I kinda wish they pushed the movie more towards a psycho-thriller with horror elements as opposed to a standard horror. Like basically set it up and end it with the audience not knowing if she is actually being haunted or experiencing severe trauma from both watching her mom die and a patient commiting suicide in front of her. I feel the pieces were all there, they just needed to tell the story a little differently

@lukaajlovanovich1606 I think you miss-read my comment 😅. Basically, I was saying I wish they had edited the movie, so it wasn't so obvious that she was being haunted, that you have to figure it out. Basically, like in Shutter Island, how, in the end, it never solidifies whether or not Leo's character is actually a patient or if hes being tricked

See I think making you have to guess if she was haunted or not seems cliche. Like every movie does that "are they crazy or not". I liked the ending && it scared me bc I have alot of trauma && not being able to escape it && passing it on is messed up.

@Starry_Skye22 I get that. Just my personal feelings on it since I personally get more into movies that makes me kinda have to think about what exactly is going on as opposed to it being more spelled out. Just helps me get a little more invested in the character.

I just gotta be honest the dead cat scene broke me for a minute. I experienced so many emotions at 1 time that I literally stared straight ahead, mouth open, trying to process all of them. Disgust at seeing a dead cat, horror at at the kid opening what he thought was his present to find a dead animal, sadness at the cat dying, pain at the woman grieving her cat, more horror at the situation in general, traumatized at the situation in general, and even more horror at mentally putting myself in her shoes, fear at *my* cat dying (irl)(one of my cats passed away a few weeks ago), as well as anxiety and nausea. It basically made me feel almost every negative emotion all at once.😳😬😅

Confidentiality DOES end when there is a crime. Psychologists and psychiatrists can report things to police if they believe the person is a danger to themselves or others. When Dylan mentioned that they should have developed her character more it got me thinking about where the best place to put scenes like that would be. Imo they should have had a patient share a traumatic backstory similar to her own that would trigger flashbacks for her so we can see the relationship between her and her mom. Or maybe just the stress from seeing the first girl would trigger flashbacks for her, and then she's just reliving her trauma which causes her to be more withdrawn. So her coworkers take notice and ask if she's ok but then she gets super defensive, which shows more of her personality. I think these two things would really develop her as a main character and would have made the ending all the more fucked up when she dies.
@ositaiza888
@ositaiza888 9 ай бұрын
yea like she was getting defensive with ppl but not enough for her to feel like this is part of her personality. her fiance could've said that she's always closing herself off to him and that's why he called her psychiatrist to the house bc he's lost. or even have her dreams at night be the demon making her relive her traumatic childhood or smth

It’s ironic that this movie is about trauma, yet I have very fond memories of it. In my last year of high school, the student committee decided to host a movie night in the school’s auditorium. They held a vote for which movie we’d watch, and Smile got chosen. My friends and I decided to attend. In total we were 7 people in the friend group. A lot of people came, and the vibes were super cozy. Everyone was decked out in pajamas and comfy clothes, there were snacks, even blankets too. I brought my bunny plushie with me. My friends and I sat in the back of the auditorium. The experience was really fun. Since we sat in the back, we had the best view when it came to seeing people’s reactions to the movie. We laughed every time someone screamed or jolted (which happened a lot!), and I even saw a guy crawling behind a group of girls, scaring them shitless. The best part was that we genuinely found the movie terrifying. It feels so fun and validating to be scared shitless when everyone else is also scared shitless. It was hilarious to scream when everyone else screamed. My friend found the movie so scary that she started played Hay Day on her phone to distract herself. I was clinging to my guy friend like a baby koala during the end of the movie. We did find the ending of the movie disappointing, though... Personally, I thought it’d be cliché, but also fitting, if it ended with the demon disappearing because the MC defeated/overcame her trauma. After the movie ended, we went to grab our stuff in the lockers. However, since it was late at night, the hallways were dark and the doors were locked. Which wasn’t really ideal when a) we needed to get to our lockers, which were located behind the doors b) we’d just seen a terrifying horror movie. I think we were stuck in there for 30 minutes before the janitor came and unlocked the doors. The hallways were still dark though so it wasn’t very fun to grab my stuff in my locker when it was pitch black. Overall, I actually found the movie scary, and I rarely find horror movies scary. I think it’s one of the few that’s actually stuck with me. Still disappointed over that lackluster ending, though. Like, I wish the cop guy just closed his eyes or exited the building when he saw that the MC was about to sudoku herself. Overall, it was a very fun night! I graduated a few months ago and I’m going to move away for law school tomorrow. I’m gonna miss my friends.

