Isn't it wonderful, the way Dickie joins in the bit with color comentary ? What a pair ! What a team ! What love they showed us, even in their apparent sibling rivalries. How could we not relate ? How could we not love them ? They held us in their palms . We never had a chance . Enlightening and timeless as the sun itself !

I'm 56 years old and loved The Smothers Brothers albums even when I was real little kid. Still trying to find the album with bit where they are arguing about Dickie having a dog as a pet and Tommy had a chicken, but Tommy couldn't get the chicken to bark, so he ate it. And: I was going through a bitter hard period in life in my early 30's but got to see these classic comics at the Puyallup Fair in Washington State and it totally lifted my spirits. Melted my cynicism and heart and I laughed my ass off.

Where in the hell did classic funny clean tv ever go? If anyone finds it hiding someplace convince it to come back to the screen. Smothers brothers are awesome.
@rogerrobin27742 жыл бұрын
We’ll, they were kicked off their television show for not being “clean” enough. I guess it’s all a matter of time, context and perspective.

My understanding was political controversy like in 1969 when taken off the air for mentioning about the V War. Seems like fun family entertainment to me. Yo-Yo Man is what I first remember as a child. I had a red Smothers Bros Red Yo-Yo

They were clean enough - they were just too political according to those with no sense of humor, i.e., Johnson & Nixon.

CBS got complaints about David Steinberg's mock 'sermon'. Steinberg being Jewish . Network told Tommy not to let Steinberg do anything like that again. In defiance, Tommy invited Steinberg back to specifically do another mock 'sermon'. Corporate dominance hierarchy can't tolerate deliberate defiance. They are trying to pass off dominance as if it were respectable authority. So they sacrificed the highest rated show they ever had......... That's show biz. 🙄

What a great demonstration!! 👏👏👏 I had never seen this before (and I'm OLD!) I loved the yo yo tricks but especially liked that they sang the song straight with no goofy asides by Tommy. They sang such wonderful harmony. I wish they did more of that.

I never much liked them when I was a kid but either they or me got mellower over the years. There's a clip of Tommy doing a Johnny Carson impression on KZbin that's pretty damned funny.

I remember this episode of The Boston Pops well. I watched it with my 3-year old son in the late 80's and he absolutely loved this performance. I taped it and he replayed it over and over. For years afterwards he'd do the big finish, "Yoooooo - Yoooooooo! Whop!" Still makes me smile to this day. Wonderful showmen.

For those like me who were looking for the version that was a regional hit in the South in 1974, it's by Rick Cunha and can be found on KZbin with the title "(I'm a) Yo Yo Man". It was also recorded in 1971 by Mason Williams, who had an interesting dual career as a classical guitarist and comedy writer for the Smothers' TV shows.

Pure entertainment. Like Carson their talent was not overwhelming, but they knew how to use what they had and present it in a manner the public loved. No swearing no drugs no hidden agenda. The best showmen are able to illustrate that it's because of their fans they are entertaining, always showing humility to the audience.
@stevenmeyer9674 Жыл бұрын
I think you have complete missed the amount of influence they had on television and comedy and music in general. Not only was their singing and specifically Tommy's guitar playing superb. Their topical comedy was presented with fantastic timing and showmanship. Your comment that "their talent was not overwhelming" couldn't be more misplaced.
