What's interesting is that it's not an entirely "natural" phenomenon for two young orangutans to do that. What I mean is, in the wild, orangutans are very solitary creatures. Unlike troop-based primates like gorillas and chimps, young orangutans spend almost all their time exclusively with their mothers and, under normal circumstances, would very rarely encounter another orangutan infant to interact with. These little orphans have adapted to care for and comfort each other in a way that would just not take place outside the unique setting of this orphanage/rehab center, and it's adorable.

They don't comfort the playmates (like macaques, capuchins, gibbons, vervets...all monkeys; or like chimps, bonobos, gorillas...all the apes) but they take profit, return: each one tries to be protected by the other. It's not their interest to protect their playmates. Griffith Chung is right, they look for their own personal physical affection, their own personal advantage: they aren't cute !

As an Indonesian myself, I see some comments mentioning how sad it is that orangutans are threatened to be extinct, if you do love these funny cute mammals I really recommend you to stop using palm oil related product since the deforestation in Borneo are mainly caused by massive palm plantations and donate to local Borneo orangutans keeper communities

Yes, and as an Indian I'm sorry because India is one of the biggest consumers of palm oil. I am strictly against a trade that destroys our neighbors ecology. 20 years ago on ABC Radio National (Australia), a research and expert on orangutans told a story. One day he was walking through a clearing in the jungle when he heard an orangutan screaming. He raced into the jungle and quickly found a fire which had encircled a baby. The mother was standing outside the fire, screaming. The researcher found a way in, grabbed the baby, got out of the fire and presented to the mother who snatched it off him, took one look at his eyes, and raced off with the baby. A week later the researcher was walking through the same clearing when the mother, a wild orangutan, came out of the jungle, took him be the hand, and took him into the jungle to a special tree. The tree had leaves regarded as a delicacy, and which the orangutans conserved. The mother took a handful of leaves and gave it to him.
