How To Refresh your Old Subaru Engine

Today we are refreshing an old EJ25 out of a 2007 Subaru WRX STI, This engine is getting completely resealed, which means Oil Pan, Every Seal, Every Gasket, Heads are getting re-decked, Oil seals on the valves, lapping the vales literally everything. I do all my own maintenance on my vehicles, learning from channels like yours, and due to that I pay attention religiously to all the gauges because I know how much time I put into my vehicles. Great video! When I disassemble something, I like to break the bolts loose by hand, then use the impact to unscrew them. That way you will see if a bolt is stuck before you break it off with an impact

17:16 Tip: These bolts are M11x1.25 threaded. If you wanted to chase the threads, you'll probably have a hard time finding one that is long enough, but OSG makes one that is 6", or you can use a 7/16 - 20 pulley tap.

finally got to the end of this video - man that sucks. After i got mine running i was paranoid as heck for about 5 weeks - i did a quick few miles test... then checked stuff... drove a bit further and rechecked.. i kept doing that over and over and funnily enough i was paranoid mostly about cooling system because its such an easy thing to lose check of esp when your enjoying the sudden power and response hike and you can feel how strong the engine is. I'm so sorry to hear about the owners misfortune but man that is epic sportsmanship helping him out again - i hope he gets it running soon with your help and can finally enjoy his subaru. As an ex skyline owner (I've had 4 Skylines over 15 yrs) i will say that its so easy for cars to quickly run hot. I'll also add i've had way more fun in my subaru taking it through the twisty roads in ANY condiitons and feeling confident vs hoping the 4wd system in the GTR will kick in as it should lol.

@@Smeedia yeah I think it's the AWD vs 4WD ...I had two gtst and one ran 500 and was hilarious as long as its straight.. any power out of corners.. nope! The safest of the lot was a 600bhp r32gtr and even that bit me once or twice especially on hard braking with the heavy nose and light back end!!! My subaru is slower for now but man it's more fun 😎👍

I feel for him too. My upper radiator hose popped the other day when I was on my way home. Luckily I caught it before coolant temps could rise. Replaced the hose in 15 minutes and burped the coolant system and it was good to go.

Been a car guy for a while, most people think these engines are complex. Quite the opposite. They are built with logic and assembled to be serviceable, unlike modern transverse V engines or even some inline engines.

This is pretty much exactly what my Ej255 is going to get whenever I get around to delivering it to my friend. This video made me question if I should get new valve springs & retainers. I wasn't planning on doing them but now I'm considering it. When the radiator popped on my VQ I hadn't noticed it for a minute, then I saw the temp gauge & looked in my rear view, yikes. I made the executive decision to drive the extra quarter to mile and get in the work parking lot instead of pulling off on the side of a rather busy road with potential police interaction. So far it hasn't seemed to have bit me in the ass, engine seems "healthy" more or less over a year out from that experience. That shit was pegged at the top of the gauge & pouring out white smoke.

Hey Tanner, I work on these and other subaru stuff for a living, Mac Tools sells a socket called R.B.R.T. and with using an old belt to hold the cam gears and a good Ratchet or a Aircat 1/2 impact Ive had tons of success. Trust me, myself and many other Techs hate those cam gear bolts with a passion.

Month ago I was in similar situation. My radiator cracked and my temp went high to 110C (230F). Fortunately I have an app on my head-unit that monitors all sensors through tactrix cable. Don't trust your oem temperature gauge on the gauge cluster. When it goes up, often it's to late. I saw a huge disproportion between indication. My advice: Buy external water temp gauge, or read it directly from the ecu.

Oh man been there, had a turbo charged 99 325is that grenaded in a parking lot a week after I bought it. Drove it from Seattle back to SF on a popped head gasket had no idea haha. Milk shake started pouring out everywhere it could that night. Saw the temp gauge spike as I was pulling in the lot. Shut her down and coasted into a parking space. Had it rebuilt and enjoyed the heck out of it until I had to sell it to pay some bills. Now I have an 07 legacy GT limited that I hope to keep and build forever. I’m a fully converted Subie bro now lol. 🤙

If a customer came to our shop, paid for a service like that, and didn't make it home. No amount of hose clamps not my fault excuses is going to work. Great video and explanation but if you know so well those clamps are bad, why didn't you replace it when you drove down and picked up the turbo gasket from Subaru? Could have grabbed a hose clamp too.

I did a motor refresh on my forester right before a long move across the country and I encountered the same problem. Leaky lower rad hose.. Thankfully I caught it, but I can't tell you how stressful it was trying to keep coolant temps low on mountain passes and in desolate areas. Even put 2 worm gear clamps on it, which slowed the leak, but would always loosen up over time. Definitely going to have to look into getting those spring clamps.

