I feel it’s important to point out that while a catalytic converter does reduce CO emissions, the main purpose of the design is actually to reduce smog emissions. Smog is a catch-all term for oxides of nitrogen (NOₓ) which are a medley of molecules formed during combustion which consist of a nitrogen atom bonded with various numbers of oxygen atoms, hence the ‘x’ in the name. The key to the cat’s function lies in bond energies of molecules, and the triple covalent bond in NOₓ molecules have much a much higher bond energy than the double bonds in CO, CO₂ O₂, N₂, and other common exhaust products. To remove the NOₓ molecules, the cat media reacts with the exhaust gas by becoming extremely hot, reaching temperatures comparable to the combustion chamber where the NOₓ was formed. Since it takes the same amount of energy to break the bonds as it does to form them, the NOₓ molecules disassociate into monoatomic nitrogen and oxygen as they pass through, and when they exit the cat the temperature drops below what would be required for NOₓ molecules to re-form. The result is a significant decrease in smog emissions and the presence of smog is the smell the emits from a cat-less setup.

I just got the Invidia catless downpipe and it's amazing. More flames, pops and noise. I had a Grimmspeed look-alike and I ran into a fitment issue because the internal wastegate was hitting a flange on the downpipe. EWG coming in the future...
@realtech93454 жыл бұрын
BOOST CREEP FIX!!! I used to own a 2003 WRX and then a 2004 STi. There is a fix we used to do on those for boost creep on a STOCK TURBO. We would enlarge toe orifice on the wastegate. I did several of them for other people too. When you have the downpipe off of the turbo you remove the clip and rod from the wastegate valve. Open the valve and grind a VERY SMALL amount off the wastegate hole and keep it round. You can always take off more, you can never put it back. if you take too much material off you won't get enough boost. Solved the creep issue on my STi with a catless downpipe and many others too.

So I went back to watch this as I have a question regarding cattless down pipe and boost creep. 2015 wrx twinscroll on cattless down pipe. Can I add external waste gate, and if so your recommendation to prevent boost creep?
@Smeedia3 жыл бұрын
Yes you can and the EWGs will mitigate all the issues with boost creep. For those that stay IWG you can only mitigate it so much with a tune since it is more of a mechanical issue than anything else
@bobby_t71493 жыл бұрын
@@Smeedia Yep, dumb question!!! 100% clicked right after asking. Total mechanical problem. Faster spool=more air= high pressure in combustion, possibly insufficient fuel etc.= bye bye motor... New header it is...fml.. Atleast I have your videos to remind me how minimal my car issues are..🤣🤣🤣

by heat wrapped is that the foil type material? I bought mine with the fabric-like material. but is not the full pipe is only closer to the turbo
@Smeedia4 жыл бұрын
The fabric material, it's made of either fiber glass or titanium. The foil is reflection tape to bounce heat off of objects

@@Smeedia oh actually i had a huge leak in the up pipe i forgot about so that was probably why. It was an hks one so i didnt expect it to have issues but 12+ years of heat broke it i guess. Huge leak at the turbo flange, noticed it when i put my EWG on. That would definitely explain it

Good info! I may add - If you want to run an OEM VFxx turbo on a catless downpipe, I recommend porting the internal wastegate (which is what I did on my car) It’s a simple process. Remove your turbo, take off the wastegate actuator, and remove the V-band clamp that attaches the exhaust housing. Use a mallet and remove the exhaust housing, being careful not to damage the turbine wheel. Take a Dremel and a grinding bit, and round off the corner that leads exhaust gas to the wastegate. DO NOT ENLARGE THE WASTEGATE HOLE, you’re simply smoothening the hard edge that leads to the wastegate. This encourages exhaust flow out the wastegate instead of going through the turbine. There are a few videos and forum posts on this process, so do your research. I’m on a VF48 e85 at 20 psi, never had an issue with creep. A 3-port EBCS might help, but there’s nothing that can truly eliminate creep other than having a larger wastegate Last and most important, GET A REAL TUNE 🤣

Is it normal for a catless car to smoke out of the exhaust? My 2003 bugeye started doing that right after I had a catless downpipe installed.
@Smeedia3 жыл бұрын
New exhausts will smoke a little, what color was the smoke?
@haroldthebrokenwrx33943 жыл бұрын
@@Smeedia I believe it was white. Smells awful. I was told that the smell is “like burnt spark plugs”. But that wouldn’t be causing the smoke. I was also told that something was broken when my exhaust was installed. Not sure what but it had to do with some sort of piping (somewhere along the exhaust).
@Smeedia3 жыл бұрын
If its a new exhaust there is typically some oil still in the piping from when it was made so it burns off. Keep an eye on it for a day or so and see what happens. If it goes away, all good. If it's white smoke that is a symptom of burning coolant
@haroldthebrokenwrx33943 жыл бұрын
@@Smeedia Awesome, thank you. And what if I don’t see any change in coolant? I’m usually keen on filling the coolant up and having it changed. Any suggestions on what I should do?

Tough choice, I live in Ohio, I don't think they mess with the emissions check. If i Go catless to match my Invidia R400, still need to get protune in order to run the intake as well. But with the situation of "THAT" the tuner is not working at the time. Good thing you clarified running catless won't work with OTS Maps.

So if i install a catless downpipe and get a pro tune for the boost creep will that stop any problems that could potentially happen?
@Smeedia3 жыл бұрын
No, boost creep is more of a mechanical issue than a tuning one. Best thing would be to get an EWG with a tune. A tune by itself will help but won't completely mitigate the problem.
@Paul-dark25 Жыл бұрын
Will I have boost creep on a fully stock but decatted 2008 S-GT Hatch? The first cat is original but emptied the second cat is straight pipe with o2 sensor and spacer. (Its a ej20X japanese wrx)

I have a gr supra and I want to install a catless Downpipe, do I still need the EWG you were talking about in the video? Because the supra comes with electronic waste gate that suppose to keep the boost in check. Thank you 😄
@Smeedia2 жыл бұрын
Ideally yes, but I belive electronic wastegates are still subject to boost creep. It's more of a mechanical limit then anything

Smeedia yeah apparently from what I’ve gathered so far from MAPerformance is their jpipe you can get catted or GESI. Which I’m assuming it’s just a high flow cat from what I’m reading but it’s like $200 more and I’m wondering if it’s really worth it. Guess it’s made out of metal when others have ceramic. Beats me. Just want what’s better for my 15 wrx. Assuming GESI
