Thank you Jeff for your work in this video of my old home area. Like you I'm a Holmes Street boy born in the front bedroom of number 59 just after the war. As a youngster the street was populated by neighbours who would help each other and held street parties for the kids. At Christmas, the publican of The Albany would put on a party in the upstairs room for the street's kids. I left the street back in the 70's to emigrate to Australia and am saddened to see it looking so scruffy with all that litter lying about.

Yes sadly it has become a scruffy area. To be fair, there were storms just before I made this video and most areas had litter spilled from upturned bins etc, but most people I think would tidy it up. I'm pleased you liked the video, we were obviously neighbours for a short time.

Lovely video Jeff I love looking at videos of Liverpool my grandparents lived there in the late 60s they lived in dove street Upper Parliament in the big flats which have now been demolished i believe

I lived in Liverpool in the mid to late70s and used Smithdown Road daily to get from my place of residence just off Menlove Ave to the city centre and back. As I can see the general view has not changed and I remember well the many old redbrick buildings. As you mention I too remember that the road got more "affluent" at its Southern end as one approached the junction leading onto Menlove Ave.

I wouldn't describe Smithdown rd as even being English anymore, same applies to all areas that border south of our city centre, The old communities have fled due to uncontrolled immigration alongside a student population with no allegiance to the city, the 2 up 2 down terraces are mainly private landlords housing a league of nations, my own area Old Swan is on the brink of being engulfed as Kensington, Wavertree and Tuebrook have hit saturation point with a migrant population being the majority in L6

Yep, lived on Smithdown Road (Mulliner Street from 1980 to 2006). It's completely trashed now due to large numbers of foreign immigration. Back in my day, it was Afro Carribean/African and White in the area. You don't even see that now and that goes to show how run down it has become.

My mum was the Sister of Ward 4 in Sefton General. Her shift started about 5 am so as a single mum she took me in to work with her before school at Dovedale, wher I would roam the halls and wards with impunity. We lived at 42 Rose Brae off Rose Lane. Before that it was 45 Lidderdale Road. That was about 1972/3. Fantastic work mate. I learned a lot. Very grateful. Best pizza I ever had, including those I've had in Italy, I used to get on Smithdown on the right as you go up, just before the big wall of Sefton General. There was a great tandoori place nearby on the right too. I wonder if they are still there.... I left the Pool and England in 2000. Again, I'm grateful for your great work, mate. One last thing. I was in Liverpool for a visit last Summer (I live in Frankfurt now), I got lost in town! Not a big fan of Liverpool One. How many grade 1 listed buildings were pulled down to accomodate that monstrosity? And why was no-one prosecuted for it?????

Jeff, just come across your channel, have subscribed and enjoying the videos. Very nostalgic for someone who has lived in Kent for the past 30 odd years! I lived off Smithdown Road near the Mystery on Fallowfield Road for 4 years until we moved to Eastcote Road, off Brodie Avenue, Garston - coincidentally also in 1960, when I was 6. I can just remember the Grand Cinema on the corner of our road and Smithdown Road and the Corporation Bus Depot behind our house. My brother was also born in Sefton General Hospital in 1959, though I was born in Broadgreen Hospital. Keep the videos coming!

I trained as an S.R.N in 1975-78 at sefton general. I lived in Hartington Rd in walking distance. I loved my time at Sefton and would have stayed there till Iretired. But we were closed and moved to the new royal where I worked as a Staff Nurse on I.T.U. I hated it and left

It was a huge loss dressed up as progress. Hartington Road was a nice road back then, it was our way of getting to Sefton Park when I lived in Holmes Street. Thanks for the comment.

Hi Jeff, I too was born in Sefton general hospital (1964) but I would have more likely been born by the bake beans. I also lived in Holmes street, number 11. We left in 1975, happy memories. My grandma lived at 1, (Robinson) more or less facing you. I think she lived there forever.

Fascinating video. I well remember the ‘Smithdown 10’ pub crawl ending in the huge Brook House, and tottering back afterwards to the Carnatic Halls of Residence in Mossley Hill. Happy student days!

I lived in Cantsfield Street which is now buried underneath the new School, we later moved to Corney Street before the New house's were built accross Smithdown Road facing Holmes Street. Can't believe how many of the Pubs have gone or converted into student accommodation after they banned smoking. The Mulliner is gone and and a few others were burnt down probably to claim on insurance. The same happened on Lawrence Road and Wavertree High Street. Sad to see all the nice neighbours and friendly people have long since gone. You can play spot the white person there now. Maggie Thatcher has a lot to answer for in destroying Liverpool.

Hi Jeff, Do you remember Sefton Park School which was on Smithdown Road just were the Aldi is today, Me and my older brother used to go to that School in the early 1980s. I remember a corner shop close to the School which used to sell broken biscuits. I used to buy a 5p bag of mixed biscuits.

