Awesome to see this. I actually worked on the design of the Barracuda system before I retired. I also wrote most of the software running on the Q-53G subsurface unit (green circuit board visible at 8:23). Brings back lots of memories.

So the Barracuda USV is a single-use disposable unit? Seems like it would be more cost-effective to give it a shaped charge to attach to the mine and make the USV recoverable.

That might be more difficult to accomplish. Attaching a shaped charge to a sea mine. Often covered in filth and barnacles and moving and sensitive to magnetic field accostical disturbance possible a self destruct or a movable modern mine, etc I would think that when it comes to warfare and the USN… cost is a consideration but it’s probably not one of the major drivers. It’s gotta work every time no matter what. It’s like a plumber buying a pipe wrench. It (a high quality tool) might be triple the price of a lesser tool… but what you get for that increased price for the plumber/pipefitter is well worth paying it to be able to do the job well and make money from the trade. In the NAVY it’s your life that suffers if equipment doesn’t work.

Bravo to Raytheon for submitting the technical data package on the Barricuda mine-hunting system! However, the first Critical Design Review (CDR) in 2018 and Initial Operating Capability ( IOC) won’t be until 2028 - ten years! In comparison, the world’s first nuclear vessel (USS Nautilus) was authorized in 1951 and the ship was delivered to the Navy in 1955 - less than half of the time it will take for Barracuda to reach IOC. In 1957, USS Nautilus traveled to the North Pole - six years after authorization.

It all depends on how bad the Navy wants it and how much they are willing to spend for it. High tech mine neutralization has historically not been a big priority for them. Also, This is not a Navy spec contract. Sparton and Raytheon developed this system using their internal R&D money, then proposed it to the Navy. FYI, internal R&D money is in short supply.

Not really. You have a ship, you have a sensor dragging along to look for it, and then you have a munition to trigger it. All done unmanned. This is the sea where talking about. You cant use radio waves very well in the sea. You have to make certain stuff as autonomous as possible.

Wondering with the advancement of Hypersonic missiles and their difficulties to shoot down when we will see greater investment in underwater/submarine warfare. I believe countries should look at advancing submarine defenses because they might be harder to hit than an aircraft carrier. Hypersonics aren’t traveling that speed in to the depths of the oceans. Underwater tech might make a massive difference in any future large scale conflicts.

The patriot system's unclassified stats say if it detects a mach 5 object at the edge of its range, it has 20 seconds to react and intercept that threat before impact. That's a *lifetime* in the world of air defense. As long as we have patriot, even terminal hypersonics won't be a threat for a while.

Overall not a good design. Needs either an additional boat or aircraft to deploy! Plus it’s single use one way drone! It would be better to use a larger drone that can be deployed using a torpedo launcher. So it can be used by other ships or submarines. The larger size should increase range and duration with addition batteries for example. It should of had multiple projectiles to fire at multiple minutes. Like an underwater rocket pod 😉

I think such a drone should be almost as large as a torpedo. It will certainly has a very long flight time and be able to do many different jobs because of its size. It will be launched from a torpedo tube. It should NOT be a toy.
@honkhonk8009
@honkhonk8009 10 ай бұрын
Torpedos are already like that in the modern day. These "toys" are meant to be a cheaper option to launching an expensive and limited torpedo at a mine. The reason we still use battleships in the modern day is because their cheap. The reason we use artillery over Jdam's, is cus their cheap. You want cheap to produce stuff. Economies and logistics win wars.
