I mean there’s some dumb people who own animals. They’ll say their not stressing their dog out as it’s having an anxiety attack or the cat hissing is just playing. So it’s completely possible someone other than the owner knows more about an animal. She’s an expert and professional in snakes so it’s highly unlikely in her case. But they may just be well meaning newbies or person who memorized a google search of dangerous snake behavior just to view snakes.

@RadiantSharaShaymin Жыл бұрын
Fears aren't nonsensical, I believe they always have some kind of logical origin. It's entirely fair to be afraid of snakes, or spiders, or anything really. The world in general is a dangerous place. It just helps to allay those fears by learning more about the source :) And it's great that you care to know more!

@THENAFERATU4 жыл бұрын
During college, I'd visit a snake that was a residential pet at a nearby pet-store. I did so because the owner would tell me "that snake likes you so much, she always recognizes you, please visit". I never quite understood why, until she gained more confidence to perk up and want to come up to me - but at the beginning I didn't get why they thought she liked me - at all. Turns out, you've pretty much explained it to me now, her body language was the equivalent of a puppy's. I remember even, rarely ever seeing her flick her tongue, and now I know why. Here's the funniest, that snake was 4 years old, and the owner said, in the future, they wanted to give her to someone whom loved her, closer to her retirement, since it seemed unfair to spend all her life "alone", per say. Without being handled more often, and loved as much as she could. You guessed it, they wanted me to keep her one day, but I promptly told them I lived far-away, and had no money whatsoever to keep the lady.... although, I still think about her. Maybe we will meet again, and maybe I will get to keep her...but I'm jobless and downright homeless because of personal-issues, so...I don't think I'll ever see her again... Lady, her actual name, was a Boa Constrictor. And yes, she was, is, beautiful.

I swear to god I can never tell when my ball python is hungry he’s just SO calm and relaxed and friendly all the time. I’ve had him for a few months and he’s yet to bite me but as soon as food is in his tank there is no hesitation at all that sucker is down the hatch. Not to mention since he was young when I got him, normally ball Pythons don’t like you touching their head but he’s actually used to me kissing his nose at this point and sometime I swear if I hold him up to look at him he’ll reach out and give me a little kiss. After years of wanting a snake I finally got one and he’s the sweetest little boy. Update: I’m glad y’all love my little guy so much. Btw his name is Ghoul. He is a little bit of a scaredy-cat and freezes if you enter the room too fast lol. But for those curious he’s growing up well, had a little bit of a scare with him about a month ago thinking he was sick but everything’s ok. His birthday was this last November and now I’m coming up on a whole year of owning him. I couldn’t be a happier snake momma!

I admire the psychological tricks that you use during your videos. Being a show-and-tell herpetologist requires so much more than just knowledge about the reptiles that you work with. You exhibit a calm nature and a bright peppy attitude, you seem petite which is great for showing children that the snakes that you are handling aren't something they have to be afraid of, you wear clothing that a younger audience can identify with, and not to mention your body language. Fantastic presentation, showing just how beautiful and amazing snakes can be.

Devil's advocate: It's a dangerous side effect of the American education system. Most teachers are passionate and capable and well-read, but the lack of qualified people willing to take the pittance public schools pay means there are WAY too many underqualified teachers out there. And of course, they get super defensive about it (sing along if you know the words: "exCUSE me, *I* am the teacher in this room and YOU'RE the student, you kids think you know everything, stop disrespecting me!"), so they never learn. Eventually, you get students jaded to the point they stop trusting *actual* experts to really know what they're talking about. When that attitude follows them past graduation, the results can be annoying at best and disastrous at worst.

The lesson of "look at the whole picture, not one signal" reminds me of people thinking my dog is aggressive because her ruff is fluffed, even though she's smiling, wagging her tail, and moving like a playful excited doggo. Dogs get their fur standing up when they're very excited, regardless of whether they're happy or unhappy. But people have heard that an aggressive dog's fur stands on end so they get wary even though everything else about her body language is friendly and joyful.

Do you have a video on their body condition in particular? I feel like he’s quite slim...wasn’t expecting that with a bp. I obviously don’t want him fat by any means but I can feel ribs when I do a wee physical exam of him. I’m a vet nurse but VERY little experience with reptiles! Oh and is it normal for them to trash their enclosures like a toddler having a tantrum? Lol, every morning I wake up and he’s tipped his water bowl (actually helps the humidity so meh lol) but he flips his hides, knocks down his branches and is covered in substrate! Normal behaviour otherwise, very content to be handled, eats like a champ, curious and calm!

It is very common for snakes to end up messing up their enclosures just it is more likely with bigger snakes. They don't do it on purpose but instead just do it as they explore at night. You likely didn't see it with your corn because corns don't get big enough to knock stuff over easily. If you want to minimize hides getting knocked over you can try a heavier hide, or add a rock on top of the hides you use now. For everything else, good luck finding a way to hold it in place XD

My brother was "attacked" by our pet water python about ten years ago. She escaped from her enclosure, and ended up thinking his big hand hanging over the side of the bed was a rat. She bit into him 3 times, wrapping around his hand on the 3rd and then decided he tasted like a gross boy so she just let go and went to sleep on his hand. He was surprisingly okay with all of that.
@iryn91765 жыл бұрын
I love that you mention the "rattling of the tail" My boyfriend and I just picked up a male corn (we had just a female corn before getting him a few days ago) and we had him in the temporary container and he did just that, rattling his tail against the plastic, it was a little hilarious because we've never seen a cornsnake do such a thing. We know he was just afraid/defensive so we didn't egg him on but thats something I've never encountered and it definitely caught both our attention because his tail hitting the plastic was pretty loud. Both are perfectly handlable as we got them both from the same store and they handle they're snakes constantly. As soon as we were able to pull him out of the container (We of course let him calm down beforehand) he was perfectly normal again with no problems but it was definitely fascinating to watch a corn mimic a rattlesnake in such a fashion, I definitely never knew they could do something like that with their tail.
