Corgan's ability playing guitar is grossly underrated.
@Syclone00444 жыл бұрын
Yeah he really fucking loves it, he’s got a huuuge collection of gear and a big old pile of effects pedals, including everything way back from their biggest albums. I forget where I saw it on KZbin but it was like a tour of some warehouse or whatever where he has all this shit stored, and how the Mayonaise guitar was some cheap fucked up guitar that would squeal when you paused, and eventually that organically kind of just became part of the song they kept in on purpose, and now its iconic. “Words define the plan.... And when I can... (SQUEALL), I will... (SQUEALL) Cool enough to always be it, dumb enough to always feel it” etc. (I know I butchered those lyrics 😆🙈 forgive me, you know what I mean tho.) There’s also a video by Eddie Van Halen discussing/promoting either his new (at the time like 10 yrs ago) “Wolfgang Guitar” (which is all he plays live ever since, I believe), or his EVH 5150 vacuum tube amp, and how/why they made it the way they did. (If I had to guess I’d say the amp video). And EVH says something like “Billy Corgan, from Smashing Pumpkins was here, and he’s like: ‘Where are the effects pedals?’ And I’m like: ‘I don’t need effects pedals. Just plugged straight into the amp like I’ve always done.’” And I’m not 100% sure but I think EVH is known for always doing it that way, and that’s how he achieved his famous “Brown sound” guitar tone.

@Syclone00444 жыл бұрын
Dr Toboggan Yeah I actually wrote a huge comment on this exact topic (Billy acknowledging today’s fans mostly only know him as ‘The Rat In a Cage Guy’) elsewhere but I’ll repost part of it here: The cool thing is if you watch Billy Corgan’s Joe Rogan interview (like 2-3h long and totally worth it - one of the all time best interviews of anyone about anything I’ve ever listened to), Billy discusses all of this at great lengths, and it’s really insightful and shows how much he has grown and matured and recognized the errors of his old ways. (I cut out the part here about Billy learning in retrospect he should have worked much harder to ensure his BAND all got credit fairly, and not just him.) Another good one, is Billy addressing to Joe Rogan how he recognizes that most ppl nowadays and even fans at concerts “really only know me as ‘The Rat In a Cage Guy’.” which is both sobering and impressively candid, honest, and humble of Billy to acknowledge. So it’s ironic to me they played that song here and not surprising they all seemed pretty half-hearted about it - Billy especially. He also talked about how he struggled to come to terms with this now that he’s 50 and not in the same place anymore as he was as an angsty early 20-something, and to keep his principles, he wasn’t willing to perform those songs at all if he felt it was gonna be half assed and just being essentially a coin-operated human jukebox... His solution involved a shift in mindset. I wrote half the shit already lol, but trust me go listen to the Corgan - Rogan podcast!!

Among the best guitar things in this song is in my opinion a quite simple one; the Bb (or whatever chord it is) that James starts to hammer at 2:50 (go to 2:49 to hear it come in) - it really lifts things up. Here it sounds even better than the Mellon Collie recording where I just noticed it kind of fades in instead of starting directly when Billy sings ”…same.” It's also a bit more present (less in the background) here in this performance. Great stuff. :)

But then I listened to her 2 performances on this Howard Stern KZbin clips. HOLY FUCK SHE CAN SING AMAZING!! It’s nothing like the record!! She can sing 10x better than you think! Seriously I’m a die hard Metal, hard rock, alternative/grunge fan, but go listen to her All The Good Girls Go To Hell video and come back and tell me your jaw didn’t fucking drop basically in the first 5 seconds she begins singing!! For me that was THE music performance of the whole year at least, I haven’t been so stunned and impressed in a long time. Doing it acoustic in Howard’s studio, she did it quite a bit different than the album. I even posted it to a bunch of my random followers (which does include a significant amount of Billie Eilish fans) and then a poll “Which is better: the acoustic live Howard Stern version of this song? Or the original album version?” (And obviously I assumed all the Eilish fans would be coming in heavily biased towards the album version they already know.) The results stunned me!! Something like 20:1 Stern/Acoustic vs Album!!!! THATS how good it is!

I love that kind of shit!!! These live performances are always great to see what they really sound like on 1 spontaneous take - but that bit Howard did at the end is even better! Bc you could tell they had no idea that was coming, Billy and James kinda look back and forth and you can read their body language how they communicate to sync who’s gonna do what & when. For me that spontaneous little jam session is when you strip everything away and find out if a musician(s) is the real deal. 👍🏼

Lets go with epic or legendary.... For me, when Billy gets back to some of his early style riffs and even some of his heavy shit... ill see him as legendary. The dude has grown and evolved and come full circle. Time to get back to his guitar playing....Pumpkins style guitars with a metal edge like he and James killed back in the day.
@ThorCarlton4 жыл бұрын
D'arcy might be in the band if she were a little more mature.
@Syclone00444 жыл бұрын
Thor Carlton Yeah I remember reading Billy’s side of it, on some metal blog news site, they actually posted a loooong stream of iPhone text message screenshots from D’Arcy between her and Billy, discussing/negotiating her joining their new tour (a few years ago). D’Arcy was the person being interviewed by the website and she provided all the texts. And she even profusely responded to the comments at the bottom (using handle “Fey Whutt”) But man, it was like Billy bending over backwards, really being fucking accommodating, GENEROUSLY ACCOMODATING, offering to make it all work with whatever HER schedule allows so she can tend to her existing responsibilities she was concerned about, they’d put her up in hotels, fly her back and forth and take care of all that. And he gives her so many chances and he’s reasonable and she just acts like a petulant child and throws tantrums over relatively minor shit, like... totally not recognizing that Billy (who IS still successful and relevant) is GIVING her a sight-unseen position back in the band LITERALLY WITHOUT HEARING HER PLAY ANYTHING FOR OVER 19 YEARS! And she totally blows it! It’s worth reading for sure! It won’t be hard to find. No offense to anyone suffering from it, but she comes off like a combination of an addict and a classic girl with Borderline Personality Disorder. Just totally unreasonable and unpredictable from day to day. She made that so clear with her text behavior, ultimately Billy saw it was obvious she was NOT going to be reliable enough to have on the tour, despite their best hopes and efforts. And I swear he STILL took her abuse and STILL offered her to make at least a handful of ‘special guest’ performances bc he knew the fans wanted her on the tour so bad!!

I wish I had this kind of access to legendary musicians. Not so much being the solitary audience member but the ability to dissect their songwriting process. "Play this riff. Now you play the other riff. Now both of you play them together." I can think of so many bands I'd like to do this to.

Jay Nichols it’s just sad the wrong riff caught his attention, the chorus uses an extremely common chord progressions. Nothing wrong with using them, they sound great in this song, but if you wanna talk about a section of the song with a great riff, it’s that baseline from the verse that’s just genius, simplicity at its finest
@JT-ss6si4 жыл бұрын
Of course, that sounds like fun. Dissecting music and trying out different parts. Without the glamour, without the shine, without the spotlight. Just mistakes, laughter, bad jokes, backhanded comments, and more laughter.

Jay Nichols • I think you found a great idea for a KZbin channel, having songwriters (famous/or not so famous) break down their songwriting techniques while playing and explaining the origins and/or inspirations of the songs. I can't say I've seen a lot of that on KZbin? It would certainly be very entertaining.
