Robert Cray was the first person who made me desperately want to learn how to play guitar, sing and write songs. My Uncle Paul Jones had his album "Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark" when my family visited 25+ years ago and he gave me a cassette copy that I quickly wore out (favorite song: Night Patrol). I soon owned my own copies of all his albums and have kept up since. Some day I hope to see him live, that would be a dream come true for me.
This song is from the Robert Cray Band's fourth album release (1986), Strong Persuader, produced by Dennis Walker, which received a Grammy Award. "Smokin' Gun" was a crossover hit (#2 on the Mainstream Rock charts) that gave him wider appeal and name recognition.
I recorded this version in a friend's home in Wells, Maine while on a recent short vacation there. -Thanks Andy & Jenny!
