August 15, 2005: it’s a chilling sight for the two Greek Air Force fighter jets: Helios Flight 522 is filled with unconscious passengers and flight crew, gliding with no pilot. Suddenly, a man is seen entering the cockpit.

For anyone curious- the person in the cockpit was a flight attendant using a portable oxygen supply who saved perhaps hundreds of people. He DID have a commercial pilots license but was not trained on flying any large plane like the boring 737 so he was unable to land the plane. HOWEVER, the turn he made (including after one of the engines cut out and later the other) allowed the plane to crash away from Athens. His bravery made sure there were no ground causalities even though he knew his death was imminent. It must have been agonizing not knowing how the fly the plane or contact ATC.

for anyone unaware, mechanics looked over the plane before the flight to try and sort a problem, but didn't set the pressurisation to automatic so the plane took off, the plane wouldn't pressurise. the pilots didn't work out what the alarms were and didn't put their masks on and fell unconscious as the plane flew on autopilot before running out of fuel. a flight attendant managed to get to the cockpit but couldn't fly the plane and it was too late

Whether he could've flown the plane was irrelevant, by the time he broke down the cockpit door and had brought the plane down to 7000 feet, the fuel was exhausted and both engines flamed out, but his last act was to maneuver the plan away from the cities to ensure no one on the ground was killed

@@ivanamendez478 or could it be because of a reinforced cockpit door? wild guess, as after all this accident is dated after 2001 (after 9/11 event) according to description. it would be extremely hard to take down a cockpit door as shown by germanwings flight 9525 (from the last disaster i remember, this accident involved the captain being locked out of the cockpit and the f/o deliberately crashing the plane) then again that accidents dates back to 2015 so idk

The flight attendants name was Andreas Prodromou, he was 25 and was working as an attendant to pay for his commercial pilots licence. Unfortunately due to rules introduced after 9/11, the cockpit door was re-enforced and locked so it took him hours to break through it. Some people have said he wouldn't have been able to land the plane, but either way, he didn't have the chance. By the time he got into the cockpit and lowered the plane's altitude to around 7,000 (a height where the air is breathable), the fuel was expended and both engines flamed out. Contrary to popular belief, he did indeed speak on the radio, the FDR recorded his many mayday calls, unfortunately, due to the pilots being knocked out so soon into the flight, the radio was still tuned to the original ATC, which by now was well out of range, so no one ever received his distress calls. However, he should be remembered as a hero. In his last moments, when he realised that he and the plane were doomed, he turned it away from the city and towards the sea to ensure there would be no ground casualties. His last act saved dozens, if not hundreds of lives. Blue skies and tailwinds sir.

I came here because, i saw a report of this on fb..i was reading it and there was some thing that i didn't understand that maybe its me that's dumb or it was a error of the person who wrote it, im pretty sure its me who's dumb but still i would like to ask...on the report it said that the jet pilot saw the passengers unconscious and that the 'oxygen mask was dangling infront of them, im not sure if it meant the passengers didn't have time to put them on..or...i don't understand?

@@x-rinanimationchannel3687 From the accident report: The NASA Aviation Safety Reporting System (ASRS) conducted a search of its database for incidents similar to the accident flight. The result of the search yielded 171 reports of air conditioning and pressurization problems that involved Boeing 737 aircraft in the past decade (1994-2004). Of the 171 reports, 58 were deemed critical.
