite albums of all time. The range of this band is top of the line. Zero, XYU, Porcelina of the Vast Oceans, Stumblina, We Only Come Out at Night, Tonight Tonight, Jelly Belly, Bodies, Tales of a Scorched Earth and pretty much the whole album is the top in artistry.

Smashing Pumpkins started out as a band that wanted to do their own take on classic rock, some soft parts, some loud parts, a lot of heart and a lot of honesty. You could call them alt rock. Billy Corgan's songwriting and sensibility has driven the band from the beginning. Like most of the great musicians, they grew and experimented. Orchestration, electronica, pop rock, anthemic and politcal statements. Their 90's stuff is their best stuff, in my opinion. Siamese Dream (album) is a masterpiece. Some of their songs on my permanent playlist - Soma, Rain Drops and Sun Showers, Today, Bodies, Cherub Rock, Mayonnaise, Bleeding the Orchid, Everlasting Gaze. it's a sizable body of work from a very intelligent and creative brain- watching interviews with Billy Corgan , about anything, especially non music subjects, always makes me feel dumb.

Zero, Cherub Rock and 1979 are must listens. Smashing Pumpkins are not Grunge but occasionally got labeled as grunge due to their heavier songs and super popularity during the grunge era. They could do it all during the 90s. Pop, alt rock, alt metal, progressive, electronic rock and more. Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness is one of the most diverse albums ever made. It is a double album masterpiece. It has one or two average songs but the rest of the album is near perfection. Their song we only come out at night was recently used in an Apple TV commercial.

In the mid 90s,when this song was released, I was in the Navy. Everyone in the Navy has a “rate”. The job that they signed up for the Navy to do. Whether it’s an electrician or a deckhand or mechanic or whatever. But no matter what job you signed up for, everyone has to serve time in the Galley or kitchen. Cleaning dishes, busting tables etc. You were known as an FSA, food service attendant. So, During my time in the galley. I came up with, “Despite what my rate I’m still just an FSA”.

The Pumpkins have typically been about both extremes and degrees in between. Some songs are intense walls of fuzz, some are quiet ballads or poppy singles. Some are walls of fuzz with lo-key melodic vocals lol, degrees of light and shade. In between the two are their epics, which are my favorite tracks of theirs; Drown, Starla, Porcelina Of The Vast Oceans, Thru The Eyes Of Ruby, etc. This song was '95, probably why you've heard the "rat in a cage" line. You probably could've had this song as a teenager?

This song was a big hit in Europe during 1996 summer (as it was usual, US albums were out later in Old World). Like "1979" and "Tonight tonight". Smashing Pumpkins aggressive? Yes, because they were one of few grunge acts born outside Washington state (the other one were Stone Temple Pilots).

Think of this song from the view point of a singer that has to perform in front of a crowd every evening. And the fact, they expect him to perform flawlessly in front of them every evening. "Now I'm naked, nothing but an animal But can you fake it, for just one more show?" and "Despite all my rage I am still just a rat in a cage". This is basically Billy telling his fans off.

Vin, as far as Smashing Pumpkins goes you will absolutely love "Drown", "Tristessa", "I Am One", "Thru the Eyes of Ruby" for harder songs and Sori, for more beautiful rock go with "Mayonaise", "Soma", "Stand Inside Your Love", and for alternative 80's sounding, go with "To Shiela", "For Martha", or "Glynis". Sori must be having a bad day. This song was massive in the 90s. The music video helped a lot. His voice is an acquired taste but this song is fire. I saw Smashing Pumpkins at a Festival a few years ago and this song went off. Try not to mosh to this. It's Impossible! Rat in a cage means you are trapped by society. You hate your job, but you can't quit it, because you have debts to pay. Billy Corgan hated playing the same stuff all the time but it is what the fans want. They only want to hear the old stuff and not the new stuff. The life of a rock star can be tough at times. Having to do the same stuff over and over again. They did get payed well back then so it is not all bad.
