I wish they would release all the epics of the 50’s & 60’s in the smilebox format.

I had hoped these 70mm Cinerama films would have been released in smilebox on bluray.

I think that the smilebox system insn't relevant for 70mm films, as they were not shot with a wide enough shooting angle, and don't provide the Cinerama effect. It works only for real 3 strips Cinerama films, which had a 146° wide shooting angle. I have not found any imformations about what was the Ultra Panvision 70 shooting angle, but it was probably no more than 90° ! I remember how much I had bee disappointed the first time I saw an Ultra Panavision 70 film, this was "The fall of the roman empire" at the Paris Empire Cinerama theater. The wide curved sreen was still there but the Cinerama effect had disappeared...

I have it on Blue Ray in 70MM but a Smilebox version would be neat as I have all the restored CINERAMA SmileBox films which I view via a cinema quality vp on a current 8ft wide movie screen.

Robert Shaw makes this movie outstanding. George Montgomery has a small but excellent role. Henry Fonda is obnoxious as the guy who’s ALWAYS in the right place at the right time through a series of unlikely coincidences. He virtually wins the battle for the Allies single handed.

This is a strange one. I've seen plenty of smileboxed trailers, but this is the first that looks completely unconvincing.

Cinerama had to abandon their 3 camera process because it was costly and had serious limitations. In order to remain a viable competitor they had to switch to a format that allowed greater flexibility. Although not truly replicating the original process it was part of film history and should be preserved.

It’s not Cinerama.
@narabdela3 жыл бұрын
@@jimcrawford5039 True. It's Ultra Panavision-70 with a Cinerama logo. I think the problem here is that they've 'Smileboxed' a flat print, rather than one of the rectified prints intended for showing on a curved screen.

"How The West Was Won" remains to be the only CINERAMA movie done 100% correctly for DVD & restored correctly without noticing the 3 camera split. This preview though looks pretty good on this film. Now if they would do the entire movie restored losing all the split camera images. The SmileBox idea is pretty good and some of it is nice, but some of their restores needs to be flat and restored fully losing the image of the split cameras which SmileBox hasn't been able to do this like with "How The West Was Won" was restored perfectly & beautifully.

How The West Was Won was the last film made using the original 3 strip process. It had serious limitations for conventional story telling. It was expensive to produce and exhibit. The switch to 70mm projection was a necessary move. It wasn’t true “Cinerama” but it was a part of Cinerama history and it would be great if these films were offered in smilebox format as HTWWW was. There are two films presented in Cinerama and shot on 70mm that are currently available in smilebox on bluray. Holiday In Spain, and The Golden Head.

How the west was Won is the only action movie made in Cinerama, apart from world of Grimm.
