I find it interesting how many people take this as a "I hate my parents" song. I hear it and think about how he doesn't want to be a continuation of a cycle of life that was continued by his parents. I hear it as a drive to live your life to the maximum and not to let the societal restraints put on our parents continue with us. Our parents mostly have good intentions for us, but life beats us down so much sometimes that it's tough to not let that into parenting and having kids see the struggles. As hard as parents try, sometimes the kids do see and feel the struggles too, and that's what he wants his kids to never feel/see/experience. It's not about crappy parents, it's about breaking the cycle.

Loved this song when I was younger, it sounded like he was rebelling against how is parents were and the world. Now that I'm older I see now it's a child's dream, your parents were the way they were due to as much environment as need. Your dad worked his life away not by choice but because no one hands you anything. Your mother lived in fear because the world is truly a scary place while also being an uncaring cruel thing. You can't be what ever you want no matter how much you want it since your desire means nothing to the world and how far you get really is just a matter of where you were born and to whom with a dash of talent as well as dumb luck. Life kicks you in the face sooner or later and you see it for what it really is and you realize billions before you have trod the same path and all ended up in the same place. So don't dream big and resent your family for being the broken imperfect people they are but be sure to cherish what you love and always be ready to take care of yourself because no one else will.

This song makes me miss driving my fusion in the rain at night with my window down. Just feeling the rain sting my arm on the empty roads, wanting nothing more than to get home and lie down after a day at work, singing along to this tune on the CD player. A very specific but fond memory. All I can think about when I hear this song is that car now, and how my sister totalled it. I loved that car...

Good song! I have good parents/a family that treat me well though. Both my mother and biological father never married when they had me. Now my mom is married to a man that treats me and the family very good and loving. He’s a great and intelligent man and I’ve known him since I was 4 years old. My biological father married to someone who is now my step mother. She’s a good mom to me and to my siblings. And my step dad treat my brothers very well too. I am very lucky and grateful to have 2 families that love me unconditionally. Sometimes I do feel like they don’t care about me, but eventually I do know that they care and want the best of me. Both my families are supportive of eachother and I’m happy for that. Not many families are like that though. Whoever has a family or families that don’t treat you very well, I pray that you will find a way to get them to love, care and support you. Even if they still don’t, I hope you get through life full of good things and meeting people who really care about you. Life isn’t always easy, but it’s worth living and fighting for😊❤️🙏

The funny thing is that this song hits the nail on the head when it comes to WHY christians stick to their beliefs. It's FEAR. Fear of hell, god's wrath, and no longer having the certainty of heaven, fear of being wrong about everything. I know this because I had to face my fear to overcome that way of seeing things. It was hard, but it was liberating beyond anyone's wildest dreams.
@sparkytheskater6 жыл бұрын
As a Christian myself that's simply not the case, for me no matter how much I am threatened I cant just believe something for no other reason than fear, which is why I was agnostic since I was about 12, at 22 I found reason to believe, alot of them actually, I gave my life to Christ because ultimately, Jesus spoke about the human condition like no other human who ever lived, and he nailed it, many other things lead me to trust in Christ but fear just isnt one of them.

My father beat my mother to the point where she left with 7 kids of his. Started a new life, but was always afraid of him, up to the point where he gave up and started drinking to fix his problems. The kids had to decide over the years whether it was worth even being around him, one by one deciding they couldn't deal with it. He left a mark on everyone of us, but we made it out ok. Not great, but we never gave up on eachother. All the troubles our mother had to deal with, she still is the strongest person I've ever known, and to this day always brings a smile to our faces.

I feel compelled to share my story here. I've been suicidal for years, but empathy keeps me alive. It's a painful, and horrible existence really. Used to fight my dad. Alot. I hated him, and still can't forgive him in his fragile, elder years. I take care of him alot. I hate, but love him. Yes, he shot at me, he may of molested my sister and brother. But I love the old bastard regardless. He tried to kill me, and yet, I'd kill for him. Anyone really. I love humanity to much. I gave faith, don't wait if

To me, this isn't really a "I hate my parents" song. The meaning to me translates to not being hinged by fear, standing up against others telling you that you can't do something and living up to your true potential. My mom is also very religious and my dad has been staying in the same company for more than 40 years. It doesn't mean however that they're bad people. Sometimes, having a higher position of power can mean that you spend less time with your family. My dad wanted to put his family first before anything else, and I respect his decision because of that.

And I dont want to live like my father! He can be really mean and im not talking about like 'take out the trash or your grounded' type thing. And he gives up all the time too.
@charleywaynehinkle63585 жыл бұрын
Yeah its a pretty simple song. His mom didnt believe in herself to do anything grand with her life and his father found a blue collar job that paid the bills and never did anything grand with his life. The singer sees how they both never took a risk to be something greater than average and he doesn't want to do that. Simple no hate in this song.
