Damien is the kind of friend I'd keep in the cheating question specifically. He wouldn't outright just cut me off but he'd hold me accountable and encourage me to be better. I want my friends to expect things of me and tell me if I fuck up.

The 'I have no expectations of my friends' discourse was wild to me. So you never expect them to care about you or the people around them? You never expect them to be there for you? You never expect them to like certain things, or want to do things together? I have expectations from my friends because I know who they are and I want them to have expectations of me too (I'll be there for them, I want to spend time together, I value our friendship, etc). That's how friendship works.
@bloggerbee2598

no because literally? you've got to have some expectations of the people in your life to try and do the decent thing or you'll start letting them get away with anything and that's how you end up finding out your friends have been particularly cruel. Imagine if the Try Guys had not fired Ned because they 'didn't expect anything from him'.

Yes. If someone is willing to cheat, even if the relationship wasn't that great, and they didn't want to break up, they either didn't care about the person or didn't want to have a hard talk. I came to the comments to see if anyone was talking about this in particular. Damien and Spencer gained a whole new respect from me tbh, as someone who was cheated on and all our mutual friends either took the cheaters side because they knew each other longer than they knew me, or played both sides because they didn't want to lose a friend, all ended up losing me as their friend anyway because if it had happened to them I would've held their partners accountable (and some cases that had already happened when they had been cheated on before me). Damien pointing out holding friends accountable gained a lot of respect for me because so many people just don't want to hold their friends accountable or get involved, until it happens to them and they want people on their side when they're hurting.

I agree with Damien on the whole cheating thing..if you truly care about someone, and it's a deep enough friendship to do so, you should hold each other accountable. That doesn't mean you should necessarily end the friendship, but you should have a serious talk about what they did and why. And if it's not a close friendship, I would definitely distance myself. As someone who's been cheated on, I really have no respect for cheaters. If you're in a 'committed' relationship and decide you want to break that trust to be with someone else, breaking up should always be the reaction, not cheating. It hurts less to be broken up with than to be cheated on, imo.

Exactly, cheating on someone is breaking their partner's trust and if they are capable of doing that they're very capable of breaking their friend's trust on various other things, not necessarily once a cheater always a cheater, but it's pretty much the case a lot of the time. Personally if I had a friend that cheated on their partner, I'd very seriously consider wanting to be friends with them.

Especially if it's repeated. I can understand going through a rough time and something happens once. But if you're not going to commit to someone, why pretend? @@urmom6670the prompt is about splitting a check. when you go out with friends, it’s usually common to split the check. the best and most polite way to split a check is to pay for what you ordered. however, dividing the entire bill is not the best. for example if i only ordered some boneless wings and a soda and my friends ordered a tomahawk steak, i should only be paying for my wings and drink since that is what i ate. some people like to divide the bill and make others pay for their expensive plate which isn’t right. covering for someone’s bill is different though. in this case, if you ordered a very expensive plate you should pay for that, not your friends. especially if your broke that week and someone tries to make me pay a divided check that includes everyone’s meals that’s unfair. if i only have $20 for my meal i’m going to order something under that because i should only be paying for MY meal

Wild. Apparently you cant be a good friend if you're broke. I also have been calculated with my money before, and only had a small drink to avoid paying more than I'd like in an outing. Why would i end up spending money I was avoiding eating myself to keep for later, on YOUR expensive meal?? You have money? Good for you. You want to take care of your friends? Offer to pay when mine is more expensive, but how are you a good friend if you DEMAND I pay when yours is? Backwards logic

If i have a friend who has cheated on their partner i will judge them and i will keep on reminding them of it but i will not just go like "hey you cheated you're bad influence i don't wanna be friends anymore". I get the part where it's problematic to say "i don't wanna judge you because it has nothing to do with me" and you should call out wrong doings but just ending a friendship and leaving a person behind knowing that they are on the wrong path of life is almost irresponsible which in this case, "unaccountable".

For real. I think the ONLY reasonable excuse (and that's with a very big "maybe, it's complicated) attached, is if the person being cheated on is an abuser who won't LET THEM leave the relationship. But that circumstance is VERY specific, and even then, most people would likely be too scared to even try cheating in the first place, then. Otherwise? Cheating is childish, harmful (emotionally AND potentially regarding physical health, disease, and pregnancy as well), shows lack of character, and shows how little they care for others. If they make the effort to change, feel true remorse, and make things right with the other party/parties if that's what the victims want? Okay, sure, stick around and help them through it, maybe keep an eye on their behavior from then on. Otherwise? Drop 'em

It seems that the other side who gets cheated on is not considered in these discussions. I was in a ten tear relationship, found out that my partner cheated on me with his coworker. That devastated me. I got depressed, started taking antidepressants, had to search help from a therapist. The breakup happened about a year ago, and I’m still in recovery. This case screwed with my mental state. My ex confessed it to his best friend and I’m dissapointed in his friend that he didn’t do anything. There's some truth to what Keith said about not expecting stuff out of people, but ONLY when it's mundane stuff like meeting friends on time or paying a debt. In a relationship you’re looking for a specific person, if your current doesn’t work then you look for someone who does. It’s much different with friends, cause you make such different types. Friends are literally people you spend so much more time with than people you’re dating- ofc if it’s like years of a relationship then it hurts, but I still think friendships hurt more. Most people will spill their entire self to a friend, but not their romantic partner. Plus, as a woman, it’s men are much easier to be friends with than to date, losing them as a partner is usually more relief than heartbreak- losing them as a friend is like losing your brothers.