BUT IM NOT CRAZY. Movies like this and It Follows disturb me more than other types of horror films. With the movie It Follows, it was so unsettling how that thing would just follow people by walking at a normal pace and showing zero emotion or speaking as well as take the appearance of any random person (but often people closely associated with their target). That’s why I’m glad they chose to have the people smile without any CGI for this movie. The fact that it’s just them smiling in a really eerie manner makes the movie so much more unsettling compared to if they gave them an exaggerated smile using CGI the way they did for that god awful movie Dylan has reacted to before called Truth or Dare (with Lucy Hale).

that's a much more generous way of looking at it than how I saw it, it feels like if that were the message then then victims would actually have agency to decide not to instead of a full on possession, and plus I feel like Rose taking a possessed toaster bath at the end there kinda ruins that message and is doubling down that there is no other option

@wiiink Fair assessment. I think passing the trauma/demon from yourself to an unrelated party through deleting their loved one rather than yourself as a way to exempt yourself from forced self-deletion is a pretty messed up twist in this message, too. Like.... that's the only way to save yourself? That guy in prison certainly wasn't saved. He's carrying that trauma forever PLUS he wrecked his life PLUS he perpetuated the curse..... and she walked away from that interaction thinking that this would be a favorable option for even a moment?

sosie bacon’s performance carries this movie. her acting in this as she’s slowly losing her mind makes me uncomfortable which is exactly how horror should make you feel but unfortunately the movie cuts itself off whenever it really gets into these moments in favor of a quick scare that sure will get you in the moment but it won’t stick with you afterwards. any movie regardless of genre should leave the theater with you.

Hi! A professional in the mental health field here: Staff-patient confidentiality is super important, and something that is taken very seriously. HOWEVER, we are required to notify the proper people if we believe that the patient is going to be a danger to themselves or others. This is something that is regularly disclosed to someone throughout treatment. In the U.S., there is a section of HIPAA that protects your identifiable health information for up to 50 years after your death. However, this confidentiality can also be breached pre or post-mortem if it’s due to a court order and/or requested by public health authorities.

Pink used to be theorized to calm aggression (being the weaker sibling of red) in color theory and for years was used in psych wards and even drunk tanks and the like before the link was disproven. It makes sense that the sister would also be pink; she tries to appear happy and bright but she seems pretty unhappy in actuality, and as a psychiatrist, it would probably be endlessly annoying to Rose (blue roses represent mystery and secrets, also pride).

Traumatized people rarely think clearly when they have an episode. Being a therapist doesn’t change anything about being a vulnerable human. It’s not like she could stop and self-analyze and self-diagnose on the spot. All therapists and psychiatrists are taught to never do that and to seek help from another professional instead(which she did. but just going to therapy won’t erase the trauma; it just gives you tools to cope to minimize symptoms). Idk if it’s Dylan’s condescending humor but it annoyed me a lot this time, how he reacted to the main character’s trauma responses and her dealing with her childhood trauma as a kid. And I’m not a new subscriber whatsoever so idk what’s all the excuses in the comments saying that it’s only new subscribers who don’t get his jokes. To me his comments in this specific video were sometimes tone-deaf. The movie is about dealing with trauma and not being able to escape it in the end. Nothing really fun and goofy about it. You still can laugh as a method of coping but the jokes could’ve been more tasteful.

Everyone thought the chick who cut her face off in the beginning was going to be a main character because of how they did their marketing….she was not. The reason why horror is my favorite genre, is because you need to put in genuine effort to writing the characters and plot of a horror film. Which of course, you need to put in effort for any movie. But with horror there's a layer to that. When a horror film uses jump scares as a crutch, you laugh off the danger. You aren't being scared by what's on screen, but the loud BANG that comes with the scare. But when horror is written well, you can explore the inner workings of the mind...and through that...a mirror can be malicious, a phone call can be petrifying, a handshake can be horrifying, a door can be devastating and dangerous, a home can be haunting, and a smile...can be sinister. And images can be ingrained in your head for days.

@@deadpoolynoodle3651 it has it's problems, but Smile is a good enough time for me that I can overlook those issues. The only flaw is as Dylan said, we just didn't know enough about Rose, but I think that's also on purpose. When you put walls up you essentially wear a mask. I did it all the time last year to the point I didn't know what was a real emotion from me or not. It started to scare me so I got help. Rose didn't get help for her trauma and thus it festered. I think the director purposefully left plotlines unresolved, again as a way to reflect on how these things in real life often don't get any closure. Just...oh well you experienced something traumatic that sucks okay moving on.

I kinda like how the movie was using the monster as an allegory for mental illness, but I feel like it didn't know what it wanted to say about it. Like it feels like it's saying that if you're traumatized you should lock those feelings away and not let anyone near you or otherwise you'll be spreading your trauma?? Like for the whole movie she's ignored and pushed away by other people and pushes other people away in turn, and is punished whenever she tries turning to others for help. If going to her old home and talking to her fake mom had given her some closure as a way of saying "theres no cure for trauma but best you can do is learn to recognize it and live with it" and then has to coexist with the monster then it would have been okay but they just decided to have her delete herself from life which isn't an okay way to handle a topic like this

About the demon thing- it depends on how its done. There's this idea that the demon's goal is to terrorize you, so its not that the demon HAS to break in, but the demon might do it to scare you and mess with you and make you start to "go crazy." Or, if its still possessing a person, the possessed person could be the one breaking in.

