Smith and Wesson hammer lock disabled

Just a quick video about how I eliminated the possibility of the lock accidentally engaging on Smith and Wesson 44 magnum.
On a sidenote I forgot to mention that the rubber presentation grips on the gun are actually made for the square butt revolvers but can easily be adapted to work with the round butt. If anyone is interested in how just leave a comment and I’ll be happy to tell you.

You can also purchase a kit that removes the lock and fills in the hole.

Thanks. I know about those. The prob with them is there is then the extra area where the flag is removed next to the hammer.

My 629 locked up while at the range. It does happen.

Ive had a lock fail on both a Rossi 351 and a S&W 36. Trust me, they fail. Maybe not often. But if you are trusting your life to it do you really wanna play with fate like that?

Hence the disabling of the mechanism. Others have said they’ve had the lock engage itself so I do believe it can happen.

I can assure you, my 329PD locked up at the range. Not only that, I cannot unlock it with the key. It happened while shooting and it's really annoying. If it would have been a defense situation, the gun locked up after the 3rd shot.

Yes that could’ve certainly been bad. The most problematic Smith & Wesson revolver I ever had was a 325PD. Just like yours but in 45 ACP. I never had issues with the lock but with certain ammo the projectiles would unseat from the casings and make the cylinder unable to turn if they came out too far. Did you remove the lock on your 329PD?

@@bripro68 No, not yet. I'm researching how to do that and deciding if I should give it a try. I'm NOT a gunsmith by any means. There are some good videos on KZbin that I could probably follow. My 329PD hasn't been shootable since it locked up. It's also my backcountry gun I take backpacking here in Idaho.

@@thesteveotoole Sounds like you don’t have much to lose. I suggest researching it until you cant bare to hear or see any more info about it then taking pictures at every step for reference should you need them.

My 686 starting locking up. It does happen. Too many similar stories are out there. Even if it only happens in one out of every 100 guns, do YOU want to be that one guy?

@@bripro68 I just verified that the lock was the cause of the problem an hour ago. You can bet I'm ordering the kit with the replacement plug. The lock was absolutely the culprit.

Yes, the lock will engage by itself. I had it happen on a 642. Luckily, range firing. Now there isn't a lock on it.

Others have told me it has happened to them as well so I believe it. Luckily problem solved on my firearm.

That blows. For all the hype about the new ones not being as good as the old ones I don’t know if I believe that either though. I think there’s a sweet spot somewhere in the middle.
