You only have to be away from Ottawa for a few weeks to sense things have changed. Like the mood and the tone of the Parliament Hill community. It seems the polls have had an impact on the feel of the place. Bruce joins for SMT and there's lots to talk about.

I don’t see where Canadians are backing away from climate change. People are backing away from the notion that the carbon tax is the best way to fight climate change. Smaller government and a system that rewards using technology to reduce emissions while lowering costs is the approach that most Canadians want to see.

The whole fight against climate change is a farce. Canada has less than 1.5% of the global carbon emissions, while China, Russia, India and the rest of the "third world countries contribute more than 70 %. Even if we are at 0% it will not change a thing.

I've moved away from carbon tax. It is efficient but it's not at all effective. US has no carbon tax and emissions there has dropped to 1980s level. Ours has increased despite the tax and it's getting to the point that is impacting our economy.

Aside from Trudeau’s overspending and ballooning Bank of Canada interest rates, carbon taxes are the next greatest contributor to inflation. The Trudeau government has lead to record breaking levels of poverty and homelessness in Canada yet he continues to welcome over half a million foreigners each year in attempts to buy votes.

As a farmer, you can not tell me that Pierre is wrong about carbon tax inflating cost of food. Chicken farms have been paying $25000-$35000 in carbon tax alone. Are you saying that wouldn't increase food prices? Shipping by rail has gone up 400% due to carbon pricing, how did that not increase my grain prices?

97% of farm equipment fuels are exempt already. Farmers get tax credits for the carbon taxes they pay. The govt. has forked over $500 million to help farmers switch to more efficient grain dryers. Are the figures you're using including the tax credits or not?
@socksrwooly
@socksrwooly 6 ай бұрын
@@Dimcle gas and desiel are exempt. Thats not 90%. There is the carbon tax we pay for transportation of goods (on our farm that was $800 alone) There is propane and natural gas for heating and drying. Farmers also get the bill for the increased costs of fertilizer processing and transportation, as well as seed production and transportation ($18000- $30000) I like how people think farming is just driving a tractor 🤣 Thats not 90% that isn't even 10% of our expenses carbon tax exempt. But please tell me again how 97% of farm carbon tax is exempt? After it leaves our farms it travels by rail (which currently is up 400% in cost), to a processer that uses energy, that increases food price again. Then the storage areas that heat and cool, they also will pass down costs to the consumer. But everyone is so sure that carbon tax isn't increasing cost of food. I want to know, is it lack of education how food is made? Or lack of knowledge how expenses are passed down to the consumer?

@@Dimcle You city folks are funny! Either way, someone has to pay the price for those fabulous grain dryers and the carbon tax is not like the GST, people pay it at all levels of the process, so in the end the tax payer pays the sum total of every levels of production, transport, storage, the repair shops and what not that is involved in the process one way or another. Then we need to shell money to the government so that they pay for the upgrade of every single farmers. If the price was worth it they would have upgraded their grain dryer, wouldn't you think?

The Liberals pulled a drama teacher from his classroom, and got him voted in on his name, looks and socks. He has screwed up every step of the way and shown why he was a drama teacher. Anyone who knows math and tried to run a household, would never say a budget would balance itself. That's just an idiot.

Peter, I’ve been tuning into your podcast since the beginning. I remember when you had that beep back then and I remember joking that it was aliens listening in. So much of Bruce’s spin on his polling numbers is detached from reality. This episode really struck me regarding your unshakable liberalism. I voted liberal consistently over the past four decades. (I’m aging myself) Peter, you’re right about assuming everyone “cares” about our environment. That being said, “climate change” is a luxury issue. Under 8 years of Trudeau, young people cannot move out of their parents’ basements and seniors cannot pay their rent, buy groceries and meds. No one I know is considering buying a new Tesla. When Bruce says Pierre Poilievre doesn’t have enough experience to be PM, I laughed out loud. Trudeau’s resume indicates that he was a drama teacher prior to stepping into the PM “role”. Pierre has over twenty years of experience in Canadian and international politics. Really wish your podcast would fairly represent the TRUTH and not just the SMOKE and MIRRORS.

Really love listening to you guys to understand rational liberal oriented members. Where I think liberals have a blind spot regarding climate is the hard reality is that any successful climate policy has to be economically sensible and honest. The carbon tax implementation and messaging did not line up with what people experienced and that type of dishonesty via selective messaging and application of policy ie Atlantic Canada is destroying trust in federal stewardship. There is a public trust that has to be of utmost importance if the climate movement is to be seen as sincere. It comes across as pandering which eventually results in disenfranchised and fragmented voters.

Polievre is NOT WRONG about the hated Carbon Tax. The moment you live outside of a Laurentian (read: elitist) mind bubble or economic insulation, you would see the stark lines unmistakably connecting the dots between the acceleration of your household misery and the Liberals' absurd taxes-on-taxes-on-taxes. This is palpable to us normies, irrespective of Poilievre's pointing it out.

Just a note on "peak oil", when I was a kid I saw a documentary from around the 50s (some of those old American information bubbles) that said we had 40 years left. Either way, we have reached it already in the sense that it costs more and more (efforts, time, money) to extract the ressource from the ground and that's not going to change as we have tapped all the easy oil already. On the other hand, we can get our electric cars (as I did) and make sure we don't use coal and other fossil fuels too much. The truth is that I suspect we are only slowing down the process, at some point these resources will be needed by someone and they will go extract it, thankfully we will have saved it for them with all the co2 reduction measures. As you said also, that small footprint of Canada, that's relevant, very relevant because if the important players are not doing the best they can there really is no point in taking the lead (Germany did, they did it the wrong way with wind and they they are paying the price, it did not work AND they pay crazy prices for their energy). Then on the other hand for all the emission control efforts we made in the last 20/30 years out Asian friends just made tree times as much... so globally there is more Co2, and the occidental countries emit less than before.

Peter, I'm such a fan and a new listener to this podcast. But... maybe add some new voices to the mix? Bruce is about as old-school, establishment Ottawa as you can get. Dude is completely self interested in maintaining the status quo. And maybe that's a bit of your own bias as well - having a bit of a contrast would be something to consider. Also, it's such a lazy cop out to constantly blame social media for deterioration in the political sphere. Fox News and MSNBC are not social media and I think they have done more to fuel the demise of trust in media and political debate than most. That doesn't even mention the crazy press environment in the UK. The point is that humankind doesn't need social media to be complete jerks. Any megaphone will do.

The next time the subject is Climate Change consider a thread along the line of the following. Elizabeth May,as I understand a past member of the IPCC in some capacity has often said the science is clear. This statement leads me to believe that the reference to “science” implies some quantitative evidence. Currently atmospheric levels of CO2 are +/- 420 ppm. Thus I ask the question with replacement oh hydrocarbon sourced energy with alternate sustainable energy sources, carbon sequestration projects such as that in Red Water Alberta, what is the target CO2 level we are striving for. 375ppm? 350 ppm? The clarity of the science should be obliged to put out such a value. Or otherwise are we being duped?