I have broken up with and been broken up with multiple times in a romantic setting. They weren't all easy or fun or smooth but they all went decent enough. On the other hand, the biggest major friend breakup I had resulted in a conversation that went longer than any romantic breakup and got me slapped in the face. Definitely worse.

I don’t think it’s weird to expect your friends not to cheat on their significant other. I don’t think that should be considered a “high standard”. I understand that it can be hard to tell someone you don’t love them anymore, but compared to cheating and crushing that person, just telling them should be so much easier. 🤷‍♀️ Plus, how would you feel if you were cheated on and then you watched the person that cheated on you still get all of the support?

i could never be friends with someone that has ever cheated on someone cause they chose to knowingly hurt someone they love and me being their friend, they might do the same thing to me and hurt me. in a relationship, you're deserving of respect and honesty and the same goes to friendships and if you cant do that in a relationship, how can i know if you'll do it in a friendship?

I agree, it sorta turned me off for some of them and that makes me sad but also these are just glimpses of what they think. They didn't say that they're okay with cheating but that they "shouldn't judge"? But it's also good to hold your friends to at least some moral standard. One of the main takeaways I got from the Disagree's side on that question was that you shouldn't have expectations for your friends, but like all things it isn't black and white and if you really care about a person then you should hold them accountable for their shitty actions and expect from them the decency of breaking up with someone if you want to be with someone else instead of cheating, I think that's a perfectly reasonable expectation to have *especially* for your friends. The rest of the guys' views on this kinda bummed me out aside from Spencer's, and my respect for Damien has grown. I really appreciate these kinds of episodes and discussions though, we can see so many sides to these matters and it's never fair to assume someone's full character from one response--but that's not to say that it can't serve as an indication to some capacity, and some of their body language and their responses were grimy as you said.

as someone who’s dad cheated on my mom, and has been cheated on myself i don’t think i could continue being friends with someone who i know cheated. i may be up to talking about it, but once that conversations done i’m out of their life. cheating is never a valid or reasonable thing to do. i honestly can’t think of a situation where it would be. and, to be true, seeing how okay so many of them were with it.. hurt? i guess? my life was ruined by cheating, and i’m definitely projecting, but.. damn

Trying to justify cheating is a losing battle and I think most people know that. It's just that it's not that big of an offense to some people.
@dreamywhales
@dreamywhales Жыл бұрын
The only circumstance I think justifies it is if the other partner is abusive/they aren't allowed to leave the relationship. Like some people are trapped financially and culturally in marriages that they cannot leave safely. I wouldn't blame those people for seeking comfort from a third party. But I wouldn't want to be friends with someone who cheated when they could have just easily broken up if they weren't happy.
@cortnybailey6340
@cortnybailey6340 Жыл бұрын
@@dreamywhales I wish there was a different word for circumstances like that because I think relationships like that shouldn’t be considered relationships, because as soon as that imbalance happens, and the love and respect and trust are replaced by fear (or were never there in the first place) then it’s become something different. A negative, awful situation that someone is stuck in. Where someone can’t escape bc they’re seen as a thing and not a person. Seeking comfort and refuge in someone else wouldn’t be cheating to me, like that person shouldn’t have to have the word cheater attached to them. When I hear the word relationship, I think of it as a positive thing. So if you are able to leave the relationship and instead choose to cheat, then there’s no justification.

Yeah, you definitely don't know the inner workings of your friend's relationships, but I'm fully with Damien on the issue. A committed relationship is built on trust, just like a friendship, and if your friend knowingly betrays their partner's trust, I think some talk has to be had. *Especially* if you know both parties and are close to them, *especially* then, but even if you don't know their partner. On top of that, who's to say they won't betray *your* trust as their friend, if they went and did *that?* As for actually ending the friendship, that I'd base on how the friend reacts when confronted.
@notlark650

Fr. They betrayed their partner, the one they were supposed to cherish and care for above all else. Someone who's able to do that is not someone I wanna be friends with. I don't care how long we've been friends, there's no good reason to cheat excluding extenuating circumstances such as abuse. But if one of my friends is abusing a friend of mine they're dating, they're getting their ass kicked anyway so that doesn't matter

I’m short too and prefer aisles seat. It’s the freedom for me and I’m not even claustrophobic. Easy access to bathroom, attendants serve you first (I’ve had an attendant forget to serve me drinks cause she thought I was a child of the lady next to me and I was too quiet to get her attention). Also I’m first to get up and get my bag to deplane.
