Oh noooo, exactly what I was worried about, this is the problem with AMERICAN action films, they'll get some of the best fight choreographers and stuntmen in the world, but directors, cinematographers and editors who know nothing about presenting action. I don't know why we can't get it together, Hong Kong's provided the blueprint way back in the 80's. If you want action to look good put people who DO action in control, there's a reason why John Wick is the best action film franchise, because it's directed by former stuntmen, same for why Extraction had well done action sequences, directed by a stuntman. Action films deserve people who UNDERSTAND action.

The cinematographer for this movie was Bojan Bazelli, who has filmed a number of great looking movies, including Pete’s Dragon (2016) and The Ring (2002). Granted, there have been some movies that haven’t been well received critically that he also worked on, like The Lone Ranger (2013) and G-Force (2009), so maybe he’s had some issues throughout his career. But I think this is more a combination of Bazelli and the director who’s made movies like RIPD and The Divergent sequels. He’s also made good movies before too (Red, The Captain). As far as I remember, the action sequences in Red were pretty agreeable, with little to no shaky cam to be seen. I have no idea what happened here, it’s shocking that the action is as bad as everyone says it is, when they’ve both done good work filming it before.

My biggest problem with the movie was leaving out Snake Eyes’s real origin - he was a soldier. G.I. Joe always has been, first and foremost, about soldiers. Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow first met in the Army, serving in Vietnam. The movie could have easily updated that to Afghanistan or Iraq. Instead, the studio chose to remove all military origins from … a G.I. Joe movie.
@parawill70743 жыл бұрын
If you are going to do a "reboot" of GI Joe, you steer away from all the crazy action and be grounded in reality. The Snake Eyes character could be Asian and his background be steeped in Asian culture and the martial arts, but the sword play should be very limited. Snake Eyes always used firearms and his sword served more as a backup weapon and a way to project that ninja persona. This film should have been a gritty reality based crime film that gives us a more realistic version of Snake Eyes which leads to a new version of the GI Joe franchise that feels more like Tom Clancy than the action packed stuff from the previous films and cartoons.
@SuperGamerxl3 жыл бұрын
but isn't the crazy stuff the reason why people like GI JOE ?
@parawill70743 жыл бұрын
@@SuperGamerxl - Yes and no. A modern day "GI Joe" film set in today's world would make for a great military thriller. Basically, you have a clandestine government agency that has the nickname of "GI Joe". The agency would have an official name under the CIA and would be sent on highly classified operations targeting unknown organizations that the public have no idea exist. All the characters would have realistic backgrounds and the action would be based around our current real life SOF units and the CIA. That's the way to do a reimagining of GI Joe. You make it into a gritty and realistic military thriller that feels more like Tom Clancy.

It's not on the cameramen. It's on the cinematographers. A lot of them are directors "in training" and they grew up on shaky cam sequences and think that all you need to make an action scene frenetic is to shake the camera without a plan. It's also an easy way of lazily hiding cuts between multiple takes and disguising pulled punches and (in many cases) hiding the stuntman. It's also a case of too many people trying to put their mark on a movie. Subtlety is lost when a cinematographer or director tries to overdo their part.

@moxiemaxie35433 жыл бұрын
@@jakster16 that's a complaint with most late 20th and 21st century PG13 films. They want teens to see it but adults are the one with jobs to have money to see movies. Blood won't traumatize teens, because half of them get their period. Blood isn't inappropriate

Cap. Winter Soldier film should be the standard for GI Joe films. But Snake Eyes / Gi Joe would be better as a streaming series, with the action quality of Falcon and Winter Soldier or even Jupiter Legacy.

I liked the Snakes Eyes, Stalker and "Tommy" in Vietnam origin from the 80's era comic books. I understand why they wouldn't do that now, but they could have updated to the Gulf like Iron Man did...too bad. I got a lot of nostalgia for GI Joe, but the movies have been trash.

This wasn't meant to be a Scorsese, and it did have a lot of original Snake Eyes, Storm Shadow elements in the movie. The direction was off and the camera was bad but the movie is a good starting point to re-establish G.I. Joe in a more cool grounded way.

After just seeing this movie. I wish that they didn't go with the shakey cam fight scenes, they could've done made it rated R, but it was an okay movie. I'm glad the focus remained on snake eyes and the Arashikage instead of wandering too much in Joe territory. I have hopes for a sequel and how they establish him taking his oath of silence.

In issue #1 of the '80s comic Scarlett tells SE she has one bullet left, but they can't use it on the bad guys because she is saving it for herself because she would rather blow her own brains out than be captured and ray paid to death by middle eastern terrorists. In the final issue #155, when a young friend of the Joes writes SE a letter seeking advice on weather to join the military SE writes back and tells the kid how after the helicopter accident that burned off SE face, the guy in the next bed over in the army hospital burn ward -- burned worse than SE all over his body -- kept begging SE to smother him to death with a pillow whenever the nurses were not around. SE revenge plot in this new movie is Storm Shadows entire story from the '80s comcis. Not my Snake-Eyes. Please consider giving the two main issues that make up the core of the old comic origin a chance and report back to us what you guys think about it as well. @DetroitAlan013 жыл бұрын
G.I.JOE was the 80’s equivalent of a water-cooler show for pre teens. Snake Eyes was its coolest character. Despite that, this movie looks like a Kill Bill knock-off. Don’t want to sound like an arrested development gen X’er, but the character and this franchise deserve better treatment than Hollywood sees fit to give. Maybe it’s time to give this franchise, and, on a much larger scale, the 80’s, a rest.
