Thanks Brian. I have three Rossi R92's - 357 Mag rifle 24", 45 Colt carbine 20" and 44 Mag carbine 16" - love em = they are super reliable, smooth actions and very accurate. I've replaced all of the followers with stainless steel ones and also the flip safeties with buttons or an aperture sight from Stevesgunz.

I used to own a nice collection of Winchester and Marlin lever action carbines. Sadly, I had to let them go in a down financial period. Divorce can be hard... So when wanting to gear up for cowboy action again, I had to make the most of my $$ and that's what drove me to try the Rossi R92 - my first was the 20" 45 Colt to match a pair of Cimarron Frontier Six shooters in the same chambering. And based on that first one, I decided to get the others. I really do like them.

Greetings from south central BC, thanks for the review. As I'm about Brian's age, I'll admit bias after a lifetime of more traditional lever gun setups - mostly Winchester but some Marlin. The mag tube setup on the S&W seems to have all sorts of potential for safety and function issues for sure. As well my experience with MIM parts hasn't been great so we'll see there as well. Keep up the great content and all the best to you all down south of us.

Thanks for the comment! I certainly agree...I prefer Marlins and Winchesters. We will see how these hold up
@mouthbreather280Ай бұрын
Completely moot point about the safety aspect when unloading from the end of the magazine tube. All you have to do is open the action, taking the round from the chamber and proceeding. It would be impossible to shoot yourself.

Im looking forward to your comparison of Marlin, Henry to the S&W. Im not excited about the S&W, for one thing, the price compared to Marlin or Henry, the mag tube, not thrilled about MIM parts, especially at that price point. Thanks for the snapshot!

For the MSRP price point they're at with MIM parts, no thanks, I'll go with the tried and true Marlin/Ruger. Ruger made improvements on the Marlin by getting rid of that micro-grove silliness. In defense of S&W mag tube unloading... from what I can see, that's not any different from the Henry rifles and their tube magazine. I always made it a practice to lever the action open, which ejected the cambered round is ejected, and then unscrew the magazine tube. Looking forward to both a detailed review and possibly a long term review on how the MIM parts are holding up.

Thank you and I'm looking forward to more on lever guns as I want to make an educated choice. Do Ruger/Marlin and Henry also use MIM parts? Ruger sand cast?
@PearceBrothersGearGuide4 ай бұрын
No MIM parts on Ruger/Marlin or Henry! I will be discussing this in much greater detail when I do a comparison between Marlin, Henry and S&W. Thanks for the comments and for taking the time to watch.

I think forged steel receivers and internal fire control components are superior. THANK'S Brian, I was not aware of the manufacturing process with the S&W gun.

Being a left hander I tend to prefer the Winchester top eject design. I never have gotten used to cartridge ejection crossing my face on all automatic or Marlin style designs.

I am excited to see your full review. I am glad that more lever actions are coming out. I agree with your opinion on mim parts some places they aren't bad but others could pose a potential problem. One thing I would like to see would be a steel butt plate instead of the rubber.

What do you recommend as a better (less MiM) product? Rossi, Chiappa... winchester (miroku)?
@robertdunbar58546 күн бұрын
@joellaurin9007 The quality of the Miroku Winchesters are superior to everything else on the market. I believe they are even better than the original Winchesters and thats saying alot. I have over 100 year old Winchesters that still bring home the groceries.
@joellaurin90076 күн бұрын
@@robertdunbar5854 I do like the Miroku's but just can't get over the tang safety. Now, anything browning Miroku I'm all in. In fact I'm buying a 1886 Browning SRC in 45-70 just waiting for the paperwork. Was thinking of a cheap Rossi in 44mag or 357mag. If I could find a Browning in 44mag that would be even sweeter!

Apparently, there is no real reason for this to exist since it doesn't seem to offer an improvement over the Marlin/Henry/Winchester other than the name. (The words "Smith and Wesson" stamped on the barrel will undoubtedly help sell it but...) I have always liked Brian's straight-talking honesty in his writing and it is appreciated here as well.

Brian Randy here, Would you please explain the difference between a Carbine and a Short Rifle to Van Zwoll? His article in the last magazine on this gun had some in accuracies like calling the ones like you have there Carbines when it is obvious that they are Short Rifles. Good to see you and the boys on You Tube. Randy

Hi Randy, I better let you drop a note to Wolfe explaining the difference between a rifle and carbine! Thanks for commenting.

@@PearceBrothersGearGuide I got it from you? But so everybody can understand what we are talking about here,,, it goes like this,,, and it ain't that hard. With Leverguns, if the barrel is shorter than 22"and the Fore End has a" Barrel Band" it is a "Carbine." If the Fore End has an "End Cap" and no Barrel Band, It is a Short Rifle. (like the S&W ones you tested.) If the Barrel is longer than 22" it is a "Rifle" whether it has a Barrel Band or Fore End Cap. I have 3 Marlin Rifles. A 336, .30-30 made in 1958 with a 20" round bbl. It has no Barrel Band. It is a "Short Rifle" I have an 1894 CB (Octagon Bbl.).44 Spec/Mag it has a Fore End Cap and a 24" Bbl. It is a Rifle. I have an 1895 CB (Octagon Bbl.) in .45-70 with a 26" Bbl. It is a "Rifle." I once had an Early 1895 .45-70, with a Round 24" Bbl. and a Barrel Band, it was also a "Rifle." The Ruger made 1894 you tested for Rifle Mag was a "Carbine." All of those guns I have seen have Barrel Bands I will Email Wolfe about this fine point.

@PearceBrothersGearGuide4 ай бұрын
I bought several canvas belts from a small maker years a ago....but they are out of business. I don't know who is currently making webb/canvas belts. El Paso Saddlery offers them, but they are too wide for the belt loop on most holsters. If I can find another maker, I will get back with you. Thanks for watching.

I would bet anything. That S&W is in bed with Rossi on this 1854 Rifle and Rossi is building it for S&W or S&W is Using Rossi Tooling to build it themselves. S&W did not create all this tooling to make this one design rifle .
