Smith & Wesson M&P 15-22 Cleaning

I recently picked up this MP 15 22 used and it was pretty dirty. In this video, I do a complete cleaning. I spent a little more time on the bolt as you will see in the video. A disassembly of it. If you have any questions, please put them in the comments and I'll try to answer in a timely manner.

I use a paperclip for the area around the chamber, and then air in a can to blow it out, then those ear cleaning sticks for the small places around the chamber.

Hey just picked my up one a week ago and am wondering is it necessary to take apart the extractor and firing pin when cleaning? If so about how many shots? 1k rounds more,less...?

@OneEyedJoel I would say, that if you pick up anything used you should take it down 100 percent to clean it, at least the first time. If it's brand new, I'd do the same to get all the preservation oil off it. 22 has a tenancy to be pretty dirty, so I'd say take it apart every time you clean it. Others may disagree, but that's what I do. Hope this helps.. Rock on Joel!

Dear JDP, Thank you for making such a detailed video including the bolt disassembly/reassembly process. I am curious what sized Roll Pin Punch did you use? Many reviews of this fine rifle mentioned frequent jamming of the action during the extractor/ejector process. There were plenty of owners voicing this exact concern so that I bought the Volquartsen replacement extractor and firing pin for the 15-22 and I verified the ejector was bent properly and aligned for proper function (and since my 15-22 Sport MOE is new, no carbon build-up on the bolt was present to cause a misalignment of the ejector). During the bolt disassembly, change of the extractor and firing pin the reassembly of the rolled spring pin (using a Roll Spring Punch 1/16" as recommended by a different KZbinr. This recommended size punch might need to be a 5/64ths") did not go back into its slot with gentle taps of my GraceUSA brass hammer. The pin was not fully removed, so was already started in the proper alignment for reassembly. The steel of these rolled spring pins can be easily deformed. So, I removed the pin entirely and called Smith&Wesson customer service where an agent named David, researched the exact pin and is sending me a set of four (awesome service sending me these back-ups). The GraceUSA 7-Piece Roll Spring Punch Set RS-7 $29 allows you to remove the pin partly or totally. The GraceUSA Roll Pin Holder Punch Set 5-Piece Steel RSH-5 $29 allows you to start the pin into the slot without crushing the ends of the pin with less likelihood of bending the pin. Many online gun shop sellers of stainless-steel Roll Spring Pins do not state the diameters of various pins, so it is very difficult to find a replacement other than from Smith&Wesson or a gunsmith who knows and stocks the array. I'll measure the diameter of the S&W pin before selecting the correct Roll Pin Holder Punch examining the 1/16th" or 5/64ths" Holder Punch for re-inserting the pin.

I just picked one up, now i grew up with snap caps or drywall anchors for dry firing a 22lr, is the m&p designed in such a way that dry firing is ok even without my extra steps?

It's not a good Idea to dry fire it alot. You can use snap caps, or already fired empty brass.

Also, theres no need to dry fire it, you take it to the range and there you fire it, and if you cock it with no ammo in it then you open the upper and pull the trigger while holding the hammer so no damage is done.

To safely decock the trigger while it’s empty and you’ve double checked that it’s empty, simply pull the charging handle back about 3/4 of the way and pull the trigger. It will decock it then push the charging handle to forward position. Simple and works with any AR style platform.

They get dirty real fast, the barrel too, every 200 rounds it needs cleaning or your grouping is going to suck with every shot.

Allen, This will shoot whatever 22 LR you put in it. CCI, Ruger etc.. Just don't shoot 22 shorts in it.

I have heard that some of them are tight. Maybe you could use a pencil to help push the pins through the plastic receiver?

It always takes longer when trying to film it. If I wasn't filming, it would take me about 30 to 45 minutes. While filming, it took over an hour and a half. For me anyway, the hardest part of creating the video is getting whats in my head to come out of my mouth correctly, even when I have things written down Lol.

Those wipes I use are saturated with CLP. I tend to not oil stuff too much when in storage. I always take Hoppes with me and add a little before shooting.

Hey Steve... No, I didn't forget.. I Just didn't film a lot of it. In my older videos (like this one) I tried to keep them short, so I fast forwarded through most of it, but it starts around 7:50 mark and is really only a few seconds long. Cleaning the lower is the same as a regular AR. I did have a detailed cleaning on one, but the Tub e said it violated their terms so I had to remove it. These days, I just let the videos go even if they are long :D Thanks for watching buddy... Rock on!
