I feel they definitely could have kept snake river expedition as just a calm boat ride. It would suck not having the story but its would be better than nothing. And if forbidden frontier could have lasted (at least the playground) if they squeezed in a new bridge near camp snoopy .

These attempts made it clear that CP wants to enter the Disney-Universal type market of *experiences* rather than rides. But I think it’s much harder to slowly introduce these things to an audience rather than opening an entire themed experience like Disney and Universal did.

I think a big issue was the park they introduced these in. At Knotts or Kings Island, two more family oriented parks, I feel these attractions would have been a huge success. Cedar Point, the most thrill oriented park in the chain, trying to draw in more families with this was like trying to put lipstick on a pig.

@@CoasterCollege They are not all the same demographics. Knotts & KI (and really all the ex-Paramount parks) heavily emphasized family audience, while Cedar Point focused on there thrill ride collection. It's like comparing Disney to Universal. They both target family, but Disney defiantly skews lower in target age. Kings Island has an award winning kids area, and Knotts was the OG camp Snoopy. Cedar Point just has 3 mediocre kids areas spread randomly on the right side of the park. Look how crazy popular the return of antique cars at KI. These two attractions would be obscenely popular if KI added them to Planet Snoopy & river town.

i do hope this doesn't discourage leadership against theming. it's a lot of effort to get a land themed, staffed, and popular enough to return profits. I live on the west coast and likely will never afford a trip just to go to Cedar Point, but competition in the theme park space is sorely needed. Disney is outpricing everyone and Universal is poised to directly compete with them with Epic. More competition and more experiences are golden in my book. Hopefully leadership at Cedar Point learn from their mistakes and open up better themed lands in the future.

Don't bet on it. The park is definitely on the wrong track, no pun intended, but Kings Island is SOO MUCH BETTER THAN CEDAR POINT. They have it down, what's the problem at Cedar Point? Same owners too.

I know that some attractions make less money than others, but as a park you need to have a good mix. The park I work at keeps removing it‘s darkrides for new roller coasters. They are awesome. But people are starting to complain. Familys want some more relaxed attractions and even enthusiasts would be happy with a new dark ride.

I feel the issue with Cedar Point specifically is they're not really known for being the most family-oriented park. There's a couple kiddie rides, but Cedar Point is known for being for the thrill seekers and most families who are interested in this type of attraction will likely go elsewhere unless they're in the immediate area. I do really love themed attractions and I hope they can succeed in the future; it just feels like Cedar Point doesn't have that reputation and it will be hard to build it up.

I'm very sad about the Snake River Expedition closing. I remember the paddle boats and then there was another boat ride about 20 years ago, I think. I was so happy that there was another boat attraction opening. Hopefully they will come up with something new. We liked Forbidden Frontier too. And yes, the bathrooms were awesome. Haha. I've been going to CP for nearly 50 years and it's fun to think back on all the old rides. Disaster Transport was my favorite. It was great to get out of the sun for awhile.

I was impressed with Snake River Expedition when I rode in 2022 but I convinced my sister's family to wait a good bit to get on it in 2023 (they were only running a couple boats) and it was a super watered down version. Instead of actors playing out story, it was mostly just the boat driver making dad jokes as we passed the various animatronics and effects, some of which weren't working.

It was a stupid thing to do especially for the big 150th anniversary at a park that's known for roller coasters and thrill rides. For what that ride cost, they could have put in 2 to 4 good flat rides like at Canada's Wonderland or even the two put in by Zamperla at Kings Island in 2023. This ride was another money pit, like Shoot the Rapids, which was called Shoot the Budget by us employees.

Your analysis was spot on, You also described why sci-fi shows get dumped for sit-coms and why sit-coms get dumped for reality TV and why reality TV gets dropped for shorts on Tick Toc and KZbin. If you can get a profit for cheaper then listen to the prophets and go for it they always say, and to heck with high quality that costs a fortune.

I agree with so much of the sentiment around this. We didn't discover Snake River Expedition until the fall of 2022. But once we discovered it, we loved it and rode it multiple times that season. Once we came back on in spring of 2023, we were so disappointed to see how much of the ride had been cut. We only rode it once that entire season because of that. I really hope that they don't give up on this type of ride because I think the original version of the ride worked extremely well, it's just that it was too costly. If they could figure out a way to make it cheaper but with the same level of experience, they're really on their way to something great!

Forbidden Frontier was super awkward as an introvert. At Knott's I could talk to a character or guide in Ghost town, but then go do something else. Also Knott's has more self guided experiences. Like explore the museum then go ride Pony Express. Forbidden Frontier felt more like we need to do all this at once and also didn't know where to start. We did 1 activity and they sent us to go look for a character and we had to talk to 5 other people to find the one character. So we did 2 things and were done. And it was so far from everything that we weren't going to naturally stumble upon it again unlike Knott's. Integrating these types of experience into Frontier Trail would have worked better. Like have these types of experiences at the Glass blower, barnyard, fort, and experiences we already have. I will walk the Frontier Trail a couple times every visit to get from Millie to Maverick. I didn't know there was a climbing structure on the island until we did Forbidden Frontier. Giant playground could have attracted families by itself if they knew it was there. Snake River Expedition was fun, but hard to find. A little awkward going into Camp Snoopy to find it. It's similar to taking the train through Boneville, but not as iconic.