50 odd years ago when I was a lad I lived in Darrel Street. The 1st street right at the top of Smithdown Road. Having moved there from Chatsworth Street. Both gone now. Demolished and turned into Darrel Crescent or something. That building on the corner between Smithdown Road and Earl Road was a bank. Went to Edge Hill boys school which has also been knocked down. All my boyhood has been demolished. Chatsworth Primary is still standing though. Although when I went there it was sooty black. But they sandblasted it so now its brown.

I'm in Capetown now but as a boy I played in the Cemetery. Our greatest adventure would be looking for the oldest grave stone which stood in front of Sefton Gen. were I was born in the mid sixties. It was also the first time I saw a dead body in that hospital. I thought he was a sleep but it appeared he was in an altercation and died. Remember people complaining for not covering him up as he was trollied past and my Ma covering my eyes. From the grave yard we made our way to Sefton park avoiding the Cocky Watchmen along the way. We would visit the roman ruins before visiting Old Nic's cave and all the features that Sefton Park offered. Including fishing for Stickle Backs. Before dark we would make our way back to Webster road have a quick swing on the gantry over the steps of the former cinema which had become a white goods warehouse. I remember It was called the Cameo and our gathering point for Tikes like us. Infact we nicked named ourselves the Cameo Boot Boys lol. I could go on but thankyou Jeff most appreciated.

I would have to get use to the other side of the road vehicle directions compared to here in the USA! Was in London in 1995, January and I loved it.My next trip is to Liverpool to watch the Reds at Anfield and Everton at Goodison Park before it's demolished! Everton is scheduled to play at the new stadium in 2024!

Anfield is having its Anfield Road end extended at the moment and Evertons new stadium is well under way too. Getting tickets for Liverpool matches can be difficult.

I was also born in Sefton General, brought up in Edge Hill and I worked in that Asda for a short while 6 years ago, before retiring, I reckon Asda & Aldi have got a lot to do with the shops closing down, also lived in Greenbank Drive 40 years ago and had one or two bevvies in the Brookhouse ! Went to Lodge Lane baths when i was a kid, when me and the missus went to the big fruit & veg shop on Lodge Lane a few years ago ( as we had heard they sold lots of different stuff quite cheap) i was surprised to see the white tiles still on the wall at the back of where the baths used to be ! but to be honest i didn't feel comfortable around there and the whole area, top end of Smithdown included, is filthy - people just dropping their litter everywhere - apart from in the bins ! the student population must also be guilty of throwing litter everywhere - these are the ones that go on protest marches about pollution etc....! but you're right, its strange that the bottom end of Smithdown is much 'cleaner' than the top, so it has got to be the people to blame, wherever they are from.

Small shops find it difficult to compete with the big stores. It's fine being told to shop local to support small businesses but there's a cost to doing that. I've not really felt uncomfortable around that area but I do get a few strange looks from some because they know they're being filmed. Thanks for the comment.

Lovely video Jeff ....I was born in Sefton general hospital way back in 1949..(on me mum's birthday) 21st April...and she was also born there in 1927...on our Queen Elizabeth's first birthday....we lived in Boyton street at the time (off Earle road)......Jeff why didn't you mention Penny Lane?...it's quite famous ....and you must've passed it on your walk...👍🏻

It's sad how many cinema's this city once had..The handyman's supermarket was a cinema...There was once a cinema were the kwik save used to be,just before the Boundary Also,were the car sales showroom is situated,at the bottom of Fallowfield Road,that was a cinema called The Grand..I'm a massive cinephile and it would have been great to literally walk out my house and a few feet away,there is a cinema There was apparently a cinema on the High Street,i think it was just past the old bullring The original Curly music was located on the block on the left hand side,as you get past the cemetery.. It was called Hog music,but was mostly repairs on instruments You are right about the north end of Smithdown Road..It's an absolute disgrace My nan lived in windsor view in the seventies and eighties,and my Uncle's all drank in the pubs down lodge lane and smithdown road

I lived just off Smithdown Road and my family both sides lived and died in Toxteth. Apart from upper parliament Street it was predominantly white poor working class. My street had cobbles and no trees or gardens. Two up, two down. Some families had boxes as furniture. The poverty in the sixties and seventies was extreme but you could walk anywhere and often did. Having been away and heard about the riots, i would love to go back but too nervous to do it

Very true, very much a poor white area when I was there too. Upper Parliament Street where much of the riots where is now very nice. Princes Road has recently been regenerated at looks much nicer. Smithdown Road is a bit tatty at the top end but not intimidating. Anyway, pleased you watched the video.

Hi I lived in Borrowdale rd I remember a candy shop the second or third along bus stop outside MKE on the corner Modern kitchen Equipement opposit the Mystery park they had the world fair there 1968 and 1969 I was born in sefton general 1960 these memorys bring me back I now live in Spain from 2012 peace from spain thankyou

When we lived there it was late 1950s, but Smithdown was on our bus route to town from Woolton through the 1960s. Back then Smithdown was predominantly white. Black people lived in Upper Parliament Street, Grove Street and Princes Ave. Now there are is a mix of races and cultures throughout that whole area. Seems to be more Muslims on Earle Road than Smithdown Road. That's just a casual observation.
