This is my very first training session with Smokey. If you are not able to get your puppy to focus, get your puppy engaged and drain a little bit of their energy. Get a ball and play some fetch (of course at first you may be doing the fetching), play tug of war, or get on the floor and do some good rough housing. Give treats while you're playing to build engagement.

Hello! I have a 3.5 month old Blue Heeler-Rottweiler-Husky mix I’ve adopted from someone who had an unexpected litter with an anonymous dad. But he is very loyal, he protected me when a wild chicken came after me (haha), he will listen unless he’s focused on other animals such as herding chickens, but listens well by himself. He knows sit, down, wait, and gentle when eating food. He walks off a leash, but sometimes he gets too happy and runs off, but lately I’ve been walking him on a 15 foot leash to sort of have him follow me more accurately, yet still have freedom of walking, and it’s helped. He likes other people when I take him to stores and stuff to socialize him. But when he’s indoors and at home he randomly starts peeing whilst walking. He mainly does it after rough housing with my 2 year old Pitbull mix. He now does wait by the leash and door to go out, but still potties indoors not in his control. I don’t think it’s because of deworming and anti-flea/tick medicine, but he only has done it since I’ve given it to him. I am also crate training him. Thanks in regard!
@heelersanonymous2 жыл бұрын
This is pretty typical behavior for a young male. Not all of them do it but some do especially if they have a tendency to be more excited. He'll probably grow out of it. My best advice I can give you is don't shame it as it will only make it worse because he'll lose confidence and start doing it when he's scared too. Also keep in mind it can take 4-6 months till they are fully potty trained but this specific behavior may take longer to get rid of. He'll probably deal with it till he's no longer acting like a puppy which could be years with this breed.

Can you give advice on demand barking or barking in general? Also jumping up on me and biting? My puppy is 3 months old and is very energetic. Thank you, I’m happy that I found your channel. It’s been years since I had a puppy!
@heelersanonymous2 жыл бұрын
Teach your puppy to "speak" every time it barks just say speak and reward it. I know it seems backwards but eventually they will only do it if they're told to. Jumping and biting- this will take a LOT of time. But what you need to do is consistently remove them from everyone by going into a kennel. They love being around their people and don't like it when they're removed. They'll quickly associate the bad behavior with the consequence and it will stop.... Eventually. I say that because this breed was bred to bite and jump around. With that being said, drain your puppy's energy everyday at least once. We like to play fetch for about an hour every day.
@karenlewis93302 жыл бұрын

Hey dude, just got my first cattle dog a week ago. She about 3 months old and was super skiddish and shy when I got her. She’s gained a significant amount of confidence this week and now that she’s comfortable with us I’m trying to start training her. She knows sit, and recently learned lay down (thanks to your video). The problem is she doesn’t stay focused on me at all. She’s all over the place and could care less about treats (she just plays with them). Any advice? I need a well trained dog and am willing to put in the work, but she’s a tough cookie
@heelersanonymous3 жыл бұрын
It may take some time getting to know what treats your dog likes. Also, try when your dog is hungry. Be sure to give it a job, like fetch, and use the toy to engage it while taking breaks to get it's attention by practicing commands. This will help teach it that it needs to not just be focused but to also know the difference between play and work. How this helps.
@heelersanonymous3 жыл бұрын
Another thing to keep in mind, if she has a shy demeanor, it will take some time and patience to build trust. Consistent positive reinforcement is a must. This needs to be used to build positive behavior and to remove negative behavior rather than using punishment. Otherwise the problem will just get worse. Keep this in mind while your potty training just as an example. If you're using punishment when she has an accident can lead to less engagement and confidence.
@supercliff49943 жыл бұрын
I’ll definitely keep at it and try some new treats. She seems to care most about her toys, so maybe I can leverage that instead. She learned her name in a day as well as sit, so she’s definitely smart and knows what I want. But she won’t come when I call her name, and when I reach out to try and pet or encourage her to sit/lay down she moves back or away completely. And if you have any tips for poddy training, I’m here for it lol

1st time Blue Heeler mama! I rescued my pup at 10 wks old from an abusive situation. He is now a 8 mos old & fixed. I have 2 other dogs & 3 cats. Frankie jumps alot, still nips, and is scared to go on walk or his harness. I basically have him able to sit and stay. Is it too late for me to train him now? I know he is so smart he has even figured out how to open his food containers. Also when he plays tug a war with the rope hanging from the tree he plays so hard he seems to be so out of breath, when he finally drinks water to drinks too much and throws up, why? His potty training was going well but now he has taken up peeing in his crate and on my couch, help. I have new couches coming soon. All advice and suggestions are welcomed.

It's never too late. It sounds like you do have a difficult situation but not at all impossible. Be consistent. That's the key. Make sure he goes in his crate on an empty bladder and consider crating him at night and certain times during the day when it's convenient for you so he feels like it's his space and not a punishment area.
