Of all celebrities I ever met, he was the coolest. I was setting up his stage show and seen him walk in, I jus yelled out, “ Yo, Smokey. “ and he can over gave me a hug and was asking how I was, and what’s happening. He then showed me the correct way to handle your celebrity; he walked to to each of the crew and shook hands thanking them for their hard work, and making us laugh. He was the epitome of class, and made you feel the capacity of his love. He is the man. Much respect to Smokey, oh and we hung out in a secret room in the back of the club and heard him slay, sounding better than ever, and that was 25 years ago. Never forget it.

Always loved Smoky. Class man. Saw him in Toronto at Ontario Place in late 80s. He was in between songs chatting with the audience. He then said any requests and me from mid way back yelled “Second That Emotion”. I must of hit some voice travelling funnel cause my voice carried above all others. Smoky looked my way, saw me with my girl (my wife now of 29 years) amd said this one’s for the cat with the loud voice and his good looking girl and he went right into the song. I’ll never forget it.
Ah.. that’s class.. Great memory for you and thank you for sharing..Smokey is a legit legend within the music industry.. Across all genres over the last 50 years plus.. Bonkers that.. nothing but respect.. 👏👏👏👏

The story Smokey tells here about the session guitarist coming up with the riff for My Girl on his own is a reminder that the line between a composition and an arrangement can be a blurry one. Sometimes an arrangement can include melodic content, as is the case here with that extremely catchy guitar riff that no doubt added to the appeal/success of the record. But in the end he gets no credit as the composer, so no royalties. At least Smokey credits him here, but I'm guessing he would have preferred credit on the copyright.
@zdave60833 жыл бұрын
No blurred lines in my mind about it. The song is the chord changes , the main melody and the lyrics. Everything else is arrangement . Studio players have always contributed to the arrangement. That don't make 'em songwriters.
@dimebagvinnie6443 жыл бұрын
Guessing that awful shyt happens alot , hope his guitarist is rich
@imagine070183 жыл бұрын
@@zdave6083 Wrong. The chord changes, melody and lyrics are bare bones. Give it to a sad singer, a sad arranger, and some sucky musicians and that "song" will be as bland as your response. If you've ever played in a band you would know that a change in one member changes the entire sound. Music is a collaborative process. And it is an injustice that Robert White or any of the Funk Brothers never got royalties (although later they got credit) for their creativity, no matter how much their "contributions" are used or sampled. That's what happens when you turn art into someone's private property. PS: Ask Clyde Stubblefield what he thinks.
@zdave60833 жыл бұрын
@@alexandriaocasio-smollett5078 that gtr riff that y'all are so enamored of was by that time one of the first things a beginner player learns. Just tossing in a tired lick don't make you a writer.
