Great job Rus!! It really does not surprise me that the offset has more smoke flavor than the pellet grill. A split of woods as it burns releases a lot more gases to really boost that smoky flavor compared to a compressed sawdust pellet. But I completely agree with Derrick that the LSG Pellet Grill has way more smoky flavor than any of the other pellet grills that I have owned. You certainly put the work in to this cook!! Thanks for sharing!!

Just a thought, letting the judges hear the other judges thoughts can influence their take. It happens. Blind taste testing, separate from other influences is the way to go. Also choking the offset down may have countered your natural/best smoking practices. Lastly, the BBQ cook is often subjected to enough smoke that it dulls his/her senses of the smokiness of the product. A shower, and change of clothes after the cook, can often refresh the olfactory senses. JMHO, Love the video and effort Russ!

Yeah, I kind of thought about that after the fact, but oh well I'm sure I will do something similar before long with some sort of beef. First off, roll dang tide! I’ve had my first pellet smoker (I never use it as a grill) for about a year and have a few observations. Except after initial start up my pellet smoker doesn’t produce smoke the way your Lone Star did. It burns pretty clean but according to other chefs you want clean smoke. Also my pellet smoker runs much hotter than its thermostat indicates. Using a third party, and reliable, thermometer my smoker runs 30 to 50 degrees hotter. I noticed for my first few cooks the meat reached temp much sooner and it turned out dryer than expected. I’ve got a Grilla Grills Silverbac but may look at the Lone Star down the road. Always looking for more smoke flavor without the hassle of an offset. Enjoyed your video.

It's hard to beat an offset, however, I run a pellet tube in my pellet grill for the "extra" special smoke I want directly for flavor. I'm finding maple to be one of my go tos these days for chicken, beef, and my smokey potato salad.

I consider myself to be more old school. I have a lone star offset that I'm very happy with. I like cooking over real wood and managing the fire. I will consider a pellet grill when I am too old to manage a real fire. To me a pellet grill is pretty much an Easy-Bake oven. Set the timer and forget about it. I will give you that it is convenient, but nothing beats cooking over real wood and managing the fire manually. Just my two cents though, I ain't hating!!

What I like about this pellet grill is that you can add the charcoal tray and add some hickory blocks which will add more smoke. Low temp for just for the smoke for about the 1st 3-4 hrs then take it out and finish the pork with pellets. That will give you a lot more smoke on those butts...... if that's what you like lol....

It all comes down to personal preference, how much you want to spend and how much time you want to spend "tending the fire." I've had a Traeger Lil' Tex Elite since 2012 and love it. Personally, I don't want to take the time to stand around and get the fire just right and fidget with the vents etc., to keep the temperature just right. But to each his own. Good video.

For there to be a really close flavor profile knowing the pellet smoker is way newer without years of cooks and seasoning, I am impressed. The only way to due a true comparison is to have two brand new units that have just been seasoned and do the first cook simlutaneously. That is of course for the purists and not economically sound or needed. With that said I can say that with time the pellet unit should develop the same flavor as the offset.

Me personally I enjoy a bit of smoke flavor but can’t stand still tasting the smoke hours after a meal. What I'd like to see is a comparison between the Pellet Grill and the Insulated Vertical (assuming you still have that Mini) with a FireBoard 2 Drive / fan... so it would basically be two pits, each thermostatically controlled with FireBoard technology, and engineered by the same company, so the comparison should in theory get much closer to charcoal and wood versus pellets being the only variable. I've heard those Insulated Verticals with about a 60% / 40% charcoal to wood ratio get damn close to offset flavor but with the ease of a pellet grill. Also thought that fly was on my monitor 😅

Nice video Russ, well as is customary, on your channel, I just have a couple of questions, 1- Between both grills, which is more versatile when cooking according to your knowledge 2- For this Butt, how many bags of pellets did you use? Here obviously the manufacturing quality of both grills is not discussed, that is above all they are of excellent quality...Thanks for sharing
@SmokyRibsBBQ3 жыл бұрын
I probably used 10 pounds of pellets on the cook. I would say the pellet grill is the most versatile since it also has a cold smoke function. Both pits can grill, bake, or smoke meat. The offset requires tending to the fire, and the pellet grill does not. Fill up the hopper with pellets. Press a button and dial the temp in. Just that simple. Also has a really nice app from Fireboard where you can make temp adjustments, program presets, monitor, and shut down all from your phone and it's WiFi. So the pellet wins on most versatile hands down.
@gofy848111 ай бұрын
If you use the LSG pellet burner , and add the wood chips to the pellet blend, you will see a more smoky flavor. The pellet grill will actually be at LEAST as smoky as the wood burner. No question. You might even find that you back DOWN on the smoke chips, as too much smoke flavor isn't what makes a good brisket. (in my opinion). When you can throw your brisket in, set the temp, and walk away until it's done it is almost a no brainer to get the LSG pellet smoker. I also think that this ONLY pertains to the LSG smoker, since I have owned the Pitt and Spits, and others, and NO other pellet smoker comes close. If you compared a Yoder, or a Pitts and Pitts to a wood burner, then the wood burner would win by leaps and bounds. No one makes a Pellet Smoker that compares to the LSG
@SmokyRibsBBQ11 ай бұрын
I agree, no one builds a pellet smoker as good as LSG. I haven't used the LSG wood chips because in all honesty I just don't think they are needed.

