YASSS!! Finally a deeper vocal analysis of Billy's style (people don't understand how intentional he is). But can we just address Billy's poetic genius on this one?? I mean, all his lyrics are beautiful, but this one just hits. Fool enough to almost be it Cool enough to not quite see it Doomed Pick your pocket, full of sorrow And run away with me tomorrow June We'll try and ease the pain But somehow, we'll feel the same Well, no one knows Where our secrets go I send a heart to all my dearies When your life is so, so dreary Dream I'm rumored to the straight and narrow While the harlots of my perils Scream And I fail But when I can, I will Try to understand That when I can, I will Mother, weep the years I'm missing All our time can't be given Back Shut my mouth and strike the demons That cursed you and your reasons Out of hand and out of season Out of love and out of feeling So bad When I can, I will Words defy the plans When I can, I will Fool enough to almost be it And cool enough to not quite see it And old enough to always feel this Always old, I'll always feel this No more promise, no more sorrow No longer will I follow Can anybody hear me? I just want to be me And when I can, I will Try to understand That when I can, I will

The magic of fuzz pedals. It's a heavily clipped distortion, and they are either choosing pedals/amps that are heavily scooped in the mid-range and/or doing a good bit of mid-range scoop EQ. It's the mid-range where the grunge and dirt is. If you remove that, you are just left with deep, rich fuzz and enough sizzle on the top that it doesn't just sound dull. The bass is also set up to just sit under the guitars and provide a fat bed for them to lay in, which further emphasizes that heaviness.

Thank you so much for reviewing this song. It wasn't expected because it never got much air play and not many people know about it, save for the real TSP fans. It has one of the most beautiful and melodic intros and outros ever. Even the distorted verses have an underlying wave of melody that pulls you along, saying don't be afraid of the rip tide. I really appreciate your description of the different parts of this song. For me ... This song IS a nostalgic swim back in time to a place where my world was completely different. It is my all-time favorite song for that reason, because every time I hear it I'm right back there in the moment, when everything was possible, even though I was fool enough to almost be it, cool enough to not quite see it. 🙌

I'm an 80's teenager and I didn't know how much I needed grunge for my musical soul. Eddie and Kurt broke my heart, made me face my own ugly side, and I thank them dearly for it. Hearing this song as a kid started my life-long love of music. I had so many unintentional Corganisms in my singing voice until I learned to train them out. His vocal dynamic is still such a huge inspiration for me Thank you for diving more into The Smashing Pumpkins recently! I’d love to see you analyze their song “Bodies” next. His harsh vocals go straight into his fluffy aoli sound in the choruses, and it sounds like a magic trick to me

Artist/Song Suggestion: Alanis Morrissette - Thank You... You like unique and iconic voices, none better than her in that regard. If not familiar she had a very unique style that set her apart in all the best ways in the late 90s. Other songs of hers to consider would be "You ought to know", "Ironic", "You Learn", "Uninvited" (this one stands out), basically she is a rabbit hole of amazingness.

I love how much you totally GET The Smashing Pumpkins! The intro does indeed sound like someone noodling on guitar - in a dark quiet summer night in '93.

I remember back in 95, my buddies and I sitting in the dorm, having already jammed on our own guitars, sat down to "relax", and one of my friends puts this album on. I knew a couple of the songs on here, but I hadn't heard Mayonnaise yet. When I tell you that it definitely got me emotional, know that I was nearly in tears. It's a powerful song that I still love nearly 30 years later. So happy that you loved it.

This song still hits me like it did when I first heard it all those years ago. I know this is a vocal analysis but what most people miss now new to listening to SP is the impact that Jimmys drumming had on those early recordings. His drumming is so musical and expressive which is a perfect match for Billys vocals, guitar playing and song writing.

Jimmy's playing is always perfect for the song. He's soooo good.

Siamese Dream (release July 93) launched the SPs into superstardom. I was at Ohio State in 93 and the Pumpkins did a few warm up dates before the BIG SD tour. They did one in Columbus Ohio at a gogo club that held about 500 people (August 93'). I was there, against the stage, something I'll never forget. My ticket was printed on construction paper and hand numbered! God I wish I still had that ticket!

Smashing Pumpkins will always be my favorite band, Billy just wrote masterpieces back to back when he was younger, and now that he's older he's so much more consistent in his live performances. All around a fantastic band.

I love the videos you comment on where you go into a little bit of detail about the anatomical parts of the body and how they affect sound. I nerd out just a little. Hearing you describe all the different specific reasons sounds are being made, HOW those sounds are made physically inside the singer's mouth, and how those are all used in concert (pun happily coincidental🤭) to affect an audience is always hilarious. And while hilarious is a wonderful quality for someone like you who's a teacher of sorts, the anatomical and biological accuracy you maintain while doing the things, is just delightful.
@mathompson53187Ай бұрын
It's an excellent song. It wasn't one of the original singles and so wasn't what got the big radio exposure, but everyone who had the Siamese Dream album pretty much lists it a favorite of the band (imo rightly so).

My most favorite Pumpkins song by far!! Holy crap…..great song to cover. This has always been one of my favorites from the entire era for how well it mixed and played with tonality to drive the emotion into it. The melodic and sweet to the crunch and back to the sweet and melodic…..with a spacey phased solo in there to soar on. This is great analysis on Billy’s strengths that drive this song. As usual I’ve never thought about the singing much. But this approach mixing in with what the instruments are doing has always just made this song soar and fly.

Most guitarists started with a cheap guitar that would get horrible feedback under distortion. I've always loved the way this song uses it, like you said. Another song with a great use of (more controlled) feedback is Tyler by The Toadies. I highly recommend you give that one a try.

Top six albums of the 90s go: 1)Nevermind, then in no particular order: Superunknown, Siamese Dream, Achtung Baby, Ten, BloodSugarSexMagik. All masterpieces, all came out within 3 years of each other. It was a magical time. Rounding out the top 10: Rage (any album), Tool (Aenima), AIC (any album), STP (No. 4)
