SMITE Thanatos Guide (Season 9)

I just returned to Smite after 3 years. Thank you for helping me getting back to Smite and also teaching me how to play one of my favorite gods again :D That 3rd ability demonstration felt like watching Mythbusters....I have always thought just WHEN does the scythe hit and if I could use this knowledge on other character such as Chang'e. Feels good to be back :)

I actually do not level up my ult whenever I can. Because if I see that I'll reach next level before the ult is up again, then I can level up something else first

Btw I spend already over 30 hours in jungle training mode just with Thanatos to exercise hitting his 1. Also like in 180° flick etc. I already do like trickshots with 360° 1, 360° autoattacks and 360° ult. It's always satisfying

I’m getting back into smite after a few months and I usually use Thanatos or Mercury.I usually play arena and joust. What is the best build I could use for them?

Thanatos is pretty simple but flexible. I'd go Bluestone > Jotunn's > Hydra's > Crusher > Bloodforge > Titan's Bane. You can probably go Warrior's Axe over bluestone if you feel like you get blown up early too much, and if you straight up need defense Spirit Robe just got buffed so you could replace Crusher with that. Merc basically has one build but im struggling to come up with a starter item in those modes. So instead maybe Tier 2 Golden Blade > Golden Blade > Rage > Deathbringer > Wind Demon > Serrated Edge > Silverbranch/Bloodforge (Silverbranch for more shred, bloodforge for more damage on squishies) In arena you 100% want Rage, but in Joust you may want to swap that for Shadowsteel Shuriken. And if you REALLLY want to do a starter item uhh... Leather Cowl maybe?

​@@boybeasty7569you can go Crit Thanatos as well. Just build Crit, Penetration, attack speed and Bloodforge and you will have spicy 1000+ crits

Generally Thanatos is gonna be super aggressive, you cant really fight him early and if you DO take the risk in fighting him and lose it's really bad. So just chill early on and respect his damage. However most good junglers catch up to his damage by your first item. So in the early game try to match his rotations and stop him from ganking people, that's the best you can do. Then, typically, once you have an item, you can actively try to fight him with your teammates, you don't want to fight him 1v1. Of course, you want to prioritize dodging his first ability. If he hits you with his first ability, run, he won the trade already and is just gonna chase you down. Really as an overarching idea you want to just stop the Thanatos from getting fed early, and then let the game come back to you once the midgame starts and you're actually able to start matching his damage. Over aggression is something to look out for too. Some Thana players are so desperate for early kills they dive as deep as they can, so while you want to respect his early damage, if he for instance misses his scythe or lands his scythe on your tank, jump him, so long as he doesn't hit his scythe on a squishy, he's a free kill. Another over arching thing is his slow immunity. If your team has a lot of slows instead of hard cc you're in trouble, since he can just use his 2 to completely ignore the slows. So if you're drafting and you see a Thana, avoid picking gods who focus on slowing targets and focus more on gods with hard lockdown. Hope that helps!
