Electrical/automation engineer here. Solder is a far superior electrical connection when compared to butt splices. It ensures full electron flow as apposed to crimps that can become loose over time due to normal heat cycles of the seasons. That being said, you def want to use proper heatshrink etc. BTW...LOVE your videos!!!! Can hardly wait for the STI 2.0!!!

I've always been under the assumption that for Motorsports wiring solder will crack from vibration and break over time leading to a weak connection? 🤔 and thank you! That should be a fun one to do here soon. Already miss that car 🔥
@philipmclamore
@philipmclamore 2 жыл бұрын
@@Smeedia This is the first time you've ever responded to me. Haha, but my opinion was only that solder is much like welding, in that the two structure elements become one. But later in your video the butt crimp ends were absolutely the way it should have been done. I was thinking splice instead of termination point. My bad. Although you may be referring to unleaded solder. leaded solder is still available and it won't crack etc. Cool thing to know...NASA only allows a splice if done with solder and in a certain way. Interesting stuff. Go live again soon so I can DOE NO!

@AzureCrux 2 жыл бұрын
@@philipmclamore fundamentally, you're right, but most every OEM recommends crimp over solder . Soldering IS better, but a bad solder job doesn't last nearly as well as an average crimp job.
@dannywiley4072
@dannywiley4072 2 жыл бұрын
Solder is not for motorsport use. You will very rarely find solder on a motorsport harness. A proper crimp is much stronger. Soldering a pcb and electronics is different than soldering wires that are under a lot of heat and stress. 2 different applications. I would also recommend if possible depinning the connectors and rerunning one single wire instead of a bunch of crimps. I recommend taking some HP Academy classes on motorsport wiring.

@@philipmclamore like mentioned above, in your description most solder joints don't see vibration and temp swings like an engine bay. I've been a 12v tech for decades and I never solder. They almost always fail when I did it.

Small point to note but the add-a-fuses are technically directional. These descriptions are when you are looking at the add-a-fuse with the pigtail on the RIGHT side. In the "correct" orientation 12V runs up the left pin, splits between the 2 fuses, and then down the pigtail. In the other orientation 12V runs up the right, through the spot where the existing fuse goes, then goes through the new fuse and down the pigtail. Not saying you can't run the fuses in series but the intent of an add-a-fuse is to run the circuits in parallel so you can bump up the fuse size of the new circuit if you wish. I added heated side mirrors to a car that already had a circuit for them, but trying to find the wiring wasn't worth it. So I only ran a fuse for my new circuit and left the existing open. I learned this about add-a-fuses the hard way.

So, kind of some constructive criticism lol. The only reason I would use an add a fuse would be to power a relay. Relays dont take much power at all. Less risk there. So use the add a fuse to power a relay for the 12v switch source then have an additional fuseblock for all your 12v switch sources. You can power all your gauges from the fuse block and have additional sources for other things later. Saying add a fuse and proper hook up just doesn't quite go together lol. Love your videos keep up the good work.

Are you sure it wasn’t a grounding issue? I didn’t see where the grounds went, but if you dint scuff the grounding area for that stack of ground wires…….. I know you already know this but you usually figure it out pretty fast. I just find it odd that 2 AEM gauges that were brand new didn’t receive ground. I am glad they are replacing them but I also wonder if there could have been a simple grounding issue. Just up up the amazing content cause I wanna ride with you in these builds, I know you will finish what you start…. And it’s gonna be amazing 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

Verified grounds, all the gauges share 1 central ground on the chassis, if none of them worked I would think that. But the fact that 2 work kinda eliminates that, plus verified with the multimeter 🙏

That oil port you're looking at on the head is a regulated port. You won't see true pressure there. You can go to the oil filter housing, there are 2 ports or swap out the stock sensor on the back of the block for the dummy light and put the relocation sensor there.

Man all that gauge wiring makes having a single CAN Gauge feel like a lifesaver. One gauge that can display anything the ECU sees. Im using mine for CANLambda, boost, oil pressure, IAT, Coolant temp, battery Voltage. Obviously you need a CAN Capable ECU. Also, if you wanted to minimalize those power and ground wiring, you could run the Add-a-fuse to a small bussbar behind the gauges and power them all there. Same thing for the ground. Good work though my dude!

That part you don't know what it is and its 3d printed is basically just what you get with a set of wrenches. I suggest a dual alligator clip soldering setup. That way nothing will move as much and they usually come with a magnifying glass for small jobs. And your butt joint crimp connectors. I love the ones with solder in them, weatherproof and it solders the wires when you heat gun them for a much better connection

Crimped connections will break long before a soldered one does. If soldered correctly it'll last the life of the car.

I have that gauge in my 93 honda integra and it works fine so it might just be the gauge itself honestly because I changed the sensor on my temp gauge and it still reads wrong so I'm sure if I get a new gauge it will work fine gauges come junk all the time once I bought a brand new tbi holley 670cfm for my 92z71 and out the box had a bad injector and they ate 137 for one😢😂 so yea products that ate bad get placed on the shelves and Noone knows it but the people who get screwed when they end up with that bad part that seems new

Hey, I know you made a video on the DCCD already but, I'm about to STI trans swap my WRX and I neglected to buy a DCCD controller. Will I be okay to drive home (~80miles) from where I do the swap? Silly question but you seem really knowledgable on the subject

It seems like AEM gauges are shit. Correct me if I’m wrong but spending $200 plus on gauges should come with acknowledgment that they work. Yet I’ve seen multiple videos of them not working. Do they not test them before the hit the product line?
@Smeedia

They slap a QC sticker on the gauge but I don't think they actually test them 😮‍💨

Not a solder gun in sight, but calls it proper with fuse taps 😒
@Smeedia
@Smeedia 3 ай бұрын
You don’t solder in auto use, solder will crank over time from NVH, open barrel crimps are top teir as they act as a cold weld, but proper butt crimps work just as well. 10/10 would not suggest solder in auto wiring
