So sorry, my horse had a scare with colic back in May as a result of her lyme disease and a possible case of anaplasmosis. The best advice I can give is make sure your horse is with someone that checks on their wellbeing, keep them up and moving, don't let them roll, do your best to get water into them, of course call a vet even if it's not your usual, and having bute handy is always good. I'm also so thankful that I got a diploma in equine agriculture because even though I had my very capable barn owner and friend with me suggesting a plan of action I was able to check her temperature, gut sounds, pulse, respiration, mucus membranes and hydration on my own. You absolutely do not need a diploma to learn all that and I recommend it to all horse owners because by the time the vet arrived I could tell him my horse hadn't pooped but had active gut sounds, her temperature was up and thanks to my sport requiring us to know their pulse at a standing rate as well as active rate I could tell him her pulse is normally 32bpm at a standstill and it was currently at 40bpm. I really hope Smokey will be okay and he's lucky to have someone who's prepared for these situations that all us horse owners fear most. Also this isn't me at all commenting on the actions in the video, it's just I think anyone that's had their horse colic can probably share some advice on what to do if this happens and help other horse owners.

Really feeling for you, when our babies are poorly we feel so helpless, it's awful, but Smokey is getting the best treatment and we are all sending healing vibes, love to you for strength to cope xx 😐

My mum‘s horse had sand colic and she had to go through major surgery and they ended up taking out a builders bag of sand. We now have to be really careful that she constantly has food but not too much and not too long grass. She goes on psyllium for the first week of every month it’s hard work but if we didn’t she could get colic again and it would be detrimental this time

my pony has had collic and it was such a scary 3 weeks but she went to rainbow and trust me thats the best place for him they did everything for her and took great care and she is now back to her normal bucking crazy self sending loads of love to you and smokey xx

Just want to leave a helpful comment for anyone looking along the comment section. Sand colic is common in certain parts of Aus with our soils. A lot of people in Aus feed psyllium husk everyday for 5 days, once a month. Very effective at picking up the sand through the digestive system. Talk to your vet or equine nutritionist specialist before doing so as you always should. I hope smokey has improved poor boy.

I am so sorry this happened! colic is a nightmare for any horse owner! I hope you can figure out why he had so much sand in system to begin with(not enough to eat in the pasture?). Lots of strength to you and smokey!

I’m so sorry Georgia my horse had sand colic and I was literally just the same. It’s so stressful having your horse in the vets especially when they are far way. I know the feeling and I know that all horse owners could never imagine being in your position unless they have been through it.
