We had to use the John Deere 630 after a stop valve failed on the VT. Turns out the 630 has its own set of problems.

Summer Schedule
Our schedule may vary, but expect a new video every Wednesday. Friday, and Sunday at 11AM Central!
How Farms Work by Ryan Kuster is a KZbin channel based in rural Potosi, Wisconsin.
Our mission is to teach those who didn't grow up on a farm what the farming life is like.
These videos show the Kuster family working together raising cattle and crops. We believe everyone who wants to know more about farming should be able to share the farming experience with us and we look to educate the world on many essential agriculture topics.
How Farms Work takes place on ~1,100 acres with around 75-200 cattle at any given time. Four John Deere tractors are currently used on the farm, which are a 4020, 4640, 7600, and 8235R.

Ryan, you should use the black UV stabilized cable ties. The white ones go bad much faster in sunlight. Bigger ones would be better, too. Better yet, proper hose clamps! Keep up the good work and thanks for showing a city boy where the food comes from.

Zip ties are handy. Use them to close wild rice bags when harvesting. Lot easier than using twine and knots. When dumping bags it is easy to remove a zip tie. Twine has to be cut with a knife, zip ties can be removed with the snip of a diagonal cutter or just plain pliers. Love those zip ties.

I’m not sure how the cylinder setup is on your specific VT, but it seems like you could use several cylinder stops to set the desired depth of the VT. I’ve done that with disks, soil finishers, chisel plows, etc.

Instead of running the fancy stuff like that valve I just bypass that and use the cylinder clamps, also called stroke limiters. That way you won’t have a issue and it will always be the same depth! I have had the same set 30yrs and used on all equipment and never had one break or wear out. Just a thought?
@lukestrawwalker

Zip ties to hold heavy stuff like hoses up off the ground-- NOPE! They'll give out when you least expect it and then you get that kind of mess you had there. Run 'em up over the frame then zip tie 'em down so they can't wiggle, just leave enough of a loop they don't pinch or bind when folding/unfolding. Think them zip ties are gonna disappoint you like that and leave you sitting in the field with oil everywhere when you least expect it or have time for it. Later! OL J R :)

What is the idea with vt a field is a faster form of tillage
@lukestrawwalker
@lukestrawwalker 3 жыл бұрын
The answer is "it depends on your goals and what you find as an 'acceptable job' and how much money you're willing to spend". There's been a LOT of guys take their old disks, swap out the existing blades for low-concavity (flatter) blades or even various flat chopping "coulter" type blades, move the gangs back to the "minimum" or "straightest cut" position (or even modify it a bit to go as straight as possible given the machine's design and still lift and fold properly without sticking a tire into a blade) and run the thing as a vertical tillage tool. Might not do QUITE as good a job as a full-fledged newly engineered to be a vertical tillage tool implement, BUT it can be done to an existing disk for probably 1/10th the cost (maybe less) of a NEW VT tool... Heck even that disk "as is" set to minimum blade angle and with a rolling basket behind it would do pretty much just as good a job as that VT they have... which is just a disk, basically, with the low-concavity blades on it. Now, true, actual "vertical tillage" machines that operate with essentially ZERO blade angle are meant to run at about 7.5-10 mph in the field to actually do the best job at fracturing the soil... AND their Earthmaster VT is supposed to run at a pretty high speed and at a shallow depth about 2-2.5 inches to do the 'best job'. Well, ANY disk running at 2.5 inches should be able to be pulled by a proper size tractor for it at 7.5+ mph in the field, and if it's using flat or shallow blades with the blade angle as low as possible, and WITH THE ROLLING BASKET BEHIND IT, it'll do as good a job as that VT they're running. Basically IMHO the only thing that VT *really* has going for it to differentiate it from that 630 disk IS the rolling baskets! IOW, hitch an Unverferth rolling basket to the back of that Deere disk you'd be HARD PRESSED to tell the job it did from the big Earthmaster VT even without blade mods to the Deere disk. Install the same blades on that Deere disk and the rolling basket behind it, and you'd have THE SAME JOB, basically the SAME MACHINE. Course, everybody's different and some folks would still turn their nose up and sneer and say "never do as good a job as a TRUE vertical tillage machine" and maybe *to their way of thinking* they might be right... And they probably already have a big note to pay off on a big shiny new VT machine anyway.... But if you asked 50 guys looking at the same field, you'd probably get a lot of different answers, and I'm sure more than a few would agree the properly modded disk did just as good a job, and for a fraction of the cost... OL J R :)
