Very nice. It's always a good thing seeing small bits this being used; xps comes cheapest in the biggest pieces (8ft by 4ft) and its always easy to have odd pieces left over from larger projects, this just goes to prove you shouldn't waste anything

This is brilliant!!! I think this is the easiest way to get rock faces that show the layers of strata I've ever seen. When I try this, I'm going to paint some of the random "layers" slightly different colors, so it looks like actual sediment layers. Big thanks for the idea!!!

I’ve been searching for a method for turning foam into rock that isn’t overly complicated and will actually turn out looking like a rock when I do it myself and I was about to give up until I saw this. By far the BEST foam rock tutorial out there and trust me I’ve seen nearly them all. I only wish I would have seen this first and not have wasted 2 hours of my life and a full can of spray foam. 🙌🙏👍

Styrofoam does get everywhere. I tend to do the messy part of cutting it over a big box and usually outdoors unless it’s windy. Don’t wear long sleeves because it will stick to your clothes. Any little bits that stick to your hands / arms can be dusted off. Sometimes having a lint roller nearby can assist.

I've found that spritzing your hands/arms and the work surface with a very fine spray of water helps a bunch, it seems to kill all the static electricity.

I think this technique would scale up nicely! The one thing I would change however would be to use a thicker piece of foam, and carve deeper into so that the depth scales up properly. Also just have a reference image on hand so you can double check your work!

Is there a way you'd be able to do all of this but have it all aquarium safe? Does anyone know if plaster of paris molds would survive underwater? More importantly would it harm the fish. Would really just like to start making fake stone walls and what not for my aquarium. It's way cheaper than paying 500 dollars few a rock slab :/

Hi there, it took me maybe 15-20 minutes or so to make and paint this small piece. I made sure to dry the paint quickly with a hair dryer!
