The whole Siamese Dream album is a masterpiece. Mayonnaise is the real gem, tho. Soooooo underrated! Cheers, Teez! 🍻

I love that you appreciate the “mayonnaise guitar”. It was stolen from Billy a long time ago and he just got it back only a handful of years ago. Iconic.

@@cuteasxtreme the mayonaise guitar was used to play mayonaise. That’s why it is the mayonaise guitar. It was stolen but he just recently got it back. A story told by Billy himself.

@@michellesuh4240 the only stolen guitar I know about that Billy got back is the yellow “Gish” guitar with paint… idk if that is also the mayonnaise guitar or if that’s a different guitar or what but thanks.
@bryandaves10053 жыл бұрын
@Michael Suh , the Mayonnaise guitar, a cheap 60s-70s era Kimberly Kay, is not the guitar that was stolen. That guitar, a 70s Strat, was stolen in June of 1992 when they were playing a show in Detroit in support of Gish. They didn’t start recording tracks for Siamese Dream until December of 1992. That Iconic whistle effect on Mayonnaise happened naturally whenever he would stop playing because it’s such a cheaply built guitar. I love happy accidents that help to create such iconic songs. Mayonnaise wouldn’t be Mayonnaise without that effect

Exactly what I thought when I heard it 28 years ago “controlled chaos” with the feedback. My fav song then and still today!
@michaelkozlowski22643 жыл бұрын
Billy has said that the feedback from the guitar, which is the high pitched sound was from a cheap guitar that he was using and they liked the way it sounded so they kept it in the song. One of my favorites off my favorite Pumpkins album. Glad you liked it and enjoyed your video.
@terrilwest79683 жыл бұрын
Tagging in on this, if I remember correctly, the guitar was a pawn shop find that sounded amazing when it was played, but gave off a distorted whine when the strings were at rest. So rather than lose the amazing sounding guitar-or replacing the faulty pickups and losing that amazing tone-Billy just wrote the whine into the song. Those discordant whines are really just Billy lofting his hands from the strings and letting that busted guitar do its thing. It’s just a great example of a musician making music with anything and everything around them.
@michaelkozlowski22643 жыл бұрын
@@terrilwest7968 Thank you for expanding on that! It is a great example.
@rallokkcaz3 жыл бұрын
This actually happens when you just let any guitar feedback at high volume. I believe in the record they punched the feedback in, doesn't take away from using feedback as a super powerful part of the song. PS: I played in a ton of insanely loud tube amp bands in small rooms, so I can confirm this
@terrilwest79683 жыл бұрын
While you are correct about guitars in general, this particular guitar was different. Its electronics were so cheap that it couldn’t handle any amplification at all without whining, so they used the whine as a feature. Rolling Stone mentioned it in 2018 an article by Sophie Harris, and I’ve also seen Billy talk about it on some MTV interview from a zillion years ago that I’ll never be able to source.

I’m a melancholy guy, personally. To me, that record being as long as it is and not ever falling off for me is a real testament to this band at their finest. I can see why people prefer Siamese because I think it may be more influential, but Gish has never hit me like that. Respect though, it’s a great album and I think it’s awesome that people like yourself really dig that record that much. A testament to the band in general.

James Iha is a guitar God!
@bryandaves10053 жыл бұрын
James Iha is an excellent guitar player for sure, but this and Gish are all Billy. He overdubbed every guitar and bass track on both of those albums just because he was a perfectionist and it was more efficient for him to lay down the track than to wait for James and Darcy to get it perfect. As great as James and Darcy are at there respective instruments, Billy is a more skilled musician than either of them. Billy Chamberlain played every drum track though. Even though the rest of the band agreed to allow Billy to play all the parts other than the drums, it definitely caused tension in the band. On Meloncollie, James and Darcy played all of there own parts. I love James’ work on Zero. There’s some interviews with Butch Vig, who produced Gish and Siamese Dream, talking about it floating around on the internet.
