Summer Schedule
Our schedule may vary, but expect a new video every Wednesday. Friday, and Sunday at 11AM Central!
How Farms Work by Ryan Kuster is a KZbin channel based in rural Potosi, Wisconsin.
Our mission is to teach those who didn't grow up on a farm what the farming life is like.
These videos show the Kuster family working together raising cattle and crops. We believe everyone who wants to know more about farming should be able to share the farming experience with us and we look to educate the world on many essential agriculture topics.
How Farms Work takes place on ~1,100 acres with around 75-200 cattle at any given time. Four John Deere tractors are currently used on the farm, which are a 4020, 4640, 7600, and 8235R.

Randy, you're a great farmer. I watch a lot of other farmers but you have good judgment in everything you do. I also look at the farmer's family that tells a lot about him. You by far have the most fantastic wife. None of the other wires are even close to being as competent and supportive. I like Rocket too. I'm just a retired engineer but I like farming. PS I watch all of the adds on your site as I know it helps your bottom line.

You better be careful or else Miss. Hanna will be taking over your camera duties, Rockette seems to have already accepted her and Travis seems to tolerate her, in his own way. Was that your Mom doing delivery duties with the Subway for the two of you? Well, what about your Dad? Do the two of them get along? And now back to the farming portion of our program. You guys seem to be doing a lot of work just to get those soybeans in the ground. Is there a reason (other than "the ridges are a little rough") that you're going over the seeds you already planted. My logic tells me that that piece of equipment that you are dragging all over the fields would disturb the seeds that you just put into the ground making all of that hard work you did was for naught! What is your reasoning for this extra step in your planting? Does it help with plant growth or increase plant yield? Does it help with your weed control? Just a little curious.

Here in Florida around Marion Co. anyway, They use what you call a Harrow, Is a Field Mat, It is used to brake up the clods of Horse Manure so it is not left in piles and kill the grass. The big Horse Farm next to us " Live Oak Stud " use a Mat like yours, I made mine from Hurricane Fence, Or what you call Chain Link. Of course mine is 5 Ft. wide by 8 Ft. long, A whole lot smaller than what you have.

Was wondering why you dont add talc when you empty beans from bin, Seem like it would stick to more beans that way
@lukestrawwalker
@lukestrawwalker 4 жыл бұрын
It's only needed to lube the seed meter and help the seeds flow down the boxes into the meter... Basically just dusting a cup on top of the seed once it's in the box is plenty. Always a good idea to dust it out EVENLY (more or less) across the top of the box as much as possible when doing it though... As the seed box empties, it empties from the center to the corners, so if you dump it all in the center, it goes down with the center beans all at once and goes through the meter and that's it... overloads the meter with the talc or graphite and then as more beans come down from the corners to the center as it goes down to the bottom of the box, they come down "dry". Spreading it out, the stuff will slowly sift down through the beans as the boxes shake going across the field, all across the box, so the beans end up with a much more even dusting of talc or graphite and it feeds into the meter more evenly instead of all at once... If you mixed it in the auger, you'd never be able to get a "certain amount" into EACH BOX, which is the whole purpose... OL J R : )

Down south I see they do a lot of 15" beans and 20" corn. Does that improve profit over 30" corn and beans?
@lukestrawwalker
@lukestrawwalker 4 жыл бұрын
Depends on a lot of things, agronomic factors... Seed varieties, genetics, environment, soil, climate, moisture availability, management, etc. Even depends on the year. What might do well one year might not do so great the next. For instance, there's been a lot of studies done on soybean planting row width... it's been shown that year in, year out, averaged together, that basically for MOST soils and climates, there's really NO advantage to drilling soybeans over planting in 15 inch rows or 30 inch rows. I doubt there's much difference between 30 inch rows and 20 inch rows in corn. Some guys up in Indiana have been planting double-row corn, two rows ten inches apart on 30 inch centers, so basically two rows 10 inches apart with a 20 inch gap between them. Some guys are even trying 15 inch rows in corn as well as beans. Gotta have a special head for those, though, and 20's... the twin 10's on 30 inch centers, you can use a regular 30 inch corn head-- the gathering chains will bend each row in 5 inches to "meet in the middle" and go through the row unit... I read a study years ago that said that basically unless you're north of about Indianapolis to the Michigan line latitude, basically there's not enough extra daylight length to really take advantage of the narrow rows and "make it pay" over regular 30 inch rows... I know a bigshot neighbor of ours, he'd been farming for decades, mostly rented ground, and in latter years mostly leased machinery... anyway, when his son got back from Texas A&M, he talked him into going deep in hock to get a 15 inch row corn planter and 15 inch cornhead and all that and retooling everything to farm on 15 inch rows... Didn't work out too well after about 4-5 years they went broke. Dad was old and retired and the boy got a job teaching ag in a local high school... figures! It never hurts to experiment a little, and see what works best, but don't bet the whole farm on it or jump in with both feet and borrow a ton of money to retool the entire operation without knowing if it's even gonna be a better option first! LOL:) OL J R :)