The demon in this movie feeds on trauma and suffering, then, when the host reached its peak in terms of stress, and panic, and desperation, the demon absorbs it to get stronger - and then moves onto another traumatized host to make them spiral next. Dylan, I don't even mean this jokingly. Nobody can replace you! You're movie commentaries are the best on KZbin because you're not just extremely funny but also know your stuff. Do you really think anybody else teaches us about camera angles or screen layouts??? I'm not just having the best time watching your videos, but I am also learning something. So, just become a director because I think you would be hella good at it.

Lesson learned from Dylan if you don’t want to get scared while watching a horror movie get really mad about getting scammed out of two dollars and you will be focusing on the whole time 😂

my main issue with this movie is it feels very first draft studio pitch where you have to present your idea in a very basic bare bones way so that the studio can get a sense of what you’re trying to make without being put off by having everything too planned out to the point where they fear you’ll push back at their requests for the project. they made the basic idea of “psychiatrist with trauma from her mom killing herself gets tormented by spirit trying to make her kill herself” but then forgot to flesh it out enough to make you actually care about the characters and make them feel like real people. they could’ve done so much more with the relationships and personalities of characters and seemingly just forgot to make you actually care about these people and if they live, die, or leave each other’s lives. I do think rose slowly losing it is done really well (thanks mostly in part to the actress) but I think they needed to focus a little more on characters a little less on plot (less importantly I also think not showing her mom’s death in the beginning and instead having the characters subtly bring it up would be a much better way to show them starting to question her sanity. it seems more like it’s coming from genuine concern from the characters instead of the sake of calling back to the opening)

no one is reading this but I think a movie with a pretty similar basic idea (female protagonist slowly getting possessed by spirits trying to kill them while also dealing with the grief/trauma of losing her mom) but done exponentially better is talk to me and one of the main reasons is the characters. they all feel so real it makes you care so much more about what’s happening to them.

I really liked this movie honestly, was one of the best I’ve seen in awhile in theaters. While I do wish they made some changes and fleshed out the characters more, it was a smaller movie with not a lot of funding and didn’t get traction until they sent actors out into a baseball game and had them stand and smile into the cameras the whole time.

@@cs.a.745 They felt incredibly real, that's why SPOILERS the scenes with her best friend's brother trying to kill himself are so disturbing, particularly the first instance of it happening. It's a group of teenagers who were having a good time doing something stupid together suddenly in a horrific situation. And what do you mean, the movie didn't have an ending? Mia threw herself into traffic instead of Riley, dying in the process. She sees Riley recover and her Dad either recover or pass on, with time passing by quickly for her due to being a spirit. She is now attached to the hand and seen by those playing the game, just like she did. They didn't outright spell it out what happened, but they didn't need to.

I haven't seen it but based on this video It looks like a solid, nothing too far fetched but well executed horror film with a few good scares. The demon feeding off of trauma was actually really smart, it flows really well into horror imo. I would love if they made a sequel starting off like the same night as the ending where Joel knows he's on a timer here and starts desperately trying to figure it out how to save himself and break the chain. He retraces Rose's steps from when she spoke withe the prisoner trying to figure out what happened. He talks to her fiancé who is ofc no help, then he speaks to her sister (being smart about it and just coming from the "I cared for her and I miss her too" angle) and eventually she opens up about the past and their mother etc. Then he speaks to her therapist and (after pressing and begging) she finally divulges the last conversation she had with Rose. All the while he never outwardly expresses that he thinks what happened to her will happen to him even though he is being haunted and knows it will happen soon. He promises Rose he will figure this out in her honor and break the chain. Then we go into his past trauma whatever that is and because he's know therapy didn't help Rose, desperate, he goes to a hypnotist where he sees the demon again and freaks out the hypnotist Burt once he wakes up the hypnotist is smiling wide and he jumps but he's just pleased to announce that he discovered a hidden trauma that Joel had forgotten about. One night he is thinking about Rose, staring into the bathroom mirror at himself and he starts to smile really wide - he snaps out of it. Yadda yada idk eventually he has a final boss battle with the Rose demon and kills her but in the process he is arrested and spends like 6 months in jail but he does not care at all because he is free of the demon. Epilogue: He gets out of prison and goes to Rose's grave. A girl is visiting her grandmother and they chat. She asks him out for coffee and before they leave, she says "has anyone ever told you you have a really nice smile"? "Uh, no, I don't think anyone has. Thank you." He gulps. The end. Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk. 🙏
