Cool. I had some manual typewriters but never had the funds to get one of these printwheel models. I finally got a daisy wheel printer but it was connected to an Atari 1040ST.

The main purpose I found your video was to find out HOW TO OPEN UP THE TYPEWRITER SO I CAN REPLACE THE INK. But you just assume that everybody knows that and just opens yours up without one word on how to do it. (I haven't used it for over 10 years, but found myself needing it again.) Bless have some consideration for people who need to be reminded of the basics. Like all those books out for "Dummies".

Any tips for the H series (5600) the ink ribbon doesn’t advance on one i picked up today? What is the red lever on the right of the carriage?

Red lever tightens the correction cartridge as demonstrated in video Ribbon could be bad, try turning manually to see if it advances Typewriter could also be broken, see if ribbon drive shaft is turning while typing

@ it isn’t turning so i think it is the solenoid or the board. I repair and restore Pinball machines so i take it a part and see if i can see any shorts or bad capacitors/transistors. Unfortunately, I don’t know what coil drives the grabber claw for a replacement but maybe another H series would come into my garage adventure for parts. I am trying to fix it for my son who is 10 with special needs he wants to type on a typewriter. I like fixing stuff.

@@phoenixtypewriter2136 am I correct it thinking the little “y” fork that holds the grabbing claw needs to move down towards the keyboard? 2 Also, so that red leveler on the bottom of the carriage cart is also for correction tape? Unfortunately i am in Texas otherwise i would drop it off with u. Not sure the shipping is worth it as they easily come up Regularly at thrift stores.

@@matthew2000tx Circuit boards never have hammer driver failure, wire harness sometimes, different models use different hammer mechanisms, some incorporate the hammer solenoid with the ribbon drive from the bottom

@ this one i think has ribbon drive from the bottom there are two yellow wires going to coil of magnetic wire that is under the right side of the cartridge holder and it appears to drive the little grabber that should be pulling the wheel that turns the cartridge ribbon.

Mate I got a smith XL2900 (family had it for a long time) and always get annoyed with the correction tape getting loose. First off I’m jealous how yours is better than mine XD Second, thanks for showing clearly how to tighten it when in the type writer.

Hi Duane -- I just replaced the correction cartridge on my SL460. It did have the cheap one you showed in the beginning, and I replaced it with a genuine Smith-Corona cartridge, but now the Caps Lock light is flashing and the machine will not function. When I re-install the cheap generic cartridge then it works again. For the life of me I cannot figure out WHY! Any thoughts?

There is a sensor/switch right below the correction cartridge 2:56 (black plastic w/small silver metal) that needs to be pushed down that is what the rocking part on the generic ribbons engage, the OEM ribbon has a small plastic piece that protrudes from bottom light flashes when there is no ribbon in typewriter ( or thinks there is no ribbon )

Is the shipping lock removed ? How is the carrier jammed ? An obstruction ? I can't tell much without looking at typewriter. Did it ever work ? Flashing LED is an error code, basically telling you something is wrong......

@@phoenixtypewriter2136 I don't know where the shipping lock is. And yes, it worked. I had it for 2 days, the print started fading. I removed the cartridge, put it back and the carrier slid all the way over to the right side and got stuck, making that wretched grinding noise like in one of the videos. I saw where you had an obstruction, causing the problem with the carrier. But you were still able to move it manually. Mine won't move at all. I don't think that there's any obstruction.

Scratch that. I fixed it. The lever locking the carrier in place was locked. I'm thrilled beyond belief. Just waiting for the correction ribbon

I don't know what you mean by "assemble ribbon" , these are sealed cartridges Are you talking about 2 spool correction lift off tape, (ribbon ) ? Email us with pictures or call us

Hi Phoenix Typewriter. Thanks for your great posting. I followed all your instructions and installed the correction cartridge and ribbon, everything clicked into place. For some reason the ribbon won't advance. Is this anything you have experience with? Thanks for your help.

Yes, could be a couple reasons ribbon won't turn. 1st check that new ribbon is turning manually by sticking a phillip head screwdriver in the turnstile on bottom of ribbon & turn & see if it's moving. Depending on which SCM model you have, ribbon drive could be broken. One model use's a fishing line type drive & other has a metal c-clip breaks & that causes drive not to engage. Either of those would require an expert to fix.

Great video! Really helped us learn how to replace ribbons. Question... The caps lock key on our machine does not light up when pressed. Any idea if this is fixable? If so, got any suggestions for us to look for resource info? ( bulb replacement, wiring issue, etc)?

LED is good, but uses a small rubber piece to push contacts points together. That rubber piece had deteriorated like an old rubber band KB would have to be removed, completely disassembled, cleaned and rubber contact pad replaced, done this job 100's of times

If you have trouble finding the printed cassette, my suggestion is to refill the cassette roll from another brand, as long as it's the same size

Some SCM's have a ribbon sensor, if no ribbon is in typewriter or wrong (non OEM ) ribbon is installed shift lock light will flash, also if lid is open or lid sensor is malfunctioning light will flash.

Hey there, i had question,i have a smith corona sl470 and i have in it one of these cartridges like the one you have in the video, this is kinda complicated so bear with me,i pulled the typewriter out tonight after a few years in the closet and i pulled the cartridge out since i figured i would buy a new one. When i pulled the cartridge out i noticed there was a waded up piece of paper under the cartridge, well i remembered that i have to have it there for the thing to work,basically without a piece of paper under the cartridge the lock button will blink and the typewriter wont work, the wadded up piece of paper pushes the sensors down so the machine will be tricked into thinking the sensor is down and operates properly,whats the problem here? My machine uses a cartridge and a second smaller cartridge for the eraser (corrector) while searching online i ran into a generic cartridge that has 2 "fingers" for lack of a a better word that would push the sensors down (my machine actually has 2 sensors) and would work fine but when i type in SL470 Cartridge on the net it mainly shows the one i have now and you show here, I'm completely confused,do i have the wrong cartridge or whats the deal? in really simple terms the cartridge i have now doesn't have anything that pushes down on the sensors so i have to make me a little ball of paper and put it against the sensor before i press the cartridge in,then the machine works like a charm!! thank you so much for any input you might have.

The H series cartridge ribbon is disposable one time ribbon only Replace with new ribbon, throw away old.