I went to Cedar Point twice as a child and Paddlewheel Excursions and the railroad were my favorite things in the park. I went just before they closed Paddlewheel Excursions, then again a few years later during Dinosaurs Alive. I remember being incredibly disappointed that the boat ride was gone. I've always loved the themed areas and going there as a child kind of sparked an interest in dark rides/animatronics/themed rides. I've been going to Cedar Point annually for the past 3 years and was very excited to learn that the boat ride was back, but it was closed every single time I went. I go to Cedar Point because of the coasters but the added elements of frontier town and the railroad have always been an integral part of the park to me. Like the other comments have said, I hope this doesn't discourage them from utilizing themed lands/rides.

A very well done video! Nice historical record of these 2 attractions. I'm glad I got to experience both in their respective inaugural seasons. While I predicted FF would last less than 5 years, upon its announcement, I was surprised at the overall investment upon my first visit. I liked SNE for the 150th anniversary and thought it was a nice nod to Paddle Wheel Excursion and Western Cruise, but I have to admit I think they tried to do too much and wonder if tying it to FF set it off in a bad trajectory. My guess is that most people would have been happy with some corny puns by the captain calling attention to a few animatronics. A nostalgia ride not unlike Kings Island bringing back antique autos a few years before their 50th anniversary. I think they would have faired better with a second load/unload at the former Shoot the Rapids site with 2 boats stopping at both docks (transportation rides: Gemini midway to and from Frontier Trail) and 1 boat leaving each dock and returning to the same dock (full circuit ride). I'd also prefer a name like Cedar Creek Cruise. A gentIe wake created by the boat sells the stagnate lagoon as a creek, but a river is a bitt of a stretch!

I’m going to be completely honest. Something this video opened my eyes to was that I failed to see the bigger picture with these attractions. I worked at the park 21-22 in a position where I was able to roam the park. Walking through forbidden frontier was always sad because it was dead. And then snake river expedition was just seen as a worse jungle cruise. But I never really appreciated that Cedar Fair / Cedar Point was trying to do something new and enter the themed attraction space. I just saw them as failures and that CF/CP should have seen this coming. when in reality the ideas should have been appreciated. Your comment on CP being a concrete jungle really struck me. Thats not to say something like this wouldn't work somewhere else in the park. When you have one, relatively hidden point of entry on the entire peninsula, it naturally will get less foot traffic. The theaters at the front of the park still do daily shows. But it's in a highly visible spot by the entrance Im sure they'll attempt something similar in the future. @@CoasterCollege I think where ghost town alive took the win is it does seem to feel more authentic. Knotts’ ghost town is how the park started after all so the location already had a significant history behind it, and being located in one of the busiest areas of the park it was very easy to come across. From chatting with some of the performers at ghost town alive outside the park they really do put their all into it and from my trip to the park it is a very amazing immersive experience. I believe it’s all in house and Knotts keeps it very well staffed. It was just overall an incredible experience and I wish more parks would invest more into live entertainment. @@CoasterCollege yeah I love entertainment of any kind but I feel that a lot of shows are sort of the same. I prefer more experimental experiences, the late skeleton rooms at knotts scary farm are another example I think about. Most parks have generic musical revue shows and this and that but few parks have interactive improv based experiences. I highly suggest you research BGW’s burgermeister hideaway, it’s part show part immersive experience and it’s been a smashing success. Bgw also has roaming actors in Germany year round and then during Xmas town they have some other roaming actors in other locations as well. Even six flags New England started adding live actors to attractions like Houdini’s great escape’s pre show and their refurbished antique autos ride is also live actor driven as well. I think a potential future could be adding a live actor here and there to existing attractions because the ride can still exist and be entertaining without the talent but the talent adds that much more to the experience. When you build rides centered around live entertainment like snake river it quickly falls apart.

I haven't had time to watch the video. But if I did one let me add they also couldn't pay all of the actors. Live E! had budget cuts for 2023. They got the huge budget for 150 and Spectacular and the parades & floats which were only planed for two seasons. They did a good job getting creative within their budgetary constraints for the shows they had last summer and HalloWeekends seasons. Boardwalk/Wild Mouse/Grand Pavilion got the big budget last season. CP should have had the gigantic Forbidden Frontier sign on the Frontier Trail and an actor or two in 'attract mode' so people knew it was there. I liked both attractions.

