A big part of the appeal of the show is how 3 dimensional the characters subtlety are. Charlie is a apathetic slacker, but still has basic empathy and care for his friends like an actual person and responds accordingly. Same with Pim. He's the naive optimistic Spongebob esc. archetype but we still see him get frustrated or jealous when pushed too far. The characters are more than just their tropes which is refreshing compared to a lot of adult animation where every character will be flanderized to one or two reactions unless a "Very Special Episode" is run ala Family Guy.
