Me: Yes, I've always wondered how to brumate snakes. Also me: Never heard of the word 'brumate' before this video.
@valdemarjrgensen80725 жыл бұрын
Just say hibernation because that is what it is. Brumation is a terrible term that due to it's poor definition is misused. It's even used wrong in this video. This link can teach you what it actually means (and why you should just say hibernation): zoologyweblog.blogspot.com/2018/04/time-to-kill-off-term-brumation-for.html
@kourtneyrachele34 жыл бұрын
@@valdemarjrgensen8072 The term brumation is proposed to indicate winter dormancy in ectothermic vertebrates that demonstrate physiological changes which are independent of body temperature. Which is what she said the snakes are like in the beginning.
@valdemarjrgensen80724 жыл бұрын
@@kourtneyrachele3 Yes that is the correct definition, not the one she gives though. She talks a lot about "if" or "when" you should brumate. Which doesn't make sense for the actual definition.
@battlebear4374 жыл бұрын
@@valdemarjrgensen8072 I believe the reason she’s using it in that way is because in captivity a person may or may not need to put their snake(s) into brumation (reptile hibernation) depending on whether they’re planning on breeding them or not.
@valdemarjrgensen80724 жыл бұрын
@@battlebear437 yes that is how she is using the word, which shows she doesn't know the correct definition. You can't control a reptiles brumation, that's the point of the term and the whole reason it was made. Brumation isn't reptile hibernation, it's a specific kind of hibernation in ectotherms. What she is talking about is plain old "normal" hibernation.

"In Texas their basements don't get that cold" Haha joke's on you in Texas we don't have basements! ... actually, in San Antonio we kinda have basements, where half the building is built into a hill, though you'll usually still have a door to the outside from the basement, but this generally only in large buildings, I've seen some houses that have it, but they're pretty big houses. Depending on the insulation in your attic or garage, you might be able to brumate your snakes in there if you live in Dallas, assuming you have a plan for the occasional day that it gets in the 70s, and you're snakes can breed with only a month or two of brumation.

This channel has really developed my love for snakes, especially North American snakes. I never knew we had so many fun snakes! Thanks for bringing this up, I never thought about certain breeds of snakes needing the winter cycle. Something for me to think about when considering owning a pet snake, especially because I live in Texas. Basements in Texas... I giggled a little. The majority of Texas homes do not have basements, not even the ones that probably should, like the homes located in Tornado Alley. For most of Texas, the average winter temp is between 40 -60 degrees. We have a few days of the year that get below 30, but everyone freaks out like southern Californians on a rainy day. We are Texas tough, until we have to put on more clothing.

this video came at the perfect time for me! I'm doing a lot of research (breeding corns in 2 years)

About the little hognose: have you tried to assist or force feed it? I don't know much about it and I've heard that many people don't like to do it at all but what's your opinion?
@juliusroman86165 жыл бұрын
That seems like a good idea. Hognoses are picky eaters. I think she sometimes force feeds snakes if they don't want to eat at all. That might be a good back up option if he still doesn't want to eat after brumation. Of course, the only information I know is from watching this channel.

Actually this little guy ate a piece of chicken heart (I randomly gave it a try) the day after editing this video! So we won't be brumating him after all. I'll update everyone in a future video :) But for super picky eaters, I don't assist or force feed them. If they have no will to eat, even when scenting (and offering various prey items that most should take), then you just have to accept that some aren't meant to survive. It sucks, but dealing with failed hatchlings is part of breeding snakes :/ Thankfully that doesn't happen often though!

Snake Discovery may I ask why do you have a piece of chicken heart lying around?

I'm pretty sure the upper range of most refrigerators is ~40 F, so that may a be a cheaper way to make a brumation chamber. Even so, you can always just build yourself a thermostat (it's really easy, I'm sure you could do if if someone sent you a parts list... industrial temperature controllers are built to be put together by... well... just about anybody and don't require any soldering. It's quite literally just 2 wires for power (most of them can handle 120 AC just fine.. the ground wire (3rd wire) should be connected to the metal case of the box you build/buy. If it's plastic it's not necessary.), 2 wires for the temperature sensor, and 2 (or 4) wires for the relay to switch the load (in this case the cooler) on and off. So to make one all you really need is 1: a controller 2: a relay capable of handling the power of your load and 3: one extension cord cut in half (one side plugs into the wall to power the controller, the other side goes from the controller to your load.) And, you really don't have to worry about it screwing up and hurting your snakes because again... these things are built to be plug and play in industrial settings where they control literally millions of dollars worth of product. They can't afford to fail. And there really isn't any "tuning" required so there's really no way you CAN screw it up. (You can do tuning of course to make the temperature a bit more consistent as with some setups the temp will raise and fall around the "set" temperature, but even this is generally as easy as activating "tuning" mode then just letting it sit for a while. The computer figures it out.)

You probably don't remember but I asked about you guys making a series n videos about breeding a while back and I'm just gonna make myself feel good by thinking you read it instead of planning it in general.

Just a thought.....you should buy magnets or velcro for an card stock so then every year when you do brumate the larger snakes, you can just stick the piece of thicker paper on the windows....I hope that made sense....that way you can keep reusing the harder Paper Stock every year and not have to throw away a paper every year cover the windows....both are at Home Depot or craft store like Jo-Ann's Fabrics😀 if you want to go a step further you can always buy black or a blackout fabric from Jo-ann's and do the same thing😁

Texan here! What is a basement? 🤣 jk lol Are there any Texans that have a basement? If so, what city? I am curious because I don’t know anyone who has one lol
@pugsabi5 жыл бұрын
Right!? If it wasn't for family living out of state, I would almost believe basements were a "just for TV" invention.

This was actually very helpful. I wasn't sure if I needed to broomate my Corn Snake. Or if it mattered what age to broomate them. Good to know that they do that even as hatchlings. I had been debating on asking in a comment but now I don't have to. Do you think it matters of you don't droomate before breeding age then start the winter before you want to breed? I am curious about your thoughts on that.
@SnakeDiscovery5 жыл бұрын
That's what most breeders do actually- they keep them awake and feeding/growing year-round until they're breeding size, and then put them through their first brumation cycle to prepare them for breeding :)
@rose84media565 жыл бұрын
@@SnakeDiscovery I meant to like this reply not dislike it. So sorry! And it is true for most homes here in Texas. We don't have basement's. I know of a few houses that do but the water table is so close to the surface that every time it rains the basement floods. Or the surrounding rock is mostly limestone and moves so the basement and foundation of the home crack. It is a mess here. Now some have storm cellars which are not attached to the house. But I'm not sure you would want to put your snakes in there.