Before investing in fully themed attractions that they didn't advertise, Cedar Fair should have used the money to theme up the current park so guests would expect and desire these type of experiences in the first place. Both also had a criminally high amount of staffing required that arguably would have been better spent on more effects or animatronics to tell the story instead. If they want to do themed experiences like this in the future I hope they decide to fully commit as well as give it a proper ad campaign, only after they turn Cedar Point into a proper theme park first.

I mean I do like that Cedar Point is trying to diversify but most people who are like me where it's pretty equidistant to go to Cedar Point and Kings Island tend to go to Cedar Point for high thrill and King's Island for family fun. Again, I know Cedar Point has family/kiddie things but that's just the reputation of the parks

I wonder what other plans they have with the island. It's a lot of area in a land locked park to not be using. I will admit that Expedition was better when Forbidden Frontier was alive, and kind of lost its story line without it. It wasn't the same after.

I got to go on Snake River Expedition when I was there. It felt like an attraction that wouldn't last. When Disney does theming, they do so with great capacity. This had none of that, and it made the line super long, which made the experience disappointing when we finally got to go, as it was an average themed ride. If they could have solved the boat problem and tightened up the story, it would have been great, but capacity killed that option.

I never got a chance to ride snake river last year which I suppose it's a good thing in the sense they cut the staff way too hard and was going to be less enjoyable....but also that means I'll never get to say goodbye. Everytime I went to ride it was closed for one reason or another.

It would be cool if they built a water-coaster and ground up wooden coaster back there and where mine ride is.

I went on Snake River Expedition the year it opened, which was my first and only time. I’m definitely not in its target audience and felt it was too cheesy and “kiddy” for my taste, but I definitely appreciated what they were trying to do. The 2023 retheme though… YIKES. I’m glad I didn’t go on it again. Something about it feels so rushed and cynical; I can’t help but think of Superstar Limo and its desperation to make something out of a deteriorating concept, not to mention how I’d feel if something like Jungle Cruise got overhauled to be nothing but a plotline about the Skippers trying to sell plots of land. In its 2023 iteration, riding it would just be a complete bummer imo.

it sounds like the sort of themed attraction you'd find at Dollywood, Silver Dollar City or maybe even Fiesta Texas, not Cedar Point.

Snake River Expedition probably won’t disappear, it will just return to the Paddlewheel Excursions/Western Cruise format w/ one captain and bad jokes. Just the way it was when I, Captain Crunch, worked on Paddlewheel!

The first time i did Snake River Expedition it was a fun and fresh change from the typical Cedar Point attraction. Over the course of that first year (I think I rode it 3 times) it started to get old and repetitive. The second year they stripped out some of the effects (removed the shootout for a knife thing, as if that’s somehow less violent) and it was already wearing out its welcome. Last year they went with a completely different, real estate, theme that was really just awful (SOOO cringe). It was nice going around in the boat but the whole concept of a themed experience with a story quickly stopped working. I (and honestly I think most local CP attendees) would have been perfectly fine with a peaceful boat ride and maybe a CP history narrative or something like that. It’s a nice break from everything else….until it becomes so cringe that it’s annoying.

Those sound amazing. I'm sick of being thrashed around on coasters and thrill rides. I love dark rides and such, but staring at a projected screen or a 3d screen like at Universal feels a bit lame. I love the theatre of this. I don't think theatrical performances that move the audience around from scene to scene need to be part of a larger amusement park, and I wish more attractions like this existed everywhere in lieu of traditional theatre. A well-scripted and professionally executed feature length production that runs a few times a day for several months or years before being changed could attract prices higher than broadway. A lot of the limitations of traditional theatre, like the cheap-looking 2-dimensional backdrops needed due to time and space limitations in a theatre hall could be solved by moving the audience from stage to stage, and through immersive environments.

I guess the challenge is designing theatre spaces and a ride system that is flexible enough to adapt to various productions and have the capacity to rival normal theatre productions.

I thought this was a poor use of manpower when they were chronically short on employees. They also misunderstood what non-coaster attendees are looking for. If people want shows, give them shows--and air conditioning! (during the same time frame Cedar Point conspicuously cut down on performances at the Jack Aldrich/Centennial theater and Lusty Lil's). FF: If they had just advertised a playground in the middle of the park with a large seating area where adults could watch while sipping adult beverages, this area would have been better utilized and still be open and profitable. That playground was awesome but nobody knew it was there because you had to navigate around a bunch of actors to get to it---everyone gave up or got lost before then. SRE: People liked the paddleboat rides because it was passive, you could take a load off get out of the sun. By removing the roofs from the boats and making crowds stand and listen to character speeches they made it tiresome and annoying instead of relaxing.

😅A CP first time or once in a year visitor is there for maximum thrills. A season pass-holder has been on all the thrill rides many times and craves some entertainment shows by humans rather than more of the ride machines.

I would just build some flat rides here and a roller coaster or two, dinosaurs alive didn’t work and neither did this. Of course there were staff shortages but the attraction didn’t seem that exciting at all.
