Those overdrive drums are a nightmare if you are not experienced with them to reinstall the lip seals. I spent a few hours figuring out how to reassemble that. Even though I can do it, I took mine to a transmission shop, and had their rebuilder do it for me. He did in about 5-minutes...no problem. I slipped him a $20 bill for doing it for me.

Agree, they are a pain in the ass until you've done enough of them to become good or give in and buy the special tools which are typically cost $400+ good-used on eBay. Thanks for watching, Chris!

Lots of good information for several different kinds of applications. I’ve got a 4L85E behind a Duramax that I’m planning a rebuild for and it’s nice to have an idea of what to ask for when i take it to a shop.

Thanks, Tom! Appreciate the view and kind words. Check out my Basic Rebuild Series (or HP Series) on these transmissions when you're ready to build your 4L85E as you'll have step by step guidance...Links for each are in the description of this video.

Jasper plugged off the reverse lube port, but did not leave off the center support second sealing ring. I guess that means the the transmission was not dual feeding. I used that Jakes Performance center support heavy duty spring cage plate in my 4L80E transmission build, and it seems the reason for not using all 12-springs is the plate is thicker than the stock plate so trying to use all 12-springs gives it too much compressed spring pressure.
@nickstransmissions18 күн бұрын
Yea, not sure why they installed it as it becomes a hinderance/barrier to apply fluid for third. Interesting re Jake's Performance kit kit but their plate is the same thickness as CKs and many others but his kits are the only ones that have you leave out six of the 12 springs...I spoke to Chris at CK about it a couple months ago and he wasn't sure why that approach either...I will have to call Jake's and get some more information on it...
@christophersanders500717 күн бұрын
@@nickstransmissions I tried installing Jakes heavy duty center support plate with all 12-springs because I did not follow the instructions, and I had to put so much force on my clutch spring compressor to clear the snap ring groove that I knew something was not right. Then, when all else failed, I read the instructions, and used the 6-springs Jake recommended instead of the full 12, The plate went on easily after that like it should.
@nickstransmissions17 күн бұрын
I have always used 12 springs, even if running the high rate return springs however the springs in that particular transmission were factory GM, not the HP springs. I use my shop press for installing all snap rings unless I can do it by hand but if you're using a bench mounted compressor or the kind that use a threaded rod and compressor 'arms' with a base plate, I can see how it would take some effort to compress those springs...

Great video but i thought the early and late 4L80E converters interchange
@shaun4bigblocks99317 күн бұрын
Probably all interchange "physically" if considering a stock 32 spline input shaft- but I would assume the aftermarket has some HP 35 splined input shafts out there. Most GM OD's including the 4L80E got PWM in 94' so that is a BIG change. Different stall speeds- especially Duramax vs LS builds- because LS/Vortec engines need to rev to make decent "useable" torque necessitating a higher stall speed (ever wonder why a 240 HP Caddy 500 doesn't "feel" like 240 HP, same concept with a 70s/early 80s 350.) I am sure there are other differences, but that would be master Nick's pay grade ;/)

Thanks for watching, Charles...The converters themselves are interchangeable provided there's correct spacing between transmission and torque converter upon installation...I believe the problem with this unit is there was literally no space at all between them.
@nickstransmissions17 күн бұрын
Thanks for watching and commenting Shawn! One minor correction - PWM TCC apply strategies were applied to all years 4L80E; GM introduced the PWM TCC apply to the 4L60E in 1995....I'll look into thicker input shaft splines for these as I never ran into a shaft with more than the factory spline count...

Hey there, I have a blown 6L80E torque converter would you suggest CP convertidores pilinger converters over GM remanufactured converters? The part number is B-85JMBXBC or any other suggestions?

Call Florida Torque Converter - they will get you fixed up with an upgraded clutch, billet cover and flanged hub.

Not surprising given large-scale reman company margins are typically pretty thin compared to more boutique shops and performance-focused transmission firms.

Interesting I have a friend. I guess you could say it like a contract or an agreement between himself and Jasper engines and transmissions and that’s all he uses if someone comes in and needs a transmission overhaul. They pull it out. Send it off and Jasper sends them a new one or a rebuilt one, but they 100% stand behind the warrantyon engines and transmissions as long as they install them if you bought it yourself and installed it forget it it has to come directly from his shop, but it would be interesting to see just what they do. I guess I’ve heard all kinds of stories.

More and more of the auto repair industry in general is moving to that general sourcing model for transmission replacement once it's determined the transmission requires a rebuild.
@jraydelatorre17 күн бұрын
@ yes, sir the days of local shops with builders at the bench are becoming a thing of the past. I was down there doing some Transmission builds then it turned into R&R only and I decided at my age and already in my retirement years from a previous occupation, it was time for me to go back home and take it easy, but they’re doing really good at what they do but the family owned shops. Mom and pop operations are becoming a thing in the past. There’s a lot of buildings out there, but they’re all working for big companies like Jasper doing production rebuilds I’ll have to finish watching the video later to see what all was found.
@nickstransmissions17 күн бұрын
For sure, which on one hand is a shame because the trade takes some skill, knowledge and care but if you have it, it's great for both the builder and customer vs today everyone gets a half-assed reman unit with none of those things going into it...On the other hand, it leaves a supply shortage relative to demand for more personalized service and work which folks like me can fill, making a decent living. Check out the rest of the video when you have time as I show what I believe to be the cause of this thing's demise...