Good video, Russ. I have noticed on my pellet grill (which is an inexpensive; more common one), that the only time I see that "thin blue smoke" is for a minute or two after opening the door - essentially while its heating back up after a significant drop in temp. I figured that was how Lone Star Grills would get more smoke; however, intuitively that would mean a less efficient burn. I wonder how the fuel efficiency is effected by the continual changes in feed rate?

Probably not as good as most pellet grills that don't smoke well, but I used around 10 pounds or so on this cook. Cheaper than the offset LOL

My body has offset is barbecue always has a dirty smoke flavor. My family and my self all have sensitive palettes towards over smoked product. Everything turns out from the pellet grill so wonderfully, I run the silver back from Grilla grills. I normally burn Smoke Ring oak, hickory cherry. Once in a while, my sister complains about too much smoke not very often. Usually the complaint comes from chicken being too smoky or pork being too smoky never beef. My personal preference has been the pellet grill for about seven years now. I would love to have an offset, but I really don’t think it’s necessary. I get enough smoky flavor to please everyone in my family. I just think that certain splits with an outside bark of the tree give a dirty smoke flavor. I’ve noticed when cooking from my friends offset that if we get good, clean wood center splits, the barbecue does taste a little better to me.

Damn it! I’ve had my mind set on getting the YS640 but have come across several reviews stating lack of smoke. Now this is about the 4th video I’ve seen of that LPG and I’m living in doubt. I think I’m gonna need to talk with my pastor before making a finale decision.

Do you think the yellow mustard really helps? Or does it just help on time because you might not need to wait for it to "sweat out" when adding the mustard?

Great video. I know there's a lot of interest in the pellet world on whether the Lone Star Grillz Pellet Smoker would deliver. Seems it has. Also I love fireboard, I run a fireboard with a blower on my kamado and it's excellent both in all the features, the amazing app and web app, as well as temperature control on the Kamado. So it seems the Lone Star Grills Pellet Grill infuses a bit more smoke flavor than most others? How would you compare it's smoke flavor to a Kamado grill or other charcoal + wood smoker?
@SmokyRibsBBQ3 жыл бұрын
It can hold it's own against any kamado or kettle grill. It delivers the smoke unlike other pellet grills, and it has a very pleasant taste.

How are the B&B wood splits… I’m in Long Island, NY.. I ordered a LSG offset but kinda having second thoughts because not able to find local cooking wood 🪵

They do good. They are kiln dried, and may tend to burn a little quicker than seasoned wood bought from a tree cutter, but it's about all I use now days. Great flavor however.

I’d like to see the pellet chips mix vs the wood offset. Educated guess tells me the pellet would be even closer to the wood.
@wyo_garage20 Жыл бұрын
I notice after cooking all day the flavors can be a little subdued. It sticks on your tongue and in your nose and certainly changes the outcome. No good or bad either way. I’d like to see the LSG pellet compared to the Smokefire. Smokefire has the best pellet flavor I’ve had, and that’s compared to every big name pellet out there. Haven’t yet had an offset but that LSG is the one for me👍

I'll be passing my LSG pellet grill to my youngest son soon. I just got a Ole Hickory Ultra Que. It has the flavor of a offset smoker but the convenience of a pellet grill. Outstanding flavor.

Can you please tell me when and where I can buy brown shrimp off the boat in Biloxi? I know May-Sept is the main season but I have a 3 hour drive to the coast from Madison so I know the expert will know.I have heard that beside the Hard Rock casino east side by the parking garage there are boats but it is hit or miss this time of year ,Fri-Sat being your best bet for buying off the boat.Your thought on this would be greatly appreciated Russ. Thanks brother
@SmokyRibsBBQ3 жыл бұрын
When I buy off the boats it is behind the Hard Rock. I was buying them from Ben's, but he passed away. When I can't get them off the boat, I buy from Desporte's. I've always been able to buy shrimp behind the Hard Rock on Saturday mornings, but it's been awhile.

The offset won out in smoke taste but I'm pretty sure they said it was also more dry than the one cooked on the pellet smoker. Either way, sounds like a win for the Pellet smoker to be that close in flavor.

The LSG pellet grill is in my opinion the best on the market, no doubt about it, but if you want to see how juicy meat can be off of the offset, be sure to check my brisket video out that goes live in a week from tomorrow. It was amazing!
