“Franklin can’t win the big game.” SMU’s problem was that they weren’t the big game…they were just “next”.

Exactly, as much as I respect SMU they don’t have the talent to compete with the elites of the Big 10 and SEC

Where were the uncoverable wideouts and unstopable offense your cosche talked about?

Oh, come now, folks! The only way to be truly fair in selecting the teams for CFP will be if EVERY NCAA D1 football team plays against EVERY OTHER NCAA D1 team, then go through the process of determining which team won more and which team beat which teams, regardless of the conferences, except that would take literally YEARS to complete. It's to be expected that weaker teams with great W-L records would be blown away and get eliminated by the stronger teams with even mediocre W-L recods, in the early rounds, much like what happens more or less consistently in the March Madness college basketball tournaments. That explains why rarely, if ever, the champions from smaller conferences that automatically qualify for March Madness ever go beyond Sweet Sixteen, but nobody complains about whether they deserve to be invited to the tournament or not.
