Don't use boiling water to defrost rats. You're literally half cooking them that way. No wonder the one snake won't eat it, it smells weird and has the wrong temperature.

Yesss ! I agree ! To anyone reading this, NEVER use boiling water pleaaase ! First use room temperature water for 20-30 min, then use the hottest water from your tap ! Boiling water will damage the rat/mouse inside, no good !

The reason some snakes look underfed is bc either 1. their breed or species is designed to look that way. or 2. snakes often go on hunger strikes for a short while or a long while. They're not not being fed for months some snakes just choose not to eat.
@forbiddenpineapple242

The reason that snake hasn’t eaten in 2 weeks is not only because the mouse was boiled, but also because ball pythons are picky eaters and will go on hunger strikes if not given food they like. If your ball python doesn’t eat frozen mice then you’ll have to resort to live feeding. Live feeding does have dangerous down sides which is why it should be your last resort to when feeding your ball python. They can be tricky, but it’s also easy to get to know your python.

up sides to rats 1) doesn't go on regular food strikes and generally has better eating habit 2) generally smaller food items and more active 3) at least in the US, very little climate adjustment is needed (ie humidity and background temperature) downsides 1) wild caught is still common, can be bitey 2) adult problem snakes may be sold which are horrible starter pets Issues with ball pythons are primarily the hunger strikes and wasted food, the requirement for high background heat (around 80 F) and high humidity (60% minimum which is very high in most of the US) Also, corn snakes ARE rat snakes.

I had/have amazing luck with my Ball Python (switched her from live to frozen thawed with this method) by simply thawing my rat in the fridge for like 4+ hours. After that I remove it and for about 20-30 minutes leave it on top of my snakes enclosure to 'present', getting her curious about the food and getting her into 'feed' mode (Doing this at night is best as they are more likely to be awake and readily smell the food). After presenting, to get it nice and warm I place it into a ziplock bag and into a cup full of hot tap water until warmed through. I use a thermometer gun on the rat to see if it's temperature is at least 90- 95 degrees F (32- 35 degrees C). Once that is done. I get the hairdryer and blast the head and nose of the rat thoroughly, getting it to about 100-105 F (37- 40 C). Immediately I take it to my Ball holding it with feeding tongs around the mid back or just above the shoulder blade (don't dangle by tail as dangling by tail can make it harder for them to strike, or the tail can fall off) and she grabs it every time. Had my friends try the same on their picky eaters and seem to work every time now. Got this advice from several KZbin channels like Snake Discovery and Green Room Pythons. If they don't grab it, try blasting the head again on all sides, and also be patient. If they still don't grab try again a few days later If still nothing try cleaning the enclosure and/or replacing the substrate Ours seem to take every time, and haven't refused yet. Again this advice comes from other youtubers. Hope it helps anyone who is having issues with feeding their snooty boops.

I agree. -Not eating for 2 weeks is nothing to worry about. Sometimes mine won't eat for 3-4 weeks, depends on how much they ate last time or how old they are, how much they weight. -You want to slowly defrost the rat/mouse bc snakes don't like cooked meat, obviously. Also, if you do it too slowly, it might get infected by bacteria. -YOU DONT LEAVE A DEAD, ROTTING ANIMAL WITH YOUR PET. Omg, I'm glad she didn't use live rat. -Most snakes eat at night time, so probably she should stop dangling the rat in front of it's face while it tries to sleep...

I don’t know who was kidding themselves in that second clip, but that is absolutely not a dragon snake. I know because it’s absolutely a tree viper (most likely a variable bush viper), and actual dragon snakes are next to impossible to keep alive in captivity. I get that they most likely called it a dragon snake because the face looks like a dragon, but it’s a very important distinction to make

Another option for a good starter snake, provided you wear gloves until you're comfortable with the snake and the snake is comfortable with you, and provided you don't live in Illinois (which has a blanket ban on ALL venomous snakes regardless of whether their venom is medically significant or not, and yes this does also mean that Hognosed Snakes are banned there, PLUS a ban on most constrictors), is the False Water Cobra. It's a very active colubrid that resembles a cobra, and while it is venomous its venom is generally considered not medically significant and incapable of causing lasting damage (in most cases it just causes itching and minor swelling, comparable to a wasp sting but with less pain and more of the other symptoms), and it's also rear-fanged so it's difficult for it to envenomate a human to begin with. Still, this is why I recommend wearing gloves until you and the snake are fully comfortable with each other if you get a Falsie - even though the venom itself isn't dangerous (it's actually not much more potent than that of a hognose), repeated bites can potentially result in the development of hypersensitivity to the venom and that can potentially be problematic. They are a little touchier than some other snakes, but not by much. And they're VERY intelligent by snake standards. But the thing that makes them a really good starter snake is how easy they are to feed. They'll eat any fresh meaty food, and they generally don't go on "hunger strikes" like some other snakes will. Mice, feeder fish, chicken, quail, frogs, lizards, smaller snakes, you name it, they'll eat it. The only time they'll refuse to eat is if you keep trying to feed them the same thing over and over, Falsies demand a varied diet. So yeah. False Water Cobras are definitely good starter snakes, provided you do your research and take proper care in handling them. So... maybe not for someone just getting into reptiles and immediately jumping into snakes, but definitely for someone familiar with reptiles already. The falsie water cober is technically a danger noodle but they're a danger noodle that's also a boop noodle and not really that dangerous, so I guess it's actually more accurate to call them a caution ramen.

I feel like that’s similar to keeping a person in a single room or even a closet their entire lives, like, it’s so freaking small! Owning animals can really be as cheap or as expensive as you want it to be, there isn’t a problem with the plastic tub, the problem is that it’s like, less than a square foot of space to spend their entire life in.

@@TheMudskipperKing you can keep the humidity very high in a properly sized tub quite easily, you really just copy their natural environment with substrate, temps, and misting. Anyone with a reptile needs to know that. It can have everything the animal physically needs but that should never be what you aim for when you take in an animal. I was also referring to ppl who take good care of their gecko, of course you can keep them in a drawer but that’s really not what ppl say when they tell you how to set up an enclosure. You can keep cats and dogs in a box and your kids in a closet too but that doesn’t mean it’s what ppl mean when they tell you how to set up a child’s room.
