Protip: the thing that goes between your toes on a pair of flip flops is actually called a thong. Any strip of leather like that is a thong, including the one in a pair of shoes, one in a sling, or the one that (I presume) goes up people's butt when they wear leather thong underwear (presumably where the name came from). Also, sandals are any flat shoes that basically have a non-enclosed top, so sandals is a larger class than flip flops/thongs/double pluggers (my favorite name for them).
