SMC TR-12 12" Oscillating Desk/Table Fan | Initial Checkout

The initial checkout of a 12" SMC (Shell Manufacturing Company) oscillating table/desk fan model TR-12. This is one of the childhood fans I've been looking for, I remember seeing one of these in a math class back in middle school. Like many of the fans the teachers brought in, it was absolutely useless given the size of the room and nobody felt much of any relief from it. Yet there it was, running day after day, because back in my time, when it was hot, we still went to school.

Your story about the math class reminds me of when I was in 6th grade. Our homeroom teachers (who also taught some of our other classes) for most of the year only had a Sears badged Galaxy 12 inch oscillator. One visiting staff member even made fun of how that it was the only fan in the classroom (even calling it "that little piddly thing" or something like that). It was only towards the end of the year where they bought a second fan...which was one of the small Honeywell turbo fans.

One of those little Turbo fans is even worse! Even the box fans were pretty much useless in the classrooms.

@@JordanU Not gonna lie, Those pesky 3733's are pretty bad, I would be so mad if I ever saw one in a classroom, A quiet classroom with a air restricted noisy box fan is a big no no

I remembered seeing these in the hd during early childhood, the schools I went to have central air and 1 year in middle school (they built a new one almost 2 years ago and tore down the one I went to), fans (some brought from home by the staff and some from the school) were used in the classrooms because the ac broke down.

Nice find Jordan! Funny Story of the Evil Barcodes too. So odd that it has a dirty cord and a rather clean and tidy fan mind you though the fan is dusty in my opinion.

i saw a fan like this on the curb near my house about a year back, i would've picked it up but it must've sat near a window its whole life as it was almost fully brown in the back of the fan.

So I have a translucent amber galaxy fan from the 80s that really needs a cleaning in the barings but the motor screws are so stuck that one of them practically stripped. How could I get them off easier, and does the motor temperature make a difference?

If the right size screw driver doesn't remove them, you'll probably have to drill it out and replace.

These are somewhat uncommon fans. There aren’t as many of these as the TH-12’s.

@@JordanU I think I also recall seeing one of these TR12’s in one of the classrooms at my old high school. This was about 8 or 9 years ago. As far as I can remember it still worked, but had a broken oscillator. That fan eventually disappeared. Not sure if it got moved or if they threw it out, yet there used to be one of these back at my old high school. It was a long time ago.