I've been using a machinist block, 3m tacky spray and sand paper to flatten my heads. So far so good

bought a brand new EJ207 bottom end and stuck it in my bugeye wagon... set of ARP studs, Cosworth 0.8mm head gaskets, refreshed the turbo (Vf35) and pink 550cc injectors (565?) - bit of a power hike :) Added a set of D2 6 pots and 4 pots (rear) and 356mm discs all round.. Some BC coilovers, Brand new gearbox and engine mounts and a bunch of poly bushes and new uprated clutch - goes quite well now :) I'm still running ej205 WRX heads so a bit laggy lower down but once it gets moving its away. Next mods to add would be a set of lumpy cams but the main thing i would like to drop in is a good condition as new as possible 6 speed STI gearbox.. or go full send and stuff a sequential in for the lulz

I had a similar thing happen to my 05 sti, Had a crack in the oem radiator at about 100k miles and temps were off the chart. Went home and refilled radiator with water and it held until I got the radiator replaced. Got lucky on that one.

Great video as always thank you for taking the time to show the complete process. Regarding the failed clamp- anytime i take a radiator out of a car for the first time since its been in my possession- its standard practice to replace both coolant hoses and associated clamps. Cheap insurance.

Yup, worm drive and t-bolts don't belong on anything where temperatures change like in a cooling system. The constant spring pressure of the spring clamp accommodates the expansion/contraction of the parts. Looking forward to the build on young fellows engine!

​@@Smeedia .. I just replaced my upper rad hose & couldn't get the original OEM spring clamp over the new (slightly thicker) upper hose.. hadn't considered thermal dynamics of hose clamps .. thanks for the tip.. I'll shop for a better replacement

Not sure if anyone will see this but I refreshed my engine based off of this video and I’m not able to get my engine to start. Not trashing the video at all, it was super helpful! I’m fairly certain it’s something electronic. I get everything to turn over and everything seems and sounds fine but can’t get a full start. What should I look at?

just so you know, color only matters for subaru oem coolant. there are many other coolants that meet the specs that subaru requires, and color will vary

Walk in an AutoZone and see if you still think that statement is true. They have about 8 to 10 different antifreeze color options for lots of different vehicles. Such color descriptions as pink-red color that's on the jug.

Believe it or not, but lots of mechanics from my country do not like spring clamps and prefer quality worm drive clamps. Spring clamps are treated as single use only as they lose tension, and mechanics cannot risk a car coming back with a leak. There's nothing wrong with worm drive clamps as long as they are not over tightened and damaged. I've never had a worm drive fail, but I've had spring clamps leak. Love your work, keen to see the H6 subie on the dyno.

If unsure it's best to just replace with another OEM spring clamp. What helps is using the correct spring clamp tool, so not to damage and weaken the clamp tension.

Everyone who works on something has a diffrent presence. For me I prefer using OE spring clamps, they've always been reliable and never failed on me.

@@Smeedia back in the day everything was those crappy worm drive clamps. I resisted at first but now all I use now is the original OEM spring clamps or equivalent. You have to think those engineers must know something right 🤔

@@Smeedia .. so glad I watched & caught my mistake.. my OEM spring clamps wouldn't fit, so- I replaced w/ wormgear ones; but I just found constant tension hose clamps at O'Reilly's (Gates Green Stripe 1-9/16 Inch To 2-1/2 Inch Hose Clamp - 32732) .. same price as the worm gear ones I'd used; now I know better.. thanks!

Subaru cv axle nuts fit perfectly over those pesky stuck cam bolts. I usually just weld it onto the bolt with a MIG welder and use an impact comes right off. Credit goes to outfront motorsports for that, they have a nice video on the subject!

I use green coolant in my beater Subie since the headgaskets are slowly going you can just run into any store and grab coolant if needed haha. I totally agree on using blue coolant in any subaru that you plan on keeping on term though.

sad day for kiddo. i had a lesson like that... ya ever done 70mph in first gear... fresh engine and transmission... 50 miles on them... gas pedal was cut off, stick only, my boot got wedged with that stick to the floor. i was running out of road otherwise i'd have just shifted... got the car stopped and.... poor little automatic tried to move in park, reverse was neutral, neutral was 1st, and so were the other 2 gears. rip th350. got a 4 speed for the 76 camaro i was in at the time and learned how to convert from auto to manual, how to do a clutch, rebuilt the manual, hurst comp+ shifter and all. good times. hopefully kiddo chooses to bounce back and take all your help!
