@@stevenwoods5787 I referred to them as martial arts superstars b/c they were internationally popular... except in the west. It wasn't until the late 90s that Hollywood actually attempted to introduce them to American audiences w/o changing what made them successful (ex: The Protector tried to turn Jackie into Charles Bronson). My point is that if you're a movie producer looking to establish a new action star in the US, there were many far better choices than Seagal. Some might say that the language barrier would've been an issue, but plenty of action roles are of the mostly silent type: Conan, Rambo, Mad Max, etc...

Steven Seagal has a huge ego. He likes to have actors from other action films co-star with him so he can be written on top. Actors rumored to have turned him down are Eddie Murphy, Denzel Washington, Jan Claude Van Damme, and Jackie Chan. Steven was reportedly upset with Under Siege. Feeling that there was no way anyone would believe Tommy Lee Jones would be able to last so long in a fight with him. One of Steven's failings was his lack of showmanship. How to show his characters were in the fight of their lives. He would hype the antagonist only to beat them in under 3 minutes at the film's climax. This lead to loss in box office returns. Soon Hollywood stop calling. And his career plummeted.
