A lot of people seem to be complaining on how Cthulhu isn’t a ‘god’ kind of like Mulan but I can say these things 1) He does has a pantheon called Lovecraft the pantheon has more than just him, it has his entire family 2)Made in 1928 so he just wasn’t made recently, he just hasn’t been talked about till now cause of the memes So while he isn’t a proper ‘god’ he has a whole story and pantheon for his family I don’t know how true all of this is (found this on Wikipedia) but him having a pantheon alone could be part of the reason why they are adding him and in that pantheon he is basically considered a ‘god’ by the cults.

The main difference is the fact that all religions and myths in smite are ancient so he doesn't fit at all. I believe the less ancient pantheon is the arthurian one but its still very old compared to hp lovecraft's stories. Also they need to keep adding gods to pantheons that are already in-game instead of expanding with new ones and then not adding more gods to them.

Don't be naive. There's a cult to everything nowadays. This doesn't legitimize them or make them of incredible cultural and historical significance. Every other pantheon, even Voodoo, has ancient roots, whereas Cthulhu is the creation of Lovecraft, a very introverted and, at times, disturbed man. Not saying it wouldn't be a cool addition, it just wouldn't fit. Then again lets see what happens, maybe we'll get Goku or the great lord Sauron next!

Im a major lovecraft nerd and while I would absolutely LOVE for Cthulhu to be in the game I think its a lot more likely that it is Kanaloa since he’s part of an existing pantheon, which is also a real pantheon as lovecraft mythos isnt a proper mythological religion, and Kanaloa shares a lot of similarities with Cthulhu and I believe that every piece of evidence that has been displayed can also apply to him. I pray that Im wrong and if it is in fact cthulhu I will jump with joy but sadly I find it incredibly unlikely.

But you must realize, they're idolized legends. People pass down the Legend of King Arthur and Merlin, as a feat of bravery and the such. Mulan is the same way, people idolize her as a strong female and want to be like her. Cthulu on the other hand... Isn't a legend. He was created in 1928. That is extremely modern by mythology standards. Cthulu also is supposed to inspire fear. Put him in a game with a health bar and mana, he loses all of that credibility. You have to understand that Arthur and Merlin are actually at this point roughly a thousand years old, and they derive from older British and Welsh myth, they are far older than you realise and most likely stem from gods but we're syncretised to heroes as Christianity (bleh) steamrolled through Europe. Cthulu on the other is the result of the mind of a man who is still barely out of living memory (heck, couild even say he is living memory), that is not mythology, or legend, or anything deific.

So as much as I would love to have Cthulhu, Typhon is the most likely candidate, he is a titanic sea monster (ult), that breaths fire (“red stance”) and is supposed to be the replacement for Zeus. (Destroyer god). Also the little character teaser thing with the conch shell also is depicted with Greek pillars. However typhon doesn’t own his own city. I'm pretty sure its Cthulhu based of smites more recent posts. If you look at the skin releases for hercules and some other one (I cant recall it) certain letters in the post have a strange font applied to them, it spells at the words "help me" and "these dreams". Lorewise Cthulhu speaks to humans in their dreams to convince to join his cult and eventually awaken him. Hi-rez also had two posts they deleted within the hour they were posted that were strange photos with the description "abandon your gods" and "commit your heart's to his unfathomable power"

I have a lot of thoughts on this: 1. This is Cthulhu. I don't foresee any other gods (though there's so many around the world) that apply "torment" or "insanity" like Cthulhu does throughout its lore while also fitting the design choices here. Hitting him in ult may work similar to, like in the story, "coming in contact" with this being incites madness. The whole point of Cthulhu is that he is incomprehensible to mortals, and thus drives them to insanity with a single glance. We're not supposed to be able to see or understand what Cthulhu really is. 2. The Map tracker does sound like a ward--LoL has a similar system for a character called Fiddlesticks, who can place effigies of himself that, when spotted by an enemy, will perform actions (blink away, ult, run away, etc.) while also acting as a sentry ward. This could be that? The tracker itself could also be a reference to the story. In it, researchers come across "idols" that are sculpted, supposedly, in Cthulhu's likeness that people perform rituals and sacrifices over. Maybe they take a slot and are purchasable, like Baron's Brew? Would be interesting. Ability 2 could also be this idol or something similar, spawned by Cthulhu. 3. The abilities are going to be really interesting, because we have no idea what Cthulhu, really, is capable of in the lore, aside from his ability to call on the other beings. Cthulhu, if you're not familiar (and I don't want to really mansplain this) is essentially a gatekeeper. When it gets up, it will open a portal for all the other things (nyarlathotep, dagon, etc) to come rolling through into Earth and destroy our world. Aside from that, we know squat. This is speculation, and I have absolutely no basis for this, that his attacks might come from audio cues, like Artio 2 in bear stance. Any contact with it creates madness. His passive might work like a mystical mail proc--who knows. 4. Ult confirms my suspicions (I wrote this reading the datamining and after watching.) Looking at Cthulhu will apply madness quicker--this is pretty staunch evidence. What Duke said also makes sense. Cthulhu just doesn't "wake up"--something has to happen to call it. In the story, (spoilers coming if you want to read it) sailors wind up on an island with "non-euclidian geometry" and open a door. Cthulhu then bursts out and several sailors die. The whole point of that is that because the door was opened, squiddy comes running. I think the same principle is here--Cthulhu's true power coming from "channeling" or a ritual, which, since it's now unbridled, can augment its other abilities. 5. Very excited. Very big boi. So my reasoning for Charybdis is that it could be his stance change is becoming a literal moving whirlpool. Growing 3 times his size as he whirlpools around the battlefield. Would explain his projectiles becoming close range when he’s a literal pool of water. Also the torment when touching him makes more sense if his body could pass under you.

datamining usually gets hints of whats actually right, so i expect there is an evolution type mechanic, probably something about doing dmg or getting kills/assists, could even be levels. i expect that along with gaining some sorta stats, health and power maybe, his abilities will evolve and gain additional projectiles and mechanics.
